20.01.2022 "Unlike most of us, Rebecca Anderson (Gidget Angel) was prepared for postpartum depression. She had struggled with depression most of her life. So, when she fell pregnant with her first baby she put in place mental health measures that most mums dont even think about. I thought I had everything planned out, if things were to go south with my mental health again However, postnatal depression was nothing like she had experienced before.... It was completely different to what I experienced for the 15 years prior to becoming a mum In this episode of Tough Mothers - Dr Jennifer Hacker Pearson PhD , Bec shares her story of deep depression and anxiety, and how she attempted to take her own life. She shares how her depression has affected her motherhood journey, and the techniques she uses along the way to help support herself." Listen now: https://toughmothers.com/ep1/

We recently shared this very intimate insight into the heart of Gidget Foundation Australia for the lovely team at Suicide Prevention Australia and it is now online. It was that connection to the very human story behind... a charity that is about to turn 20 years old." Read the full story at the link below:

"While we have a happy, healthy baby, and that is the most important thing [to us], it was definitely not the experience that we thought we were going to be having," Ms Andrews said." This is such an important, and commonly felt impact of COVID-19. ... 16.01.2022 Expectant and new parents like Aviva need our support now more than ever Aviva is a Gidget Angel and also one of the mums whose life has been changed thanks to the support of our amazing, caring community. The more I researched online, the more I realised how common perinatal depression and anxiety was, and how many women were suffering in silence. I went to great lengths to find this information, seek help, and while I was out there in the thick of it, helping others goin...g through the same thing helped me in ways I can’t really explain. We were all so terrified, we all needed each other and honestly, it’s this kind of community and the help of Gidget Foundation Australia that got me through it in the end. (Aviva, Gidget Angel) This November, we are encouraging the community to come together, connect, and host an event (face to face or virtual) or bake in support of Gidget Foundation Australia. By supporting Bun in the Oven this November, you will be creating a sense of community and raising funds for parents in need like Aviva. 12.01.2022 A dad's perspective on Pregnancy and Infant Loss. Greg and our Gidget Angel Jodie lost their beautiful boy Hamish when he was stillborn. Gidget Foundation Australia supported Jodie through this unimaginable loss, and we have so much love for this family who share their story to support others.... Greg shared these words for Hamish's 3rd birthday recently. Dads are sometimes left out of this conversation so we want to do everything we can to ensure they are heard. "My buddy Hamish Joseph every year it doesn’t get easier. I long to wake up thinking it’s all been a horrible dream and you run into my arms with your sister. I forever repeat the image of your mother and I being told you’ve gone, looking at my wife crying not knowing why her first child has gone who was with us only a day or more before. It hurts me I could not save you and make your mum better. But I now accept you came into my life for these reasons which made me a better man, husband and father for coming into my life. I think about you every morning and night son. Happy 3rd birthday buddy I love you."

12.01.2022 "Baking is time for ME amongst the chaos of being a working mother. Baking also brings people together many of the people purchasing my cupcakes are sharing them with family and friends. I contacted Gidget Foundation Australia when I found out I was pregnant with twins. They helped me find acceptance during my twin pregnancy and provided support post-birth. Without their support, my story would have been very different. Support for families during and post the COVID pandemi...c is vital and when I saw that demand had increased by 80% I saw this as my way to contribute." 11.01.2022 THANK YOU (and congratulations!) to our amazing Ambassadors Tara Rushton and Cooper Cronk who despite being a very private family, appeared in Stellar magazine over the weekend. "However, the power couple chose to join forces now to shine a spotlight on charity organisation Gidget Foundation Australia, which supports the mental wellbeing of new and expecting parents. We were introduced to the foundation when Lenny was born and it really opened us both up to the important wor...k it does, Rushton says. There’s such a level of uncertainty with COVID, and those levels of anxiety just increase when you’re bringing a bub into the world it’s more complicated than ever. So many people suffer in silence, but you don’t have to. We’ve been championing the foundation’s cause for a couple of years now because the work it does really resonated with us.

07.01.2022 "Fuelled by the pressures of parenting twins, Jo Smith threw herself into the home garden when they were little. "I went through postnatal depression with the twins and the garden has absolutely saved my life," she said. It is situated on a picturesque four-hectare property on Bruny Island in Tasmania's south-east, overlooking the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.... This is the young mother's happy place, a lush and bountiful vegetable garden. "It's been a saviour," she said. We love that this amazing mamma found such hope in her garden, and that she has now fed almost 600 of her neighbours and also invites other women to connect and nourish themselves in the garden

07.01.2022 Our incredibly brave Gidget Angel, Peta Dampney, was recently interviewed on the Making Sense of Chaos podcast. It is a raw interview, with a lot of sensitive and potentially triggering content as Peta speaks about suicide. We don't ever want to shy away from these important conversations. "I want others with a lived experience of mental illness to know that it is possible to have a child. But, we need to be honest and we need to be real about the difficulties we face by doin...g so. Even more, we need to be better supported and encouraged. I hope that by sharing my story and working with others in a similar boat as me that we can all take turns paddling to get to where we need to be so much more quickly and easily. (Peta Dampney, an excerpt from her Gidget Angel story which you can find on our website)

07.01.2022 "My rock bottom happened when I was attempting something that looked like self-care by going to the gym. As soon as I put nine-month-old Poppy in the car to head to the session, she started crying. Its as though I lost total control. I spent the entire time of that half-hour car trip screaming, yelling, crying hot, tired tears at my baby girl. There werent words. Only screaming and tears (from both of us). When I arrived at the gym, I realised that I had no memory of the tr...ip. I was driving unsafely; I was screaming at my baby and I feared what would be next if I didnt ask for help. So, I called my husband, I made an appointment with my GP and with my psychologist. Slowly but surely, I made my way out of the darkness." Thank you to Libby Trickett for always sharing so honestly about your experience of PNDA. It is possible to make your way out of the darkness. Please reach out for support if you are struggling. Our caring support team is available to answer any questions about the support we have available: Phone: 1300 851 758 Email: [email protected]

07.01.2022 The Gidget team had our own special little launch for Women's Health Week this morning! On our Zoom together, we used the 'Let's talk' cards as a prompt to each share something that we pledge to do this Women's Health Week to take care of our physical or emotional wellbeing. As a team of women who work together to take care of parents experiencing perinatal depression and anxiety, we realise the importance of taking care of ourselves too. ... We are far from perfect when it comes to self-care, but we are always looking out for each other, and today we shared a variety of personal pledges that you may find some inspiration in too: - Take a lunch break to eat away from my desk more mindfully - Let go of perfectionism and embrace 'good enough' - Schedule more breaks to spend time with family and friends - Be more present by using a gratitude journal - Focus on taking care of my personal grooming as this always makes me feel better and more in control - Walk more and simply listen to the sounds around me - Find and enjoy the spaces between all of the work and activity and try not to fill them with something else - Say yes to playing with my kids when they ask - Enjoy a new guided meditation at the end of each day to switch off - Focus on keeping calm when things are hectic around me

04.01.2022 During Womens Health Week, Gidget Foundation Australia is encouraging expectant and new parents to check in on their health and pick up the phone if theyre not feeling okay. Despite fears the pandemic will leave long-term mental health scarring, the government is set to cease Medicare-rebated telehealth services for all Australians on Sept 30 and we are calling for the government to standardise a 20 session Perinatal Treatment Plan. New independent research reveals telehe...alth services have delivered equal, if not better results, on clinical screening measures for depression and anxiety. "Having a baby is a huge time of transition for new parents and for some people, leaving the house can feel overwhelming. The priority during this time should be on rest, recovery, establishing feeding, and bonding with your new baby. The Start Talking telehealth services mean new parents dont have to travel far away from their support networks, they can just focus on getting the support and love they need from their session." It asks organisations, policymakers, and the community to work towards seven goals and suggests actions to help achieve those goals. ... The goals: - Society recognises and values both parents equally - Health policy addresses the health and wellbeing of both parents - The health system supports the proactive engagement of both parents - Health professionals are willing and able to support men and women - Both parents are prepared for the transition to parenthood - Parents who experience loss, distress or are struggling with parenthood receive the care they need - Practice is evidence-informed and shaped by the lived experiences of both men and women Do you commit to the Case for Change with us? Gidget Foundation Australia was founded almost 20 years ago, when we lost a beautiful young mum to suicide. Gidget will always be at the heart of everything we do. By talking about it, we can start to share our knowledge. ... By sharing our knowledge, we can work together towards a world without suicide. We can all make a difference in the lives of those who might be struggling by having regular, meaningful conversations about lifes ups and downs.
