18.01.2022 JUST CONSIGNED - New to the stockroom this week . Joseph Zago (1944-2008) WITTENOOM LANDSCAPE Signed lower left... Oil on board 50 x 63cm Framed . Joseph Zago, was born in Zagreb, Croatia where he studied graphic arts. He went on to study painting in Paris, design in Rome and painting, sculpture and printmaking in Perth. . Over the course of his career, Joseph primarily focused on layering colour. This fascination led him to use the hues of oil enamel and metallic pigment we see here in "Wittenoom Landscape". Joseph then began to embrace a spiritual affinity with the energy of colour expressed in dynamic and abstract form. This work is a wonderful representation of his passion depth and layers of colour. 02.01.2022 JUST CONSIGNED - New to the stockroom this week . Gloria Tamerre Petyarre (B.1945) BUSH MEDICINE LEAVES The Aboriginal Art House catalogue number GTP423... Acrylic on canvas 147 x 89cm Unframed $2,500 . Gloria Petyarre is noted as one of the most famous Aboriginal artists from the Utopia Homelands. . Gloria was born around 1945 on Atnangkere country at Utopia in Central Australia. In 1977, when Gloria was a young woman, the Anmatyerre and Alyawerre laid claim to the freehold title of the Utopia Pastoral Lease, ending 50 years of domination by pastoralists. Two years later, the claim was granted. Since then the local Aboriginal people have made the area a haven for their traditional way of life, moving away from the stations and back into the heart of their country, banning sales of alcohol and lessening their dependence on station stores by reviving the old practices of the hunter-gatherers. . In 1988, Gloria began painting and her first work was shown in the exhibition Utopia Women’s Painting; The First Works of Canvas; a Summer Project 1988 to 1989." . Gloria's more recent paintings are firmly rooted in Bush Medicine Dreaming, as seen here in our latest consignment. This piece depicts the leaves of a particular type of shrub which has powerful medicinal qualities. Gloria Petyarre uses a range of different brush strokes in her artworks to represent the growth of the leaves at certain times of the year. See more
