19.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday In August 1932 residents of Five Dock and Abbotsford were startled by the emergency landing of a DH60 Gypsy Moth in a market garden, south of... Blackwall Point Road (currently Curtin Avenue and nearby). Local pilot James Richard Whitford of 20 Rowley Road had been overflying his house at 2000 feet when the plane developed engine problems. He had made a perfect landing in the garden; which is cultivated by Robert Steed, of Blackwall Point Road, Abbotsford, when the machine struck against a waterway between the vegetable beds, and toppled over on its nose. Whitford, a member of the well-known local family of grocers, went to hospital with cuts and concussion but made a full recovery. A monument in Five Dock Park, adjacent to the Five Dock war memorial, commemorates James Whitford. Training as an RAAF pilot, Pilot Officer Whitford, along with Flying Officer R T Vincent, was killed when their DH60M Gypsy Moth crashed on takeoff at Point Cook, Victoria. The memorial to a well-liked Five Dock local was paid for by subscription and unveiled in 1941. #tbt #nswpubliclibraries #localhistory #FiveDock #Abbotsford City of Canada Bay
