23.01.2022 No good has ever come from feeling guilty, neither intelligence, policy, nor compassion. The guilty do not pay attention to the object but only to themselves, ...and not even to their own interests, which might make sense, but to their anxieties. - Paul Goodman Healthy guilt is when I am not doing what is due the situation. Unhealthy guilt is the resentment that comes with I should do or be a certain way - when I really don’t want to. Guilt comes from the German word gelt - which means money. Guilt is the experience of owing. If authentic, then guilt is a cue to do what’s due the situation. If not authentic, but rather an introject (should) then I will no doubt be resentful if I satisfy the Should. #bobandritaresnick #acoupleofindividuals #gestalt #gestalttherapy
22.01.2022 So this is me the nearly graduated psychotherapist! I’ve been at the Connect Ground Clinic in Carlton Melbourne for nearly 2 years now, & recommend anyone looki...ng for mental health support to please give a lil tap on the link below as it’s one of the only places providing pay what you can / free therapy with no cap on sessions. I feel incredibly passionate about how human and connected Gestalt therapy is, and my 4 years of training here has without doubt been the most supportive and transformative learning experience I’ve ever had. If anyone is curious about Gestalt psychotherapy or the community clinic just write me, any little support shared onto others I feel is pretty amazing these days. Also HUGE thanks to everyone at GTA and Connect Ground so far, classmates and faculty have been like family away from home >>Connect Ground Clinic: https://www.connectground.com.au/

17.01.2022 This is Fritz Perls’ well known Gestalt Prayer. When we reference it, we need to provide a context for it, which is often lost when the idiom circulates without... Perls’ background and thinking. Bob here, in my chapter in Psychopathology of Awareness, 2020, I provide some background for the Gestalt Prayer: Fritz Perls was a dramatic iconoclast. He loved shocking people and exploding what he saw as narrow and restrictive thinking. This attitude also functioned to support others to come further out with their views, frequently paling in comparison to Fritz’s ideas. For decades now, I have said that Fritz was a mischievous dialectician, often going for the polarity of shocking people with his pronouncements such as the well-known The Gestalt Prayer. The Gestalt Prayer requires Fritz’s ground or context to grasp his true meaning. Fritz’s provocative pronouncements generated lively examination and discussion; some of them still do. The full Gestalt Prayer is as follows: I do my thing, and you do your thing. I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful. If not, it can’t be helped. (Perls, 1969/1988). Coming out of the post-war 1950s U.S. conformist of how people should be, should want, should buy, the Gestalt Prayer is a metaphor for how there is room for everyone to be who they are. Trying to fit in by being something other than you are and mirroring what the other person wants or the cultural imperative is fundamentally flawed - and doomed. Here is my translation based on Fritz’s (typically unshared) ground at the time: I do my thing. = I am authentically who I am. And you do your thing. = You are authentically who you are. I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. = Neither of us has to be who the other wants us to be. And if by chance we meet, that’s beautiful. = When both of us are authentically who we are regarding our core needs and being open to compromise and collaboration on everything else, and find enough overlap, then we are genuinely compatible and can enjoy ourselves and each other without inauthentic posturing, which is destined to rupture and explode or collapse into implosion. If not, it can’t be helped. = And realistically, there will always be some friction, and some hurt, in relationships. It is impossible to have an ongoing and close relationship with anyone without some difficulties. Life is not a fairy tale. #bobandritaresnick #acoupleofindividuals #gestalt #gestalttherapy

15.01.2022 A message from gestalt student Eden Brown: A number of us who are gestalt therapists and practitioners are looking to bring together a reflective practice group... to foreground issues around gender, and particularly transgender, non-binary and gender fluid identities. We would like the group to be open to people of all gender identities - including cis gender. We envisage the group meeting monthly via zoom for an initial 6 month period. We might use it as a place to: > explore our experience of gender and being received as gendered beings. > engage with therapeutic and supervisory issues related to gender (we are clear this is not formal supervision) > explore intersections of gender with race, culture, sexuality and other identity variables. > give a space to reflect on the support that is available for transgendered and gender non-binary clients within the gestalt and wider therapeutic communities. > act as a forum to develop writing on these themes, as the need and opportunity arises. > we are open to other needs as they may arise. If you would be interested in participating in this group please contact Eden Brown ([email protected]) Warm Regards Eden, Kamila, John John Gillespie (pronouns he/him/his) Chief Executive New Gestalt Voices Newgestaltvoices.org 07791 282 812

10.01.2022 On Gestalt therapy and loss, we turn to Arnold Beisser, Gestalt therapist, student of Fritz Perls, and author of Why do I need wings? A Gestalt Therapist Regard...s His Life as a Paralyzed Person (original title: Flying Without Wings: Personal Reflections on Loss, Disability and Healing, 1990.) At twenty-five, Beisser was a recent medical school graduate and a nationally ranked tennis player. Overnight, he became seriously ill with polio and was almost completely paralyzed. In his biography, Beisser describes how he tries to cope with this deep turning point. Beisser introduced the phrase paradoxical theory of change to Gestalt Therapy, and it has become one of the most important core statements: change happens when we become what we are, not when we try to become something we are not. This has always been implicit to the method, and we have Beisser to thank for making it explicit. #bobandritaresnick #acoupleofindividuals #gestalt #gestalttherapy

08.01.2022 Today I took down our invitation to participate in a conversation about the ongoing disadvantage of many indigenous Australians & the ongoing legacy of displacement & intergenerational trauma caused by colonialism. The conversation yesterday was lead by Aunty Judy Atkinson, and she told stories and taught us about her model of care for working with indigenous peoples...and simultaneously, she taught us traditional ways of thinking about care and respect - a gift from her to u...s. Judy was clear, wise, generous & courageous... I never want to underestimate what it takes for an indigenous person to address a group of non-indigenous Australians. Thanks, Judy. So, today I took the invite down, because of the degree of trolling that it received over the past few days. I took it down because I didn’t want to provide a platform for hatred. I’m writing this because I wanted this to be transparent... The narrow Biden / Harris win feels like good news, but it has also revealed the depth of the divide in the US, and even if all Republicans aren’t racist, they certainly didn’t let the overt racism of Trump change their vote. But Trump and racism aren’t USA phenomena alone... we are not that different to them & as Aunty Judy says we share the same history. I don’t want to support racism in Australia by providing a stage for it, but I also don’t want to pretend it doesn’t exist. I’m committed to continuing to try to understand the systems of thought and action that cement my privilege & to become less & less blind to my embeddedness in the global story of colonialism and racism. A big thanks to those who came and participated yesterday. Tony Jackson / Gestalt Centre https://www.msnbc.com//blaming-trump-is-too-easy-this-is-u
08.01.2022 Therapeutically, dialogue allows for each person’s characterological organization to unfold. It is here, in dialogue, that we are able to experience a person’s... humanity and beauty as well as their interruptions to contact and withdrawal - and the crucial movement in between. Balance (and self-regulation) requires movement. Experiencing this is what we refer to as connection. #bobandritaresnick #acoupleofindividuals #gestalt #gestalttherapy
