25.01.2022 Fabulous work being done on the track to support the villages that have lost their income source due to the Covid Pandemic. We are working hard to continue the journey with our 2020 clients. #takethefirststep #getyourtrekon
24.01.2022 Love nature? Stunning scenery? Great company? Some pics from our Aussie Camino Pilgrimage group to whet your appetite. The group is travelling really well, having collectively decided to leave the soft sands (and smelly kelp!) of the beach for tracks more inland, they spent last night in Port Macdonnell.... They've now left the stark beauty of the southern coast and are travelling north from Port Macdonnell to Mount Gambier, via Mount Schank. #aussiecamino #pilgrimage2021 #reflection #nature #stopandbreathe #getyourtrekon
24.01.2022 We are really looking forward to getting back out on the hills.
24.01.2022 We were fortunate to meet Samara Fernandez-Brown in 2017 when she participated in our Reconciliation SA Kokoda Trek. It's not overstating to say she had a huge impact on Sue, and how she now views the world. Following our trek, Samara returned from Adelaide to her home in Yuendumu. The clarity she achieved on the track helped her realise she was not living her true life and wanted to give more back to her family and community. This week, Samara was named Naidoc SA Young Person of the Year. So deserved, and so proud of you. #standtogether #kokoda #ReconciliationSA

24.01.2022 A fantastic day trekking Broken Nose via Bartle Frere Trail on Saturday. Eleven intrepid souls headed south from Cairns in the wee small hours to start walking at 6.30am. This is a pretty challenging trek, but the views from the top are stunning. Totally recommended. Stay tuned for more day and overnight treks - wed love to have you join us! #takethefirststep #getyourtrekon

23.01.2022 Joining my first group training walk was scary.. but it paid off. Jodie Ross, one of our fabulous GT family members, first trekked with us on the Kokoda track back in 2009. Jodie was really unsure of herself but found that the Group training walks were a benefit to her. Read more about Jodie on our website https://getawaytrekking.com.au/my-journey-jodie-ross/

21.01.2022 Our turn to help our Kokoda families! Getaway Trekking and Adventure School Treks are proud to support the KTOA "Its our turn to help" campaign. The COVID travel lockdown has hit Kokoda Track communities hard. They have lost the income they rely on from trekking groups - porter wages, campsite fees, food and direct sales to trekkers - and travel restrictions are likely to be for as long as a year.... https://www.gofundme.com/f/it039s-our-turn-to-help-our-koko This campaign is supported by member companies of the Kokoda Tour Operators Association (KTOA) who are reaching out to all past and present trekkers. Your donation can help them through this tough bit. Again all money raised will go directly to KTOA who will distribute it to the families and communities along the Kokoda Track and Northern Beaches.

19.01.2022 Our clients are very important to us and over the years we have been very fortunate to have taken many people across the track. Our client flashback today goes back to 2010! Do you recognise anyone?
17.01.2022 The good news about our travel restrictions is the time weve had to look to our own backyards for our escape into nature. For a lot of us, spending as much time indoors as we have during this pandemic, bushwalking is new and we need to ensure we are as prepared as we can be. As the weather gets warmer and more restrictions continue to lift in Queensland, this brings with it a timely reminder to be wary of "just what is out there".... Our senior trek leader, Wayne, was recently asked about this.
17.01.2022 Choose your boots carefully, as if they will become your new best friends. As if they will take you to places you've never dreamed of. As if your trekking happiness depends on them. Because it does. #lovemyboots #choosewisely #invest #yourjourneystartshere #takethefirststep #getyourtrekon

12.01.2022 This day in history-Battle of Isurava on the Kokoda Track begins. On 26 August the Japanese clashed with the 39ths forward outposts at Isurava heralding that ...their next attack was developing. The same day the first two companies of the 2/14th Battalion arrived to relieve the 39ths exhausted young soldiers, the average age of whom was 18. The next afternoon the 39ths left flank was heavily attacked and while the Japanese were able to penetrate one of the company positions, they were beaten off by two quick counter-attacks. Fighting swirled all around the forward arc of the position throughout 28 August as the Japanese sought a weakness in the Australian defences to exploit. 07.01.2022 When out walking, your feet are the most important part of your body - unhappy feet mean an unhappy mind. You need to take care of your feet, and that means being proactive with foot care, and particularly blister prevention. There are many theories out there regarding blisters and how to prevent them. Our Senior Trek Leader, Wayne, has a theory that we are sharing with you today... Heat and moisture create friction, which create hot spots, resulting in blisters. Remove the ...heat and /or the moisture, and you have a lower chance of blisters. So, one pair of thin socks, loose boots and keep your feet dry. Talcum powder for your feet is great, the best has an antifungal function, for example Curash, a great investment at around $6. So make sure that when you are out walking you "listen to your feet". As soon as you feel an uncomfortable spot, stop and remove your boots/shoes. Tape or cover the area straight away to prevent further damage. Happy Trekking! #takethefirststep #getyourtrekon #happyfeet #trainingisfun #GTCairns #GTMelbourne #trek2021 #trektips #noblisters
