13.01.2022 Happy International Day of Older Persons! Today we mark the critical contribution made by older people around the world and acknowledge the work we need to do t...o ensure we all age well. We are particularly excited this year as today marks the first day of the WHO’s International Decade of Healthy ageing. As one of its top priorities WHO has committed to undertaking a global campaign to combat ageism. And that’s where we come in with your help! Join us to end ageism. If you haven’t already done so, go to everyagecounts.org.au to sign our pledge and encourage one more person to do so. Or, why not bring an organisation you’re connected with to the campaign? Maybe a sporting club, cultural or community organisation. Adding your name, or your organisation’s name, to the EveryAGE Counts pledge is a simple but powerful thing you can do right now do to show you believe in a fairer, more equitable Australia: a place where everyone is valued, respected and has the opportunity to participate fully in our society. And don’t forget to send us a photo! See more

08.01.2022 More than 459,000 Australians living with dementia and the almost 1.6 million Australians involved in their care. Although projection methods vary, the number of people with dementia is projected to triple between 2011 and 2050, to reach around 900,000 in Australia and 131.5 million worldwide by 2050. September is Dementia Awareness Month and from 21-27 September 2020 it is Dementia Action Week. AAG are proud to present this special recording of Dr Sarah Cope on her presentat...ion on Dementia and Dementia Care for Dementia Action Week. Sarah was an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Canberra and previous secretary of the ACT AAG Division in 2016-17. Sadly in 2018, she passed away at the age of 44 after experiencing with the illness for just over two years. Sarah was well known for her energy and passion for aged care nursing by all she taught and interacted with. This lecture was provided as an introduction into Dementia and Dementia Care for undergraduate nursing students. It is a small testament to her enthusiasm and skills in the topic. As a sit down online lecture it doesn’t show her singing and dancing which were sometimes a feature of her lectures, to the surprise and delight of many students. Thank you to Sarah’s husband Ian for allowing AAG to present her lecture during Dementia Action Week 2020. Visit https://bit.ly/3kENIej for more information

05.01.2022 AAG today released a statement responding to the Covid-19 spread in Victorian aged care facilities, and a media release entitled: ‘More than ‘hospital’ versus ‘aged care’ in the COVID Victoria blame game’, an excerpt of which follows. ‘Some critical core principles - including the fundamental human rights of the people who are at the heart of it - are at risk of being forgotten in the debate raging in Victoria around the medical care provided to residents of aged care homes, ...according to the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG). Professor Christine Stirling, President of the AAG says the current COVID-19 crisis, characterised by blame shifting and finger pointing among groups claiming to ‘know best’, oversimplifies the issues and fails to acknowledge important, if inconvenient, considerations. Speaking on the day when Victoria’s new cases hit 723, Professor Christine Stirling commended the work of frontline workers, service providers and governments in trying to address the spread of COVID-19 through Victorian residential aged care facilities. However, she said it was vital to understand there were no simple, ‘correct’ solutions.’ To continue reading and for the AAG Statement: Responding to COVID-19 spread in Victorian aged care facilities https://bit.ly/2PalU3v
