13.01.2022 STOP Imagine feeling sick for a few weeks, then ending up being rushed hospital and finding out if you’d left it one day longer - you may have died!!! This sounds made up, but it’s the reality for one of my clients.... Why? Because she didn’t look after her health. She was overweight, she put everyone and everything else before herself and her health. She was always busy so she ate take away dinners and snack foods on the run. She didn’t feel great and was constantly tried, but she just ignored it, I’m to busy to cook/exercise/rest, and she did it for that long that she ended up passing out at work and getting rushed to hospital. When she woke up, she was told she had had a stroke, and her blood pressure and cholesterol were through the roof! 04.01.2022 STOP IMPORTANT!!!! Are your 2020 goals based solely on what you see on the scales??? Listen if you are basing your progress 100% on the number on the scales you are setting yourself up for a rollercoaster ride... I’m not saying don’t use it at all, it can be a great tool to track your results if you have a healthy relationship with it BUT..... The number on the scale is not the be all and end all of your progress If your weight stays the same and you have to take your belt in a notch, you are making progress If your weight goes up but your pants size goes down you are making progress If your weight stays the same but your measurements go down you are making progress If your weight goes up but you can see a difference in before and after pictures, you are making progress The scale is just one tool in many we can use to track your progress Ultimately we are in this to look and feel better so measurements, clothes size, and before and after photos will tell a much better story than the scales alone. A recent study of 32,000 Americans by the think tank Rand found that, on average, Americans have more than 4.5 hours per day of leisure time, the vast majority of which is spent sitting in front of screens. This finding was consistent across income, age, gender, and ethnicity. So even if you insist that you’re too busy to exercise because you work... some kind of important job, or you have kids and a family. You really ought to consider reframing exercise as an essential part of that important job and family life. Research shows that regular exercise increases creative thinking and problem-solving, improves mood and emotional control, and enhances focus and energy. There is no line of work or parent out there that wouldn’t benefit from those attributes. Americans spent 264.6 billion dollars on physical activity in 2018!!! So in a time when we have all the fanciest technology why is the obesity epidemic and preventable death rates growing around the world? Despite all of this technology and fancy equipment most of us are failing to meet the global standard of 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity (e.g., fast-paced walking, gardening) or 75 minutes per week of intense physical activity (e.g., running, strength training)? The best fitness tracker is not some fancy technology, it’s a training partner or community that help you make positive choices for your health Your health shouldn’t be complicated but simple doesn’t mean easy It’s time to go back to basics. For nutrition, Michael Pollan famously offered the advice: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. For fitness, I’d like to add: move your body often, sometimes hard, every bit counts.
