22.01.2022 Two esteemed guests at our end of year function: Historian Robyn Florance & Member for Gilmour, Fiona Phillips.... GDHS is delighted to enjoy the interest & support of these two women.

20.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday is the story of three orphan sisters who went on to become pioneer European settlers in the Kiama and Gerringong districts - Cece...lia Hindmarsh, Caroline Kendall, and Catherine Chapman. The mother of the girls, Charlotte (nee Robinson), married three times during her short life. Born in England in 1775, Charlotte married Francis Flower at age 16 and had a son, also called Francis, in 1793. Charlotte later travelled to NSW as a governess, arriving in 1807. She married William Rutter, whom she met on the voyage, that same year. William and Charlotte had three daughters, Cecelia Sophia, Caroline Blake and Catherine Newell, born in 1808, 1810 and 1812 respectively (although there is some contention with the dates). In 1812, William Rutter died, and a few years later, in 1817, Charlotte married again, to John O'Meara. However, just five years later, in 1821, Charlotte died at the age of 46, leaving behind her three young daughters, who were sent to live at the Female Orphan School in Parramatta. Cecelia was 13, Caroline 11, and Catherine just 9 years old. Cecelia Sophia Rutter married Michael Hindmarsh in Campbelltown in 1826, whom she met while employed as a housekeeper on the station where Michael was the manager. They lived at 'Alnebank' (although the homestead wasn't built until 1851) on Michael's land that he was granted in 1827, just west of Gerringong. Cecelia and Michael had 14 children over 24 years, including twin daughters who both died in their infancy and were the first to be buried in the private cemetery at 'Alne Bank'. Cecelia died in 1869, aged 62, and is buried in the family's private cemetery. The second sister, Caroline Blake Rutter, was 'apprenticed' by the Orphan School at age 13 as a servant west of Sydney. By the age of 20 she had moved south to live with Cecelia at 'Alne Bank'. It was here that Caroline met Thomas Surfleet Kendall, who owned Barroul Estate (southern Kiama). Thomas had already built 'Happy Villa' on the Barroul Estate, so Caroline had a home to live in straight away. In 1857, Thomas Surfleet Kendall built Barroul House (recently restored as the cafe at Bluehaven Bonaira). Caroline and Thomas had nine children together. Caroline died in 1891, aged 81, and is buried in Kendall's private cemetery. The third sister, Catherine Newell, married twice. Catherine had eight children to her first husband, Robert Cooper. When Robert died in 1848, Thomas Chapman, a family friend of the couple, married the widowed Catherine in 1851. In 1856, Thomas purchased 9 acres of land from his brother-in-law, Thomas Surfleet Kendall, and built Hartwell House in 1857/58 for Catherine. However, Catherine died just two years later, at aged 48, and was buried in Kendall's Cemetery. #throwback #tbt #kiamaremembers #kiamansw #gerringong #localhistory #nswpubliclibraries #kiamalibrary Gerringong Historical Museum

19.01.2022 Have you seen the latest? We're told these are the original colours.

18.01.2022 1st photo is our Butcher shop in Wwerri Beach first opened in the 1950's by Billy Soaper , 143 Renfrew Road . In the early 1950' s Sid Pitt took owership and was well know for his sausages, tripe and brains. We also had a Butcher shop on the corner of Rolands Road and Belinda Street . Our local bakery was opposite the now Mayflower Village and owned and run by The Van Doorns , till the late 60's .

18.01.2022 Our sleeping beauty is starting to come to life. Here are a few glimpses inside the School of Arts taken during today's site visit. Even though work across the site has had to wait a while, our treasure continues to be restored beyond its former glory. Note the 1883 foundations revealed under the seating, the specialist lighting being installed and some of the exhibition furniture in its bubble wrap.... Gerringong - this is going to be a special place with many stories to tell when it is unveiled as the Gerringong Heritage Museum.

18.01.2022 This important heritage building looks to be in safe and sensitive hands

18.01.2022 Thanks to Kiama Library Team & GDHS members for preparing this delightful display in the Library. It tells many stories about the Gerringong School of Arts from 1883 up to its current transformation as the Gerringong Museum. The centrepiece of interest is this wonderful model made by the late Eric Wagstaff & donated to the Museum by his family.... Visit the Library & enjoy the display.

17.01.2022 Thank you Kiama Library for this beaut overview of our little hall's history...it has survived against the odds and always seemed to be loved into the next stage of its life. Getting ready little hall for your re-birth!

17.01.2022 A very big thank you to the Gerringong Lions Club for their donation of $1000 to assist with creating a digital record of Gerringong's history. Mark Westhoff, Secretary of the Lions Club, presents the cheque to Colleen Horner & Dianne Fielding. Wonderful things are happening in the GDHS technology world.

14.01.2022 Meet the GDHS technology team: Dianne Fielding. Colleen Horner & Susan Fielding. This is our "lead group" who are dedicating their time & talent to transferring our collection of interviews & imagery to the interactive digital format.... It is an enormous task which, when completed, will allow a large audience to access everything we have on record once the museum is open.

12.01.2022 Smythesdale Historical Society, Victoria, has a certificate of appreciation from the Municipality of Gerringong for a gentleman by the name of: MAX A HAYTER The certificate is an expression of appreciation for services in WW11... Is anyone able to help us locate this family? Our friends from Victoria would very much like to see the certificate back with the family of Max Hayter.

11.01.2022 Two treasured members - Dawn Miller & Margaret Sharpe - just to say "Thank you - you are much appreciated & loved".

10.01.2022 An interesting story recorded by Clive Emery in 2006: THE GUM NUT BABIES Before the arrival of Miss Grace Watkins at Gerringong Public School in 1926, the assistant teacher was Miss Mabel Pritchard who, being a close friend of May Gibbs, passed on to her pupils stories of the Gum Nut Babies.... May Gibbs made a gift to the school of a series of drawings in colour, depicting Bib & Bub, & Snugglepot & Cuddlepie. The drawings featured the eucalyptus leaves & gum blossoms as have always appeared in her illustrated books. These formed a frieze above the folding glass doors dividing the classrooms. The gift was made in 1925 much to the delight of the pupils. Clive goes on to say: "I believe the frieze was removed when the school was re-painted." Q: Who in Gerringong knows where they are 95 years later? Wouldn't they be wonderful to have in the Museum!

04.01.2022 Circus comes to town . This was late 70's or early 80's . ?? Anyone remember ? It was our last circus . Situated in the surf club and park area today .

04.01.2022 The Gerringong Dairy Co-operative was formed in 1888 and opened the doors of this wonderful building in 1908. The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage lists the building and its railway siding as "historically significant" for its ability to illustrate the development of the dairy industry in the region. It is going to auction on Monday 24th August in Wollongong through the Real Estate group "The Agency".... It is zoned B7 Business Park for office and light industrial uses. Be aware Gerringong residents - this building must be preserved & put to productive community use. It needs the right patron or a new "Co-operative" to ensure its long life in this town. Please share your thoughts on this information.

04.01.2022 John Graham, a Life-Member of GDHS, has given a unique gift to the Museum & the Gerringong community. You are looking at John handing over the autographed envelope which flew in the Southern Cross with Charles Kingsford-Smith. On 11th January 1933, Kingsford-Smith & his team took off from Seven Mile Beach to fly to New Zealand, they were carrying a small batch of philatelic mail. Ten "covers" were carried, each with its own "proving" postmark. This little beauty is one of onl...y two postmarked GERRINGONG, 10th January. It is signed by all three crew and the two passengers. John - thank you for giving this treasure back to Gerringong and Gerroa. To our community: When we have our Museum in operation come & bring your children & grandchildren to see this treasure.
