15.01.2022 Clara Serena Clara Serena (1890-1972), contralto, was born on 9 June 1890 at Lobethal, South Australia, and registered as Clara Serena Hulda, daughter of Lutheran parents Hermann Franz Kleinschmidt, farmer, and his wife Ida Wilhelmine Mathilde, née Seiler. Hermann's father Friedrich Wilhelm had migrated from the German free city of Bremen in 1836. When Clara was aged 14, the pastoralist Peter Waite recognized her potential, took her into his family and established the 'Serena... Trust' to provide for her education. She received tuition with Guli Hack at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide. Waite's daughter Elizabeth became her friend and acted as chaperone when Kleinschmidt won a conservatorium scholarship in 1908 to the Royal College of Music, London, where J. H. Blower and Albert Visetti were her teachers. She qualified in 1911 with a diploma with credit, and after further study in Italy and Germany she took the name 'Clara Serena' in 1913. https://digital.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/nodes/view/7615 https://digital.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/nodes/view/7661

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Australian of the Year, Dr James Muecke. With a name like Muecke, and being from South Australia, suggests that there must be some German heritage in there somewhere!

10.01.2022 Queensland Family History Society has just released some new searchable online datasets, including notices from the News Budget - Deutsche Beilage. What is the News Budget - Deutsche Beilage, I hear you ask? The Queenslander News-Budget was a newspaper that provided a weekly compilation of stories about local and foreign events, with an emphasis on material to interest those in rural districts. Commencing about 1906, it included a four-page German language supplement entitle...d Deutsche Beilage that continued until prohibited by the government in 1917. As it was printed in German and the old Fraktur typeface, the material contained in the Beilage is not easy to access for many Australian researchers. The late Les Moreland read and translated the articles in this database, and Noel Bergman computerised the information. These articles, taken from issues between 1908 and 1910, may give information not available elsewhere. Many names are mentioned in the ‘Topic’ field that are not listed under the Surname/Given names fields. To find these entries, use the Keyword Search. If you would like to try out the database, go to https://www.qfhs.org.au/online-access/qnbdb/ but you will need your QFHS login and password to use it. Don’t forget. For successful searching in this database, enter the surname or place that you are interested into the keyword search box!

03.01.2022 An opportunity exists for some financial assistance for NSW projects. Grants of up to $5000 are available and help support the work by local historical societies, community organisations and individuals across New South Wales. Projects should be relevant to understanding the history of New South Wales and its people and places. The main priority areas for the 2020 grant round are migrant history and disaster recovery and conservation of collections due to the New South Wales bushfires.
