Im spending a weekend singing with my chorus, 20 of us having fun and a whole weekend away from our families. ... I feel the guilt at not being with my boys, and also the deep need to do this for myself and fill my own cup. 22.01.2022 My daily walk used to be the last thing I prioritised and the first thing to drop off when I got busy. Everyone else's needs took priority over my own. It's something I see so many women do, fit everyone else's oxygen mask before their own. It stems from a deep seated belief that our needs are not important.... And it has a cost when repeated for decades, most often showing up in an unhealthy work-life balance. Happily, I've turned things around and now my walk is the most important part of my day. I look forward to it, it's my mental health hour, I do it at the BEST time for me instead of cramming it in. And it makes me feel valued, loved, healthy and well. it lifts my mood and I'm a better mother, wife, doctor and therapist for it. So what changed for me? I started to speak more kindly to myself, value my work and uncover the lurking beliefs that fed my behaviour. It's been a long road! Beliefs like, "I'm not good enough" "I'm only of value when I'm helping others" "I'm different and don't belong" "If it's not perfect it's not good" "The buck stops here" This is where the work is that I do with my clients. 20.01.2022 Fear means youre out of your comfort zone and need support. Think about where you could find more support. Not whinging, venting or blaming but real support. ... Support will help you to be all you can be, step in or step out, but make a powerful decision either way. My clients tell me they feel supported and challenged. Just the right amount of both. You have the answers and everything you need inside you. Never doubt that. Therapy is not about making nice, its about having a deep conversation and being supported to look clearly at difficult issues so you can make change for the better. At all points you get to choose. The important thing is to start.

20.01.2022 Post retreat high! It's a thing, the good part is it lasts for weeks and it can guide us towards the change we need. I've been away last weekend in Stanthorpe with my Flourishing Women's Mastermind retreat, and I'm definitely feeling it. What a great preliminary to our five day retreat in October!... 19.01.2022 Would you like to be able to do your job without it costing your peace of mind? Imagine if work was fun. Imagine if you also had a rich life outside work: health, friends, good food, fun. Imagine if you were kinder to yourself. ... I made this journey. It started in Brixton when I was pregnant with my first child. I went to see a therapist. I knew I didn't want the negativity inside my head to be visited upon this small, pure little being who was about to arrive in the world. You see, I was really hard on myself. Externally all was success, a good job as a partner in general practice, well paid, responsibility, a partner, new flat in London, I was an excellent weight, fit, looked good. But inside was more messy! I often felt overwhelmed and connecting with others was difficult. It was hard to feel enjoyment, satisfaction or trust. It was as if I just couldn't relax and see my good qualities and like myself a little. It took time, but I developed self compassion, confidence and courage to make good choices for myself. Work became more on my terms, I felt powerful, relationships deepened and became warmer, and I stopped worrying all the time! You are that powerful too!! 19.01.2022 Do you look after everyone else but not yourself? Your needs always come last, and it sometimes feels like you're grinding yourself into the dust. It's an old pattern you recognise, that probably started in childhood, but you just can't seem to shake it and do what might serve you better. Somewhere you know this is not sustainable and if things don't change soon, some part of you is going to break, your physical health or your mental health.... Who's going to take care of you? I know how this feels, I was looking after my kids, my parents and my patients as a busy GP and therapist. But a point came when I realised I had to put myself back into the equation. Life had to be good for me too, and that wasn't a shameful or guilty thing, it was just true, I was no use to anyone as a burned out, resentful, irritable version of myself. So here are my three tips to start changing this up, Let go of guilt around serving yourself first. You can give so much more when your own cup is full. Schedule time for yourself - a walk, a massage, a coffee with a good friend, even a retreat. Get used to saying NO. Let me know in the comments one thing you can do today to start this change. 18.01.2022 When I was thirty two I spent a year travelling. It wasn't the first time I'd had an extended period of travel and adventure, that started at 14 when my family travelled across Asia and Europe for a year. In Thailand I met and travelled with Pierre, a french lad just out of the army, from Montpellier in the southwest of France. One of my dreams was to live and study in France and, according to Pierre, Montpellier was THE place for foreign students.... So 6 months later, after trekking Annapurna, doing my first meditation retreat at Ko Pan monastery outside Kathmandu, travelling through Turkey and round the Greek islands, visiting Prague, Budapest and Vienna, I turned up in Montpellier to find out for myself. It was like I had arrived in a dream. An ancient walled city, streets made of marble, the oldest University in Europe, a medical school that boasted Rabelais as an ex-student. Amazing food, sunshine and je ne sais quoi, which filled my heart with excitement. I had spent 8 years at University during my twenties, living on lentils, had intense internship and house officer jobs in hospitals, and now was my chance for a little freedom, where I got to design my life. I knew immediately I wanted to live and study in Montpellier. One year and a UK diploma in Anaesthetics later, almost to the day, I drove into Montpellier in a tiny little Austin metro with UK plates, and enrolled at the Universite Paul Valery for 12 months of French language studies. 18.01.2022 I hear so many objections to starting Psychotherapy If youre you a lawyer or barrister close to burnout, feeling unsupported in your work, anxious and overloaded, it can offer a life changing transformation. ... 17.01.2022 One thing many of my clients have in common is not being able to access or befriend their emotions. Even being a little afraid of them. After all emotions are out of control, right? Antonio Damasio has powerfully written about the role of emotions in so called rational thinking. Without emotions there is no rational thinking. ... So this is what I teach them. Feelings are just energy in motion. They tell us whats going on. Anger means my boundary has been crossed Fear means Im unsupported. Envy means something is missing from my life Grief means there is unexpressed love. Finding this compassionate view towards emotions means you can do something about them. Use them powerfully to make change.

17.01.2022 Are you an Olympic worrier? Here are my top 3 tips to manage anxiety in the moment. Dont let it continue to take a huge toll on your physical and mental wellbeing. ... You dont need to suffer in silence. 1. Tap into your breath to calm your nervous system, close your eyes and breathe in counting to four, breathe out counting to four, increase to five, then six. Do this for two minutes. Time your count with the ticking of a clock. 2. Bring your attention to your immediate experience. What can you see, feel, hear, smell? Take one minute. 3. Move your body, go for a walk, stretch, get a drink of water. Youll find more practices in the comments to develop more anxiety tolerance and improve your wellbeing.

Take a moment, close your eyes and breathe. Become present to yourself and notice your inner state. Now bring to mind freshly mown lawns, the smell of coffee in the morning, birdsong in a pristine forest, the rolling of the ocean. What do you notice in your experience as you do this? 16.01.2022 The biggest change that happened for me when I made my Gestalt journey is that I started to listen to myself and respect myself more. I stopped putting up with things in my life that werent in my best interests. I changed jobs!... Yes, I was here to serve others but it also had to be good for me. I made myself part of the equation and took positive action which has made the last ten years of my life so much more rewarding and fun. Its an ongoing process and its incremental. I chose a job close to home I chose to ride my bike to work I chose to pursue another career pathway part time I chose to go on a yoga retreat in Bali I chose to offer a Gestalt retreat in Bali I chose to make my part time fun job my full time fun job and say goodbye to an identity I had worked so hard for. The difference was that I chose from a deep connection to myself, knowing what I loved and wanted. 15.01.2022 Are you wearing black all the time? Check your wardrobe and see how much colour is daring to appear. Something can happen to women at a certain age, where we can start to make ourselves disappear. It happened to me and I fought back.... My turnaround moment was when I fully accepted that, despite all my outward success - I was a GP, a Psychotherapist, I was financially successful and had a lovely family - my yoga teacher had a MUCH more exciting life than I did. From that moment forward I took deliberate action to create a life that worked for me as well as everyone around me. Every 'yes' I said to myself was a 'no' to someone else, but what I discovered is that this started a cascade of change in every relationship and every situation in my life, and most of them changed for the better! I'd love to bring you on that journey if you want to start living in technicolor and make your forties and fifties the BEST decades of your life. Where you claim your mastery and enjoy the abundance which flows from that. Now I take responsibility for my own happiness and make choices which include others AND me. I travel to Bali twice a year, work a four day week, work from home, have no boss but myself, and I look after myself. After all, I'm the goose that lays the golden eggs. 14.01.2022 Three tips for women who do it all. Do you work harder than everyone else, at work and at home? It can leave you feeling like you're the only one who shoulders the weight of responsibility, and that can be a lonely place.... If you practice getting in touch with your needs and expressing them before they become a command, you're more likely to achieve your desired outcome. I have three tips for you to begin a change cycle which can create support, spaciousness and ease. 1. Schedule time to look after yourself, because no-one else is going to do it for you. Start small, once a week schedule something that lights YOU up - walk along the river, lunch with a friend, massage, beach time, listen to music, etc. You know best what lights you up. 2. Let yourself imagine how you would like to be supported, do this in FANTASY first, see how it feels. Colour it in, exactly who is doing exactly what? 3. Practise asking those around you for the support you would like. Start small if this fills you with dread. Start where it feels most likely to be successful. 11.01.2022 Is your work life balance out of whack? Mine was.... I knew because I had #insomnia, I was #secondguessing myself, and life felt #flat. Even as a self employed entrepreneur this can happen, I was obsessed with my business and how to get my message across to the right people because I am passionate about my work. So I did something about it. Here are the steps I took so you can do it too. It takes five minutes of #deliberateaction to make small changes that could save your marriage, wellbeing and career. If you don't take #responsibility for it, no one will. 1. Consider what you love to do, what brings YOU joy, happiness and calm (mine was singing) and calculate how much of this you are actually doing (in my case, none) each week. 2. Explore the avenues for you to do this special thing more each week, dedicate one evening a week or a weekend a month, and actually explore HOW you can incorporate it into your life. (I explored all the choirs in Brisbane and joined one) 3. Commit to doing this joy inducing thing for your own benefit, for love of that small precious part of you that deserves to live a good life, be happy and be more than a good worker, a professional and a perfect Mum. 4. Discover that when you prioritise doing this thing, you feel so much better, everyone around you benefits, and contrary to what you believed, nobody else suffers! 02.01.2022 #truthbomb To heal it you have to feel it. The way out of suffering is through it. Not avoiding it. ... I used to think this was all a bit miserable till I realised (quite literally) that in the other side, Its beautiful!! So if youre in pain, suffering, find a good therapist, start exercising and meditating and support yourself to go through it. See you on the other side!!
