23.01.2022 UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is calling today on States to urgently release refugees and asylum-seekers who are being unlawfully and arbitrarily held in detent...ion. States must act to ensure their actions are in line with international law and that amidst the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, vulnerable refugees are not being placed at heightened, unnecessary risk. Refugees fleeing war and persecution should not be punished or criminalized simply for exercising their fundamental human right to seek asylum, said Gillian Triggs, UN Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees for Protection. Measures to tackle COVID19 do not justify arbitrarily detaining them on arrival, which not only worsens the misery of people who have already suffered, but also undermines efforts to limit the spread of the virus.

01.01.2022 Hello everyone! Gifts for Manus and Nauru provides phone credit, crisis therapy and financial assistance for medical and dental needs to people held by Australia in PNG and Nauru. Mobile phone credit is crucial for people to have access to communication with their families, doctors, therapists, lawyers, UNHCR and supportive friends and advocates.... Phone credit in PNG and Nauru is expensive, and the people Australia holds offshore do not have the resources to purchase their own. (many have ZERO access to any allowance or phone access apart from what we can send from donations). So far in December, we have been able to send phone credit to 160 people. But unfortunately we are VERY low on funds and we currently have a waiting list of more than 220 people who have not yet received a top up in December. We would desperately like to be able to get each and every person a top up before the end of the month (ideally as many as possible before Christmas). Phone top ups are $45 each.
