22.01.2022 This peppercorn tree (Schinus molle) was in a bad state as you can see from pictures 2&3. Luckily for the tree the homeowner has taken and implemented ALL of the advice given to him and the tree has bounced back beautifully! The area around the tree was heavily compacted as it was used as a driveway and storage. This limited the trees ability to breathe and gather water/nutrients. The owner actioned all of the following recommendations. 1)Decompact the soil around the trees... drip line or greater (I suggested a pitchfork but it was so compacted he had to use a crowbar!) 2) Deep watering with honey water. He used 1L of honey and 70L of water. (the formula is approximately 1 table spoon of honey per 1 litre of water) 3) Mulch with wood chip mulch ideally 10cm thick to the drip line but ideally further. 4) Additional deep watering after mulch has been applied and after a few weeks again. I want you to know that removal of a declining tree is not the only option. Remedial works can be done to give the tree a second chance and hopefully keep it in our landscape for a long time yet. #gervistreeservices #arborist #arboriculture #remedialtreeworks #treecare

22.01.2022 A beautiful view and great day working with Port Fairy Trees doing a full crown reduction and thinning of the elm. This was done to allow for more light onto the house while keeping this beautiful tree in its natural form. @ Port Fairy, Victoria

21.01.2022 GTS has recently finished planting 37 trees in Camperdown college with another 9 to be planted by the college at a later date . Through a tree risk assessment report 21 trees where designated for removal for either being too much of a risk or already being dead. GTS believes that in the current climate, trees are part of the formula for a better future and we don't want to be responsible for taking more than we give. So for every tree we remove or mark for removal 2 or more... are put back . This for me is one of the most rewarding aspects of tree work at the moment. Better than this is caring for existing trees to make sure they stay in our environment as long as viable These trees where planted to commemorate the year 12's and 6's graduating this year . #planttrees #greenbusiness #treesforafuture

21.01.2022 We don't always have to remove the tree to the ground. This is an example of a dead tree retained for habitat. This tree had died off, and was becoming a potential danger as some of the limbs overhang a walking track. We removed the excess length from the limbs to reduce chances of failure and reduce the sail area to minimise the winds effect on the tree. We then carved a number of habitat hollows and applied some cuts in the tree to accelerate insect and fungal impacts. This... will help the tree become a much more densely populated havan for life in the area. As the tree is in the picture now it should stand for at least 100-200+ years without any incidents of failure and provide a home to a wide range of wildlife. The habitat hollow in the second picture already has signs that someone has taken up residence . #gervistreeservices #habitat #microbat #habitatcreation #arborist #arboriculture #4nature #ecoarb @ Warrnambool, Victoria

21.01.2022 Trees only ever enhance a view I think.

19.01.2022 These are more that just scratchings in wood. This is a new potential home for micro-bats . A single micro-bat can eat 500 mosquitoes in an hour!!! #gervistreeservices #habitat #microbat #habitatcreation

19.01.2022 Glad to see someone else enjoying these trees as well If trees are pruned and cared for properly this little guy and his friends will have a lot more time to enjoy them

18.01.2022 It's a long way to walk up a rope, the views are worth it though . Doing some deadwooding and hazard reduction pruning on this beautiful eucalyptus.

14.01.2022 New habitat hollow created. This hollows dimensions and positioning are carved to attract pardalotes. Let's hope, one happens to catch a glimpse of this and decides to take up residence . #gervistreeservices #arborist #arboriculture #habitat #habitatcreation #pardalote #hollowsarehomes

14.01.2022 What a thumper! This old euc was getting some deadwooding done to reduce risks over the drive and take a bit of weight off it. Was a good day working with @arbatortreeservices

12.01.2022 This is some of my favorite type of work This was some structural pruning to remove deadwood, crossing branches, previously lopped limbs and to lift the skirt up to allow more light onto the lawn without compromising the nice full canopy. Good pruning should be visually subtle.... One of the highest complements an arborist can receive when doing pruning work is "it hardly looks like you've been here." That is as long as the overall objectives have been reached. #gervistreeservices #pruning #arboriculture #warrnambool #treemaintenance @ Warrnambool, Victoria

11.01.2022 It looks like a work site accident, lucky for me it wasn't the case . This was a pocket of kino, a substance produced by eucalypts to fill and block damaged sections of their limbs to prevent and halt any potential pathogens. Trees can't "heal" but they can adapt to their stressors, this is one of those adaptations.... #gervistreeservices #kino #trees

09.01.2022 This row of eucalypts botryoides has previously been topped by another tree company with the aim of getting them away from the power lines. Unfortunately this is a very short term solution as the tree will be back to previous heights within a few of years and as you can see in picture 3 this new growth has a much weaker attachment that if it had have been left as is. A better option is to prune branches/limbs that are leaning towards the lines and have a higher risk of fallin...g over them. We can directionally prune to try and promote growth away from the lines while keeping height in these trees. This is a much longer term solution. It would have been much easier for me and much better for the tree if these hadn't been topped in the past but oh well . #gervistreeservices #arborist #arboriculture #pruning #lineclearance #donttoptrees @ Mailors Flat, Victoria, Australia

07.01.2022 A beautiful history.

06.01.2022 Unfortunately often when we buy trees from a nursery, particularly larger specimens, they've often been in a particular sized pot for far too long and have developed girdling roots due to winding around the walls of the pot. Now as a small tree this doesn't really present too much of a problem, but as the tree grows and develops, these roots can essentially strangle the tree. The layer of tissue just below the bark is called the cambium and is responsible for shuttling water ...and nutrients through the tree. As the roots growing around the trunk and the trunk itself continue to grow and expand they will slowly constrict that flow leading to decline and potentially death. What we have done here is cut the problematic roots to allow for continued growth. There may be short term die back in the canopy to the branches these roots may have been supplying to, but to a much lesser extent than if they were left to be. The best things that could have happened is 1) proper growing conditions in the nursery and 2) formative pruning at the time of planting and proper planting techniques. Some species of trees such as figs can fuse the different layers of cambium and together so this often negates the need for this kind of intervention. Tuarts can't . #gervistreeservices #arborist#arboriculture #rootpruning

05.01.2022 A tree can take 150+ years to form a sufficient natural hollow for our wildlife. We can help this process along

05.01.2022 Pre carved habitat hollows able to be placed in suitable trees. We don't always have trees that are the correct size to carve hollows in, these can be a work around if we still want to be able to provide a quality home for our native animals. Send me a message if you are interested in having one of these installed.... #gervistreeservices #arborist #arboriculture #habitat #habitatcreation #hollowsarehomes

04.01.2022 This Atlantic cedar unfortunately had to be removed as it had been regularly dropping large limbs and didn't really present with many good options to prune back to. It's a shame to see trees of this age go, there is a silver lining though. Fortunately the barrel of this tree was able to be donated to Cancer in Kids Association who make furniture and other items to sell and donate towards helping fund research into childrens cancer. http://cika.org.au/... A replacement tree will also be donated to the owner and one to Tower Hill . Last year Gervis Tree Services was able to directly and indirectly plant 113 trees . #gervistreeservices #arborist#arboriculture #ethicalremovals #treesforafuture

04.01.2022 A bit of pruning over the driveway to let more light in and reduce the risks of major branch failures. Originally the owners where wanting the tops taken out as they where worried about branch failure, but upon explaining why that's usually not a good idea they where more than happy for this type of prune. Happy owners, arborist and trees .... #treework #gervistreeservices #pruning #hazardreduction #treetrimming #arborist #trees @ Kirkstall, Victoria, Australia

03.01.2022 Just have to put the finishing touches on this habitat hollow and will soon be ready to hang . Often we don't have trees suitable for a hollow to be created in them, when that's the case we can try hanging a pre carved home .... This hollow should be perfect for Rosellas and similar birds . #gervistreeservices #arborist #arboriculture #habitat #habitatcreation #hollowsarehomes

01.01.2022 Some fruit tree pruning for aesthetics and to keep a more compact shape into the future .
