25.01.2022 Council meeting part 2: Good news: my single-use plastics motion passed unanimously!
25.01.2022 Thrilled to bits that the Parliament of Tasmania just passed Greens Motion 351 to "investigate how a Jobs Guarantee program could be adopted in lutruwita/Tasmania to strengthen our COVID recovery and support economic transition to tackle the climate emergency." Australia needs a job guarantee and Tasmania can make a good start helping creating a society that works for people, for place and for nature. https://www.parliament.tas.gov.au/ha/hanote.pdf
25.01.2022 Voluntary assisted dying to become law in Tasmania. Thank you to everyone who fought so hard.
24.01.2022 Kingborough Council meeting is now live. Join us as we debate my important motion about banning single-use plastics!
23.01.2022 A missed opportunity tonight as Kingborough Council voted against committing to a target of Net Zero Emissions for council activities by 2035. The vote was lost 5 to 5. A tied vote at a meeting results in the motion being determined in the negative. What is most baffling about this decision is that the report was clear that by not adopting the target, our Council could be exposed to extreme financial costs to balance future GHG emissions down the track. The report said that... the "Leadership Goal" would have cumulative savings of $26.6 million. But some argued that they would be voting against the proposal because of upfront costs. The modelling shows that the cost of inaction on emissions dwarfs the upfront investment that comes with prudent planning and preparation. You can read the full report from pg 17 to 83 of tonight’s council agenda, including that quote at item 5.4 on page 77. See more
21.01.2022 Congratulations Kingborough Lions!

18.01.2022 Recently, I've been noticing log trucks carrying very large logs heading south on the Huon Highway. Here is one such example snapped Thursday morning near Kingston. I'm curious about where these trees are from, where they are going, the circumstances under which they fell and what will become of them. If you know, please tell.
17.01.2022 Very pleased to report that Kingborough Council has agreed to implement a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service commencing in October 2021. Thanks to all councillors and the amazing Council staff for progressing this 9 months ahead of schedule and of course to the Tasmanian Greens for keeping waste reduction and climate action on the agenda! We introduced GO late last year and there's been an uptake by 7299 properties so I'm excited to add FO to the GO!
16.01.2022 Another important Council meeting coming up tomorrow night, starting at 5:30pm and live-streamed on Kingborough Council's Facebook page. Starting on page 11 of the agenda, let me know what you think of item 16.1 "Properties for potential disposal" - I'm very interested to hear your thoughts! You can email me at [email protected]
15.01.2022 Kingborough has many amazing sports & recreation clubs. They bring the community together & improve our health and wellbeing. Very pleased to attend the Kingston Croquet Club’s Spring Festival today and even try my hand on the lawn!

08.01.2022 Thanks to the Art Farm Birchs Bay Committee for welcoming us to the 2020 Sculpture Prize Exhibition. Lots of excellent, though-provoking pieces on display.
07.01.2022 It was a privilege to present one of the awards today at Taroona High School for the SRC Scholarship Program. Thanks to the efforts of the SRC and the support of their teachers, this excellent program considerably exceeded its fundraising target. The money raised will now help progress the talents and interests of many talented students and young leaders. Thank you Taroona High for having me!
06.01.2022 A big night tonight at Kingborough Council. An audio issue disrupted the live stream. Despite my request to defer the debate on item "17.1 Properties for Disposal" on page 40 of tonight’s agenda, I was outvoted and the debate proceeded. Thankfully, two blocks of land will be kept in council-ownership and will not be privatised: the plot at Alonnah (PID 5061726) and the block at 31 Gemalla Road in Margate will not be sold by Council. I tried my best to keep other properties in... community-ownership but was outvoted. Whilst I welcome much needed improvements to open space, play space and passive recreation at the locations listed below, I'd prefer to work positively with local residents to get positive outcomes for our playgrounds and open space without resorting to liquidating appreciating assets that should rightfully belong to the community for public benefit. Thank you to everyone who provided a submission or talked with me about this issue over the last few weeks. I know how important this matter is to so many people. Audio of the debate will be uploaded to Council's website soon. The full resolution is below. That: a) Council resolves to sell the following properties by listing with an agent on the open market in accordance with the provisions of Section 177 and 178 of the Local Government Act 1993, with the proceeds from the sale to be transferred to the Open Space Fund and allocated for investment in accordance with the Kingborough Play Space and Playground Strategy 20202025 and Kingborough Play Space and Playground Audit 2020 as follows: 1. 110 Channel Highway, Taroona (following relocation of the stormwater main) with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Louisa Hinsby Park, Taroona; 2. Lot 2, Mt Pleasant Road, Kingston with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Willowbend Park, Kingston; 3. 281 Roslyn Avenue, Blackmans Bay with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Alamo Close Park, Blackmans Bay; and; 4. 41 Hiern Road, Blackmans Bay (following the creation of an easement on the title to provide a public right of way through to the Opal Drive Reserve) with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Donohoe Gardens, Blackmans Bay; b) The balance of any remaining funds to be held in the Open Space Fund for investment in accordance with relevant strategic plans. c) Council revisit the sale of the land at Alonnah if there has been no substantial progress from the community in developing it as a public space within 12 months.
06.01.2022 We need to properly invest for the long-term to make sure our infrastructure can withstand tough storms. In this video from last Monday's council meeting, I raise the issue and note that a Street Tree Strategy will go some way to helping.
