24.01.2022 WARNING: CATASTROPHIC FIRE DANGER We urge everyone to be prepared for today’s catastrophic fire danger. The Illawarra and South Coast have been among many suburbs within NSW to be issued with this severe warning. It’s expected to hit close to 40c today. Please ensure your pets have a cool place to relax with plenty of shade and water. There is a serious chance for a lot of pets to experience heat-stress. If you are concerned, we encourage you to contact either our AP ...hospital or GG clinic for further advice. Please stay safe and be vigilant.

18.01.2022 "As a veterinarian, whenever I am not sure about something, one of the first colleagues I turn to are our veterinary nurses. This something can encompass a broad range of topics, and includes the sometimes overwhelming hospital and surgical list, progress (or sometimes deterioration) of our hospital patients, communication with clients, stock issues, sending and receiving external pathology results, how to work the in house pathology machines, and perhaps most importantly, ...the location and name of the item that I am currently looking for. Many describe the role that veterinary nurses play in a clinic as the working nuts and bolts, essential for the daily operation of a functional veterinary practice. They are on the front line dealing with disgruntled and emotional clients, face to face, over the phone, email and social media, often simultaneously. Stock take, ensuring required medications are stocked, diary shuffling and scheduling and keeping the vets up to date with their S8s with a friendly ‘don’t forget’is all in a day’s role for a typical veterinary nurse. They play a crucial role in triaging patients when presented suddenly at the clinic (as well as over the phone), wildlife which happens to fly in to keep the staff on their toes, as well as the daily care and attention required to provide good outcomes for hospitalised and surgical patients. In many cases they are first to follow up patients that have been discharged from hospital or had recent surgery, as well as sympathising with clients who have had their beloved pet recently euthanised. This expression of sympathy is something that owners are very appreciative and grateful for. I’ve only mentioned some of the nuts and bolts, but I feel the role nurses play transcends these daily requirements. They are often the first to ask if anyone (vet, client, manager, rep) would like a cuppa or something sweet, give free advice on the meaning of life (good and bad) and make light of what can be frustrating and stressful situations. Many ideas for social nights out and catch ups, functions and sporting teams are brought to life by veterinary nurses. Public awareness campaigns or charity events such as RSPCA cupcake day, R U OK? and Love your Pet, Love your Vet are championed by our workhorse colleagues. I fondly remember walking into the treatment room whilst being interviewed at a mixed practice for a new graduate position. As I walked through the door the nurse told me a dog was being treated for eclampsia. I arrived at the only table in the room to a white, tremoring, small breed dog. When asked ‘what is wrong with this dog?’; I was quickly able to diagnose the correct condition afflicting the new mother. Not only had I a learnt a new word for the day, but I had also landed my first job as a veterinarian." Dr Adam McCosker - To our nurses
