18.01.2022 Meet our team! For six and a half years Rien has been refereeing futsal with Social Sport. A talented player in his own right, Rien decided to pick up the whistle after the 2014 FIFA World Cup and has never looked back. A favourite of all our Social Sport teams, Rien brings an incredibly positive attitude to work, so his regular appearances at our Box Hill and Footscray venues are always a welcome sight.... He says his favourite part about Social Sport is the legendary refs and Venue Managers, as well as all the people you meet and have a good chat with, even if they give you flack during their game! In his spare time, Rien produces and hosts ‘The Hope Initiative’ podcast, a storytelling project of everyday people (check it out here The Hope Initiative). He also likes keeping fit; running and cycling are his lockdown exercises of choice. When asked what he’d would like to say to the amazing participants of Social Sport during this difficult period he said: It’s a tough time to be a human but if we can work on some areas of our life we’ve been putting off and really utilise this down time, as a society we’ll be all the better for it. 14.01.2022 Meet our team! If you’re one of our Richmond netball teams, you will have seen the awesome Katie running along the side lines as one of our senior netball umpires. With more than 10 years of experience umpiring, Katie has made a significant contribution to Social Sport in the 3 years she has been a member of the team. Bringing an awesome attitude to work, and often being a mentor for less experienced umpires, Katie says she loves umpiring at Social Sport because the teams ar...e really fun to umpire and it’s got a great community vibe and we tend to agree! When not studying for her Masters in Education, Katie loves spending time reading and binging Disney Plus! (We know the feeling!) She's also a big fan of coffee and enjoys taking walks and staying fit and healthy! Katie is just one of a fabulous team of umpires that work incredibly hard to provide an engaging competition for all our participants! 13.01.2022 Meet our team! For over a year now, Jerry has been refereeing basketball with Social Sport. A favourite of the Western suburbs, Jerry is a regular at our Braybrook and Footscray venues! Ever since joining Social Sport, Jerry has developed a strong relationship with our participants and her colleagues always bringing a smile to the court, and a great work ethic to ensure the best experience for all our teams.... Jerry says that Social Sport is the perfect way to unwind after a long day of placements. One time she says a player cheered me on which made my whole night stress free. During isolation, Jerry has been working on her online content production skills focusing on streaming and making videos for Instagram. When asked what keeps bringing her back to Social Sport every season, Jerry simply says there’s no dull moments, and we tend to agree. 12.01.2022 Meet our team! As one of Social Sport’s longest serving futsal referees, you know you’re going to have fun when Shane has the whistle in hand on your court. Since 2008, Shane has been bringing his infectious smile and good vibes to Social Sport futsal venues across Melbourne, and has made some great memories along the way. One of Shane's favourite venues is Box Hill where he enjoys the high-quality competition, great atmosphere and "super restaurants for after futsal. Shane ...most enjoys the interaction with people from all walks of life, and loves working with a good team that is always supportive! When our competitions came to a halt in March, Shane took up the paint brushes to give his walls a fresh coat of paint, and he’s put a big focus on spending time with family, as well as eating and living healthy. Pictured below, Shane accepted his 10 years of service pin along with his colleague Enoch earlier this year. As a much loved and respected member of the team, we say here’s to 10 more years, Shane! 07.01.2022 Meet our team! Abbey is one of the dedicated and ever-positive netball umpires that make up the Social Sport match officials team. For four years, Abbey has been serving our Eastern Suburbs venues, where she has developed a strong relationship with players and staff.... Abbey began umpiring at the age of 13, and says she never looked back. When the opportunity came up to work at Social Sport, I was so excited because it was the best of both worlds, she said, super fun, and with awesome people and players! Abbey has spent isolation hitting the books and exercising! No doubt a return to the netball court will be a welcome activity for Abbey and all of the team, and we can’t wait to do exactly that. 05.01.2022 Meet our team! Mark is one of our longest serving referees and incredibly well regarded in the futsal world! For over a decade, Mark has been running the side-line of Social Sport’s futsal leagues, from juniors at Macleod, to his regular Sunday and Monday nights at Bundoora. Mark began playing soccer when he was 5, later developing a love for the Arsenal Football Club and he is not afraid to let you know about it!... He says the best part of Social Sport is meeting and making friends with players over the yearsit’s a great culture. There's no doubt Mark has been, and continues to be, a wonderful mentor for all referees new and old. During isolation, Mark has been spending time with his 2-year-old son, and enjoying some well-deserved family time. 03.01.2022 Meet our team! Enoch (E) is one of Social Sport’s longest serving referees having spent just over 10 years with whistle in hand! Pictured below, E received his 10-year pin with colleague Shane in 2019! As a staple at our Box Hill venue, E has both refereed and played in numerous finals, including a famous grand final win with his team ‘Backpassers’! When he’s not refereeing, E keeps busy by staying active, conquering the 1000 steps on a regular basis and looking after his 18-...month-old son! Importantly, E is also a ‘full-time Liverpool FC supporter’ and has spent the majority of isolation watching every game. E says he hasn’t stopped screaming "Liverpool FC Champions of England, Europe & The World! As someone who knows everything about Social Sport, E loves how competitions continue to improve and how innovation and professionalism down at the venues ensure teams never leave disappointed. Most importantly, E loves the ‘mateship’ and opportunity to extend his network, especially with futsal loving people around Melbourne! Thanks for everything you’ve done for Social Sport over the past 10 years, E! We love having you on the team and can’t wait to welcome you back to the court soon. 01.01.2022 Meet our team! Our senior netball umpire Tara has been with Social Sport for three years, and has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to our leagues across Melbourne. Tara has been umpiring netball for 18 years across all levels, and was recently selected to umpire at national level training camps. Her favourite time of the season is finals, where she loves seeing the commitment and competitiveness of participants and teams on the court!... Tara has been busy maintaining her fitness during isolation, and has even taken up some unique work opportunities on apple and strawberry farms! When asked about what she loves about Social Sport, Tara said, we have such a great bunch of people working for Social Sport and it makes you appreciate your job more, being around such a positive bunch.
