11.01.2022 Follow up, reconnect, keep in touch. The single easiest way to grow any business is to sell again to someone thats bought or enquired before. Are you looking for customers, more sales or just grow the business? Then just pickup the phone! The single biggest missed opportunity in 99% of businesses is they never following up. Ever! When you look at the statistics that have been done over and over again, you see a trend and regardless of whether the numbers are right or even ac...curate, it doesnt matter. The trend always looks the same. 48% of sales are never followed up. 72% never go back after a second contact On average it takes five contacts to make a sale. 99% of business dont follow up anything. A sale, an enquiry a walk-in. Nothing. And yet 80% of sales decisions are based on the first person to get back to the enquirer! I dealt with a business a year ago, that had been in direct sales for over 30 years. I walked into their office and noticed piles and piles of archive boxes stacked against the wall. I asked whats in those. They contained thousands of old fashioned 3 X 5 handwritten cards of every sale they had ever made. No CRM system, no computer database, just the cards. I asked do you ever call past clients back. No never, why? How many of those boxes would contain a name of someone that would buy again, how much could they have bought over the years, how many referrals? Its not unusual and it never ceases to amaze me, how many businesses dont have the data, or worse have it, but do nothing with it, yet keep advertising, or wondering why business isnt going that well, when the answer is right there in the past client list (somewhere). In tough economies like we have now, theres never a more important time to get the fundamentals of business growth right. Keep selling. Get on the phone. Dont stop, its a numbers game. Just get clear about the numbers. If you have salespeople, keep training them, dont stop, manage and support them weekly. And lastly, service those clients like theyve never been serviced before. Its not about one spam email after another, pick up the phone, build relationships and sell more and more. 11.01.2022 All it takes is a freckle! Ive talked many times about the need to standout, have a wow factor, do something totally unique that the other guy doesnt do and like 99% of businesses, most simply rely on price or convieniece as the differentiating factor. Well thats all great until someone drops their price or moves in next door! Like most, my wife and I like a coffee now and then, often grab a takeaway and go and sit somewhere. Coffee is pretty much coffee, whether you buy i...t in a cafe and pay anything up to $4:50 plus or from a convenience store at $1, theres not a lot of difference. Yet still, theyre generally busy, but dont all make money. Another has just closed its doors this week where I live. Last week we bought our usual coffee, and on paying, the lady behind the counter (using tongs) put a chocolate freckle on top of each cup. We both looked at each other and went wow, fantastic, "havent had a freckle for years"! How good is this! That was from a one dollar coffee place! The cost of the freckle? Maybe one cent! What does it take to standout, do something a little different. I know of a coffee shop a few years ago, that started putting tiny little biscuits and cakes on top of their coffee, people loved it. It went so well, they sold the cafe and now only make these little cakes. But still, 99% of cafes have no differentiating factor. Nothing. Its just another coffee! The trouble with our freckle coffee is it stopped, she doesnt do it anymore. Why I dont know. Was the one cent just too much? Or did she just not get what she was doing? There are around 20 to 30 cafes and places you can get coffee where I live, probably the same where you are. The coffees the same, some better, some not so good, but all around $4:50. What could that little "titbit" do, to attract more customers that kept coming back, as opposed to just the coffee alone. (You could get that anywhere!) People want more than just the product or service you sell, they want an experience, they want to be wowed. They want the freckle. 10.01.2022 The four "not so secrets" to business growth. When I sold my last business back in 2015 and then spent the next two plus years consulting, I used time in between to look closely at where businesses were going wrong. As obvious as these sound, businesses should focus attention on four simple things. * Attract as many clients as possible * Get those clients coming back... * Spending more each purchase and * Referring others that do the same. But its amazing how that focus just doesnt exist. Instead, they tend to worry about simply making one sale after another, without focusing attention on how you do it better, smarter and keep that client coming back. In September 2015 I wrote the first of many blogs about business growth that talked about five key drivers that every business misses to some degree, if not all completely. * Create awareness, attraction and interest. Project an image that stands out from the rest so that people see, find you and want to deal with you. * Develop selling skills in the team. The ability to communicate well is critical to not losing enquiries and customers, so they can followup and hold onto longer. * Service experience. Not just customer service. Its about engagement, energy and ongoing relationship that gets them back and referring others. * Marketing is confusing and getting more so, but you still need to do it. Test and measure everything, dont just keep posting once a week on Facebook and think your done, because you have 100 friends. Marketing is simply about attracting customers, then getting them to buy. Nothing else. * Staff training and support. 51% of staff are looking for another job and around 80% are disengaged but will hang around! Give them the skills they need, ensure they know what to do and support and manage. But then also treat them well with rewards and recognition that encourages them to perform as expected. Nothing has changed in regard to business fundemantals over the last five years, including how most businesses dont do them. Businesses fallover rates wont change or get better. (Its currently 92.3% of new businesses that fail in under three years! not 80% like five years ago!) and if long term corporate businesses like Jeanswest and Jamie Oliver restaurants can go down, it would be fare to ask what hope has anyone got? The answer there is simple, they missed the fundamentals too. * Evolution, evolve a little! Businesses need to change and get better, customers get bored. (How many jeans shops look exactly the same?) * Standout have a wow factor, otherwise theyre all the same and differentiated by price only. * And engagement. The secret is the client experience, engagement and energy. Ensure clients have a great experience, not just a great product and theyll be back more and more, spend more and refer their friends. Its not just about what it is you do. If you cant tell or talk to someone, articulate what it is you do easily, youve got a problem.
