21.01.2022 An interesting article. Sometimes it seems we make all the decisions for students. Perhaps they need to make some for themselves. Take some risks and explore!
21.01.2022 Hello awesome parents and care givers! There seems to be some confusion around the next few days, so I thought I would clear it up. Giant Steps Tasmania is open for regular business tomorrow October 30th. Some Government and Independent Schools are having a student free day, but not us. ... We are closed for the long weekend (No school Monday 2nd November)and will be back in action on Tuesday November 3rd
21.01.2022 Welcome back! Today is the first day of students for 2021 and the staff are all very excited to have the students back! Please see the attached photo to see the staff working diligently So as you can imagine we are keen to have the students back as it is much more fun with them here. We hope that everyone has had a great break and we look forward to an excellent 2021.

20.01.2022 FREE WEBINAR ON RETURNING TO SCHOOL - PREPARING FOR CHANGE As COVID-19 restrictions ease, schools across the country are managing the return of students. For so...me, this has happened quickly. For others, it has been a staged process that will continue throughout term 2 and possibly beyond. For students on the autism spectrum, returning to a school environment that may look, feel and operate very differently, may present its challenges. We invite you to join us for a Q and A webinar where we will have the opportunity to explore some of the questions and concerns you may have about your child’s return to school. If you have a question you would like discussed, please add it in the question box at the time of registration. Be part of an interactive hour where you get the opportunity to listen, share and learn with parents/carers, teachers and others who support individuals on the autism spectrum. All of our webinars are free and all participants that attend receive a certificate following the completion of the webinar. There are two different session times to choose from. Tuesday 19 May, 2020 12pm AEST Tuesday 19 May, 2020 7.30pm AEST To register for one of our sessions, click here - https://www.positivepartnerships.com.au//returning-to-scho

18.01.2022 So often our AAC learners get bombarded with questions and directions. We have things we want to know and we're trying to get through the day. The problem is th...at constant questioning can increase anxiety, make the interaction less enjoyable, and teach them that their primary role is to be a responder. That's not what we want or intend! Declarative language is a great way to change the dynamic! See more

14.01.2022 Although things might be stressful, we have been given a gift of time with our kids. Sure, it can be hard to be in close quarter, but it’s also a brilliant time... to connect. To inspire you, I made this calendar with daily suggestions. Please share the activities you’ve been doing with your children. We can all benefit from inspiration at this time, and you never know if your connection idea will be something that is valuable to someone else. We are in this together and we will get through this together! To get the calendar, visit here: https://makesociallearningstick.com/coping-with-overwhelm-/

08.01.2022 Today we are sharing the page of a young man on the spectrum who takes awesome photography of diecast cars. I stumbled across his work as I am a bit of a collector of diecast cars myself and I was amazed at some of the excellent photos he takes. He really has a unique eye for detail and perspective. I am also sharing this as it is a great inspiration for our students to see another young person on the spectrum doing excellent things. Autism does not define our students and we certainly hope they will find ways to shine like Anothony has. Have a look at Anthony's photos and send him some words of encouragement.
08.01.2022 Due to technical issues we will not be able to send out a newsletter today. Apologies and we will get one out early next week. Our server had decided to have a moment!

08.01.2022 ATTENTION ALL! We need your old, unloved and surplus to requirements ceramic tiles! We are doing some mosaic projects in each of the class groups and we would really like some more tiles to help us with this.... Any colour, shape or pattern would be useful. They will be broken up into little pieces so do not give us Great Aunt Ethel's Hand Painted Porcelain Plates. So if there are some leftover tiles from a project or some dusty unloved tiles in the back of the shed please consider sending them our way. They can be dropped at the school or sent in on the school buses, any method that is convenient. If you cannot get them to us, please feel free to give us a call and we may be able to pick them up. 03 63 622522 THANK YOU!

05.01.2022 Children and young People with Disability: Education Survey 2020 - Learning in a time of crisis COVID-19 (Coronavirus) (Link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5LQ2...M63) Every year CYDA completes a National Education Survey. This year our survey is different because of the COVID-19 situation. We will use the information to advocate to government about the needs of children and young people with disability during this time. The survey will be open all through May and it will be vital to capture as much feedback as possible on the education of students with disability as they have experienced learning from home and as they transition back to face to face learning. We are hoping you can complete this survey about the education experiences for students with disability and we want to hear from you as either: - a young person with disability - a parent or carer of a child or young person with disability This online survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. 05.01.2022 This is NOT! As a part of Bianca’s critical thinking lessons this year we have been doing ‘Think outside the Box’. These lessons are a favourite among both students and staff at Giant Steps Tasmania. During these lessons’ students are given part of an outline which is NOT the most obvious object, and are asked to turn it into something different. This activity promotes imagination and problem solving skills, utilises critical and creative thinking and allows students to recog...nise and respect the differing opinions of others. We loved our ideas so much that we have turned our work into 6 amazing books to share with everyone! Each book is a professionally published 20X20cm hardcover book. All proceeds from these books will go to purchasing new resources for Giant Steps Tasmania. These books are a great addition to your home library, as gifts for family and friends, or if you work with children they are an excellent teaching resource. Order now in time for Christmas!! All art work is students original work. We are super proud of everyone’s efforts and help to make these books! We really hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Contact [email protected] for more information or to place an order.
