21.01.2022 WELCOME TO MAKURU As temperatures plummet and the winter storms arrive, the Noongar season of Makuru begins the coldest, wettest time of year in t...he south west of the state. Traditionally, this was a time Indigenous communities moved back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing cold weather, rains and occasional snowfall on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges. Makuru is represented by the colour dark blue as it symbolises rain and cold weather. Look out for the blues and purples of the blueberry lily (dianella revolta) and the purple flags (patersonia occidentalis) during this season. As the waterways and catchments started to fill, movement through the country became easier and food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lakes to the land, in particular grazing animals like 'yongar' (kangaroos). As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, yongar not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks used to keep warm as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears. Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season and if you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'wardongs' (ravens) flying together. Keen observers will notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' noises that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of 'mali' (black swans) as they prepare to nest and breed. As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba. The Nyoongar calendar has six seasons, each representing the changes we see in the environment. Learn more about the six seasons on the Bureau of Meteorology's website: https://bit.ly/2rP5zbx Bureau of Meteorology. Edith Cowan University (ECU).

18.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a long and proud, but often little known history of contributing to Australia’s military efforts. On ANZAC Da...y, we remember this long history: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have fought for Australia in every war since Federation in 1901. Best current estimates via Australian War Memorial are that about 1,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples fought in the First World War, however, the real number could be higher. In 1944 nearly every Torres Strait Islander man was a member of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalionin proportion to population, no community in Australia contributed more to Australia’s effort in World War II than the people of the Torres Strait Islands. Despite rules against their enlistment, over 3,000-4,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women are known to have enlisted in World War II. Tens of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were killed in the Frontier Wars with recent estimates indicating 60,000 deaths in Queensland alone. http://bit.ly/FrontierWarsExplainer Take the time to learn more via - Our Mob Served: https://ourmobserved.anu.edu.au/ Australian War Memorial: http://bit.ly/AWMIndigenousDefenceService Lest We Forget. #Truthtelling #Reconciliation #ANZACDay

17.01.2022 Some of the activities we have been up to.

16.01.2022 Spending special time with Marissa from Bindi Bindi Dreaming today as she joined the children in some cooking activities where Indigenous native herbs and spices featured in the recipes. The children made a cream cheese dip and an avocado dip with herbs from our bush, then they made fruit salad which featured some delicious lemon myrtle and strawberry gum. As it was Pancake Tuesday, the children made pancakes and to the mix added Wattle Seed which gives a lovely chocolatey f...lavour that the kids loved. The children mixed and beat, sliced and cut, poured and turned - THEN THEY ATE! Thanks so very much to Marissa for sharing your culture and your knowledge again with us, for providing such lovely, tasty and healthy food and for singing, dancing and reading to us as well. Please come back soon. See more

09.01.2022 WE WISH TO ADVISE: As our main priority is to provide high quality care for your children, our FAMILY OPEN DAY WEDNESDAY 25th IS CANCELLED

09.01.2022 Following on with the children's interest in PURPLE CAULIFLOWER, we collected a range of delicious and fresh in season vegetables and had a lovely time with the children, inspecting, cutting and tasting. There was so much interest as children lifted pieces and inspected them with great interest. They noted shape variations, labelled colours and even managed to name some of the vegetables that were familiar to them.... Children were eager to tell us about things they enjoyed and those they didn't like very much. The language used was full with descriptive words and meanings. There was also a lot of sharing of culture as children and staff shared their experiences and childhood memories of different vegetables from their culture/ kitchen.

02.01.2022 KIDS CORNER CHILD CARE CENTRE 190 BEELIAR DRIVE, MUNSTER WA 6166 ART FOR OUR ELDERLY We have been talking to the children a little about the current virus situation as and when they bring it up, or if they are showing signs of being distressed or upset.... One thing we have been talking about a lot is GRANDPARENTS. One of our parents works with aged care, we have asked her if she would deliver some beautiful BUTTERFLY PRINTS to them to cheer them up at this difficult time. The children were very enthusiastic about doing some artwork and got really into producing some stunning work. We dribble on the colours, then gently fold over the paper and squish it gently to make a butterfly They talked a lot throughout, about how happy the grandma's, grandads and nonnas would be to have a nice picture. "It will make them all smile when they look at them" "It will make their rooms nice and coloured" "My picture will make them happy" "My picture has pink on because I like pink and its nice" REFLECTION This activity bought me to tears. The levels the children went to at their ages, to make something beautiful that they could share with their community is amazing. They wanted to bring love, smiles and happiness to those which may be feeling sad or frightened. And they now that colour brings that. I am so proud of the children. See more

01.01.2022 Feeling proud: I just want to take this moment to commend you Karen on your progressive rostering system though. My children have been through 2 other kindies before yours and not one of those places rostered wellness days. Which as a mother of 3 is so important when so many children rely on you to be there for them on so many levels. My children have shown so much growth while in your care and that is what I feel you all do...you care for our children rather then just look after our children. There’s a massive difference and I think it’s hard to spot sometimes if you haven’t had much experience with child cares before. Thank you to you and all the staff.
