20.01.2022 Reading Recovery: A Failed Investment. Reading Recovery is an early intervention program for students in Year 1 who are having difficulty learning to read. It i...s widely used in Australia, the USA, Canada, England, Ireland, France and Denmark. It is endorsed by many leading educators and teacher professional organisations. Yet numerous studies of Reading Recovery have provided no sound evidence that it has sustained positive effects on childrens reading achievement in the medium or long-term, despite its widespread use and high cost. A large Australian evaluation found that it had a negative impact in the medium term. A recent study in the UK which claimed to find a large long-term advantage of participation in Reading Recovery has since been revealed to have been a selective and incomplete analysis of the data. The publication of misleading data is not an esoteric academic issue. Governments and schools have spent, and continue to spend, many millions on Reading Recovery, bolstered by research findings that purport to show a high level of effectiveness. More importantly, there are large opportunity costs for the children with reading difficulties who do not receive the most effective instruction, with profound impacts on their educational achievement and wellbeing. https://www.cis.org.au/app/uploads/2019/02/pp15.pdf?

09.01.2022 Free App Alert - For a limited time you can download Handwriting Heroes for free through the Apple App store (sorry not available for android devices). This ap...p is suited for younger students or those students who need extra support in learning where to start letters and the direction of correct letter formation. Letters are grouped according to the initial stroke required for correct formation and there are a series of animations and stories that are designed to act as a memory tool for correct formation. A few notes about this app: - It is a US app which means that the letter Z is pronounced "zee". In addition, this app only covers basic print. It does not allow you to change the font to a pre-cursive font. https://itunes.apple.com//app/handwriting-he/id1057029973

08.01.2022 Why is spelling so much harder than reading? When we read, we rely on recognition memory- the word is already in front of us and we either use decoding skills ...to sound it out, or automatically recognise the word (and almost simultaneously link letters to sounds and attach meaning). However, when we spell we use retrieval memory- a much deeper kind of memory. English is a morpho-phonemic language...spelling relies on writing down the sounds in words (using a complex alphabetic code), but also the meaningful parts (morphemes) and word origin (etymology). Watch this video to try it out for yourself!
07.01.2022 #BREAKING: NAPLAN exams will be cancelled this year due to widespread disruption to schools caused by the coronavirus. STORY: https://ab.co/3a4SKff. Each year s...tudents in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are tested on literacy and numeracy. This years exams were scheduled for May, but with high absenteeism, some private schools working remotely and public schools temporarily closing after infections, the test will no longer take place this year. The decision was made by consensus at todays COAG Education Council meeting which includes commonwealth, state and territory ministers. The Ministers reiterated their support for the decision to keep schools open.
