25.01.2022 Just arrived for our Melba Intermediate Class!! <3 Parasol Fusion FTW!

25.01.2022 SWORDS!!! Two amazing workshops with Bronwyn - one already sold out and ONLY 1 PLACE LEFT in the other! :o TECHNIQUE (Waiting List Only) Like the cane dance, Raqs al-Saïf probably developed out of a playful and feminine interpretation of a men’s martial dance. Transnational fusion styling has transformed it again from a feminine ‘trick’ into a powerful expression of womanhood.... Open to dancers from all styles of belly dance, from intrepid continuing beginners to advanced, this two-hour workshop will introduce you to the exciting and impressive Raqs al-Saïf, or extend your existing sword skills through a series of manipulations and combinations that can be used independently or as a sequence that can be adapted to your favourite track. CHOREOGRAPHY (Only 1 Place Remaining) Looking to amp up your sword dance? Two is better than one! Suitable for dancers in all styles, in this two-hour workshop you will tap into your inner drama queen, building on the movements covered in the earlier workshop and learning a double sword choreography that will add a majestic intensity to your set. Register for workshops here: ghawazeemoon.com.au/summer.html

20.01.2022 FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES RESUME IN TERM 3!! With some restrictions now lifted in the ACT, we are returning to face-to-face dance classes in term 3 and will be back to our usual shennanigans! Hoooray! As we manage all the challenges of current restrictions, and changes in people's lives, there have been some slight adjustments to the timetable as we move forward. ... > Classes will have slightly smaller maximum numbers. Though we standardly run with smaller classes, please do register early to avoid missing out on your preferred class. > Monday nights have moved from Gungahlin to Nellie Hall. > Thursday classes will have a slightly earlier schedule for those people who like to get to bed before 10pm! > Our Percussion Circle will continue to be suspended until we have a further easing of restrictions around person per m2. Hopefully this will happen before Term 3 begins, or early in the term! Please send a message if you'd like to be notified when sessions resume. > Our Troupe Rehearsals will continue to be suspended until we have a further easing of restrictions around person per m2. > We will, sadly, not be holding a Showcase this year. But will be participating in as many community performances as possible once they are running again! If you have contacted us for notification of registrations opening, you will receive a text/email (as preferred) on Monday. If you have previously selected auto-enrol, you will receive an invoice for the next term on Monday as well. Register for classes via the website: http://ghawazeemoon.com.au/timetable.html

20.01.2022 Registrations for Term 2 Classes are now open! Fingers crossed we'll be having our Showcase this year (17th of July), so Intermediate classes are closed to continuing students only. For dancers who are new, there are 3 beginner classes on offer. For experienced dancers, our advanced class is open for those who want to work on technique and developing their own dance style. Register via the website: http://ghawazeemoon.com.au/timetable/

20.01.2022 Keeping us all Safe <3 In order to allow students who need, or want, to self-isolate to continue learning, from this week we will begin recording classes which will be posted (the next day) on the school's vimeo account (linked through our Team App) for students to access. This means if you can't come to class, or don't want to come to class, you can still keep up with the choreographies and techniques we will be learning in class.... If we reach a point where we need, or want, to cancel classes, I will video class content for you to access (aiming to do so, so you can access it during class time), and we will finish the term online. At this stage, as we are not a group of 500, we should be able to practice good hygiene, and manage appropriate social distancing during class. You will be asked to: 1. Wash hands on entering buildings/dance spaces.(Gungahlin Classes can access through the front sliding doors for easy access to bathrooms). (Melba Classes can access through the side door into the bathroom area). Please remember that our dance spaces are used by many other people, and are likely not cleaned daily (though are often cleaned just before we arrive). 2. Attempt to maintain a good distance between yourself and other dancers. (Recommended 1-1.5m). Any choreographies we are currently learning that require closer positioning will be practiced differently, any hand touching in choreographies will be "pretend" for now. 3. Stay at home if you are feeling generally unwell or have any "classic" symptoms. Even if it's just a regular cold - we don't want to risk people doubling up on illnesses. 4. Cough into your elbow ... though really, that is standard practice now, yes? Please let me know if you're planning to stay home. If you haven't managed to access TeamApp yet, please send me a message and I'll walk you through the process, or sign you up manually. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_19K9zaSS4

19.01.2022 Registrations are now open for Term Two Online! Classes start on Monday 4th May. All continuing and returning students are welcome to join. If you have previously participated in classes, but have had difficulty getting back, the Finale Choreo Class (Tuesdays 12pm and 6:30pm) might be just what you're looking for! Of course, you are welcome to join other classes as well. Beginners classes run at no cost if you are participating as an additional class. Classes will run online... via Zoom with a 15min gap between each class to manage possible delays and give people participating in multiple classes an opportunity to refresh water, speak with family members, etc. between classes. Learning support materials (videos on vimeo, notes and music on dropbox) will be available through TeamApp links. You don't need to download TeamApp, but you do need to have a profile. You can access through your browser by signing into the TeamApp website. Due to the complexities with learning online, classes are not open to absolute beginners this term, but continuing beginners are most welcome to join. All things going to plan, we should be back to in-person classes in Term 3. If you have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 restrictions or loss of employment, please do note this on your registration. I can organise a payment plan or scholarship to assist you to keep dancing. http://ghawazeemoon.com.au/timetable.html

19.01.2022 Due to continuing hazardous air quality in the ACT, and no sign of it easing in the near future, we have had to make the sad decision to cancel our Summer Workshops & Events for 2020. This was both an easy and a difficult decision to make. Difficult because all the wonderful teachers were looking forward to dancing with you and bringing some joy to a stressful and smoke-filled start to the new year.... Very easy because the health of students and our workshop teachers must always come first. With it now being almost impossible to keep smoke out of buildings, and the recommendation for the young, the elderly, pregnant people and those with asthmatic conditions to leave the area, the safest option is to not be dancing in these very toxic conditions. Some good news is that I have spoken to the co-organisers of the Canberra Casbah Festival, and we will be aiming to include as many of these workshops in the Festival workshop program as possible. So there will be another opportunity for you to dance with the wonderful teachers involved later in the year. Dancers already registered have been contacted by email and requested to send bank details so that full refunds can be made for fees already paid. Thank you for your understanding. Stay Safe Everyone.

19.01.2022 One of the things we try to encourage in order to dance sustainably is to re-use, upcycle and repair our costumes. We have a crafternoon once a term to share skills and assist students in creating their own costumes from all sorts of things. Our next crafternoon is on the 22nd March. If you'd like to come along to learn how to repair a coin scarf, or coin belt, cover a bra, or even how to make an entire costume from all sorts of things, you can start hunting around your hous...e, check out The Green Shed, or look out for pre-loved costumes for sale. Some of the things you can gather up are: Broken jewellery or old jewellery (maybe that one earring you just don't want to let go of? :) ) Fabric offcuts Pre-loved formal gowns Pre-loved sheets and doonah covers Broken coin scarves (we all have one that is falling apart) Rescue a piece from someone's discarded fabric stash (you can often find pieces of fabric at thrift and charity shops). Pre-loved cushion covers and scarves A bra that still has great cups but the elastic is shot Unlined curtains Maybe you've found a fabulous pre-loved costume and need help getting it to fit you? Maybe you have an old costume that needs a make-over? There are lots of things you can do that will reduce your impact on the environment and still have you looking amazing on stage! <3 https://www.52climateactions.com/buy-less-make-more

01.01.2022 Yesterday, with the Government declaring a Public Health Emergency, we made the difficult, but i hope ultimately responsible, decision to put all classes online to finish the term. As always the health and well-being of our students (along with their families, and extended community) is our first priority. We'll be doing (hopefully) a mix of recorded and live-streaming to keep us going. Doubtless there will be some hiccoughs along the way as we all get used to it, but I'm sur...e there'll be a lot of laughs too! I’m not super happy about it, but I feel that it's the right thing to do, and means we can do our bit to help flatten the curve. I hope that in a few weeks/a months time, you will all still be well and happy, and that this will seem like a massive over-reaction. A massive thank you to students who have been supportive of this decision. Hopefully 2020 will decide to give us a small break as we head into Winter. https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-act-declares-/12058658
