24.01.2022 Critical to building your authority on LinkedIn is having a personal profile that not only positions you powerfully as expert in your field but makes your more likeable and relatable someone your people would enjoy working with. I can’t believe how many people don’t get it right and in many instances these are people responsible for bringing in new business or growing their consultancies. #personalbranding #thoughtleadership #businessowners https://parkerpublicrelations.com.au//how-to-nail-your-pe/
23.01.2022 I’m often asked by people either pivoting their businesses, changing their area of specialisation or embarking on a new area of study, if they should delay their thought leadership ambitions. Absolutely do not put out original content or attempt to provide expert advice or learned commentary until such time that you have accumulated deep experience, knowledge and expertise in their new field. You run the risk of severe embarrassment or public ridicule if you get things wrong.... However, there is nothing to stop you from building your visibility and credibility in a more passive way: - Develop your personal brand on social media. - Connect with people critical to your future plans. - Ensure your connections include acknowledged experts in your industry or field. - Comment on what they say on social media but do so intelligently. Engaging vicariously through these leading experts will stand you in good stead until you are ready to engage as a fully-fledged thought leader. Interested in learning more? 21.01.2022 As a would-be thought leader and authority, is ‘LIKING’ on social media sufficient or should I be looking to up the action? This is question I’m often asked so here’s my response:. By LIKING (even SHARING) an article or post will certainly help take it to a much broader audience which is a great thing to do for a colleague or business associate and they will doubtless be grateful to you for this wonderful gesture. However if you are looking to boost your personal brand or p...osition yourself as an authority, this is not nearly enough. It is absolutely essential that where possible you always COMMENT and that what you say further strengthens your position as the expert in your niche or subject area. And I do say ‘where possible’ because often this is not the case. For example because my niche is thought leadership and communications, I always try link my comments back to my expertise in some way. Another thing I attempt to do when commenting is provide added value and where possible, take the conversation further. I do this regardless of whether I am commenting on other people’s articles or posts or simply responding to comments people have left on my posts. It is also worth keeping in mind that posts on LinkedIn are sorted based on what the algorithm thinks is most relevant so by adding valuable, thought-provoking commentary can help position the post at the top of the list. So next time you’re tempted to just LIKE, consider instead if COMMENTING would be a more appropriate and effective approach!
20.01.2022 In this excellent interview, global economist and renowned thought leader, Noreena Hertz, argues that loneliness is the lens through which we can understand the seismic political and societal changes that have occurred in recent years, as well as the profound sense of disconnection so many feel from each other and the state. She talks about what has caused this epidemic of loneliness, how the coronavirus pandemic is worsening the situation and more importantly, what can be done to reconnect society. https://www.abc.net.au//what-happens-when-a-lonel/12645486 #thoughtleader
19.01.2022 The key characteristics of a stand-out thought leader: they understand and more than likely have lived-experience of the problems facing their industry, they have sought the solutions and more importantly they have gone on to share those solutions with their sector. One such person is fifth generation Cooma sheep farmer, Charles Massy. When drought almost sent him broke he converted to regenerative agriculture to heal his land. As he watched his land recover, he went back t...o university in his 50s to do a PhD in human ecology. Part of his thesis included interviewing 80 of Australia’s top regenerative farmers. These stories have been included in his book, Call of the Reed Warbler: A New Agriculture A New Earth. Charles is now turbocharging the regenerative farming movement via talks and seminars and is turning what was once viewed as a fringe insurgent group into a rapidly growing mainstream movement. Watch this wonderful segment about Charles on Australian Story. https://lnkd.in/ggwuDie
19.01.2022 A big thank you to all the wonderful business owners and professionals who attended our 101 of Thought Leadership webinar late last week. Webinar attendees were provided with insights into thought leadership and the five steps critical to kick-starting their thought leadership journeys. I appreciate some of the fabulous questions asked during the session and will endeavor to answer many of these online over the next few weeks. #thoughtleadership #authority
16.01.2022 Despite the continued shedding of jobs and closure of media outlets (exacerbated by COVID-19), what the media wants and how they choose to engage with businesses and publicists, remains much the same. Journalists still want well-written stories, with a strong news angle, and that are of value to their audiences. They also want to be pitched to via email and continue to regard the media release as the most trusted vehicle for delivering stories. Get this right and you will not only lighten their loads but you will increase your odds of securing media more often.

11.01.2022 Parker Public Relations has played a major role in helping leading environmental group, Keep Victoria Beautiful (KVB), deliver its prestigious Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards in what has been an extremely challenging year. Not only did we provide KVB with clarity and direction around what exactly it was delivering but we dramatically ramped up the number and geographic spread of entries. Rather than a concentration of entries from a handful of areas, entries have ...come from across the entire state. In addition Parker Public Relations dramatically increased the amount of publicity on previous years, securing coverage in local and regional media across the length and breadth of the state. In existence since 1983, the Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards have gradually moved beyond simply rewarding towns for their tidiness. Today they recognise and celebrate grassroots initiatives and positive actions taken by individuals, community groups, educational institutions, businesses and councils in rural and regional Victoria. These include programs and projects that change behaviours, protect the environment, reduce waste, preserve our heritage, increase social wellbeing, celebrate Indigenous culture and encourage strong leadership, especially among our youth. Ultimately the awards celebrate all those actions that improve, empower and build resilience in local communities. For many struggling during COVID-19, entering the Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards acted as a powerful antidote to the pandemic, providing rural and regional communities with a sense of purpose and something to strive towards. A big thanks to Parker Public Relations team member, Virginia Mosk, for going above and beyond during the campaign. This is what Keep Victoria Beautiful CEO, Sabina Wills, had to say about Parker Public Relations’ involvement in the awards: As a small not for profit we have big ideas but a lack of people/resources/skills to deliver. Using Wendy and her team to help us was a fantastic decision. It helped us clarify what we’re doing and delivering. Wendy is calm with a steely determined spine that really helped build our reach and impact.
11.01.2022 When it comes to connections, does quantity trump quality on social media? This is one of the questions that was put to me during my thought leadership webinar last week so I figured it was well worth sharing. Should you aim at having thousands of connections or simply focus on fewer quality connections?... If the focus of your thought leadership is to drive business opportunities and sales, then it is usually about the quantity of connections. That said: ensure that those you connect with are in fact your ideal audience or the people who may influence your ideal audience. However, if you are using your thought leadership to influence or address a specific group of people then of course, quality trumps. By focussing on fewer quality connections allows you to interact at a much deeper level and talk about things the general public might not understand, let alone have interest in. However, for the vast majority, adopting a happy middle ground is probably the best approach to building your connections.

06.01.2022 I’m often asked by business owners, consultants and C-suite executives - particularly those responsible for growing their consultancies or practices why they should bother with personal branding? Isn’t it all a bit insincere, inauthentic and somewhat shallow? No, no and no again! It quickly positions you as an authority in your industry or field and builds your credibility with your customer base. Let’s face it when it comes to choosing who to do business with, clients ar...e more likely to choose recognised experts who are often out there dispensing their deep knowledge and useful insights. Bottom line, they choose people who they can trust and who they believe will do the best possible job for them. The other big advantage of having a strong personal brand is its ability to humanise you and make you more likeable and relatable. It gives you a forum to tell your story, explain what makes you tick and why people like working with you. And something most people forget effective personal branding ensures you get discovered more readily online. It brings customers to your door! 05.01.2022 The key characteristics of a truly effective thought leader: They understand the problems facing their industries and the people or businesses they represent and more importantly they seek to find the answers to those problems. One such person is Lord Mayor for the City of Melbourne, Sally Capp, who has been working with Premier Daniel Andrews to deliver a Capital City Recovery Plan to kick-start the Melbourne economy, support local businesses and keep locals in jobs. Sally ...will be leading the charge to help reinvigorate businesses in the CBD and lure people back to the heart of Melbourne post stage four lock-down. Among the many initiatives designed to inject life into the city centre will be to temporarily transform footpaths and lane-ways into dining areas, an initiative modelled on New York City’s Open Restaurant initiative which helped many restaurants stay afloat during COVID-19 restrictions. #thoughtleadership #optimism https://www.theage.com.au//restaurants-to-reclaim-the-stre
04.01.2022 Defining your expert niche or ‘zone of genius’ is easily the biggest challenge facing CEOs, business owners, entrepreneurs and pretty much anyone looking to build their authority or thought leadership. While most of you will have a pretty good idea of what your niche should be, given that it is usually dictated by the business or field you are in, here are a few prompts for those of you who don’t quite have a handle on what it should be. (Defining your niche will be key discu...ssion point during Week 1 of the Build Your Authority in Six Weeks challenge. The challenge kicks off on Thurs 4 February and runs until 11 March 2021.) https://parkerpublicrelations.com.au//top-tips-for-gettin/ See more
03.01.2022 The key characteristics of truly effective thought leaders: in the main they are people who have earned their stripes in their field or risen to the tops of their careers. They understand the problems facing their industries and more often than not, have the answers to those problems or are prepared to seek out those answers. One such person is Greg Mullins, former Fire and Rescue NSW commissioner and co-founder of the Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ECLA). Following ...the intensity of last summer’s bushfire season, Greg recognised the need for a fundamental shift in the way we tackle the new breed of bushfires which have grown in scale and intensity. With input from former fire and emergency chiefs, climate scientists and other members of the community, he has authored 'Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan'. Check out this excellent interview from last night's The Drum where he talks to key recommendations from the report.https://iview.abc.net.au/show/drum
