18.01.2022 Our brains can be likened to a bicycle. (Ian Byrdseed - Byrdseed.com) Bikes have a minimum speed and can only be ridden so slowly before they fall over. In fact, bikes actually become more stable when they roll faster. Link this analogy to our gifted students If our classes move too slowly, gifted students’ brains become wobbly. The students become bored and that’s often when we see poor behaviour. Gifted students simply have a higher minimum speed limit. They NEED to move faster than their peers to learn. Just as a bicycle won’t stay up when it’s barely rolling, we can’t expect students to sit still when lessons are moving slowly.
17.01.2022 Often students (and particularly gifted students) need to know why they are learning something. This is a great resource for teachers - a list of topics with videos of the topic used in real life situations.
16.01.2022 I know I’ve reached or challenged gifted students when I see the ‘sparkle’ in their eyes. ‘We know that when gifted kids are engaged in novelty and depth in learning their whole brains light up.’

11.01.2022 It was a privilege to be invited to present at a Day of Excellence at Mueller College. Together with Bundaberg Christian College they organised a very engaging day for over 90 gifted and/or talented students. My workshop was on perfectionism and the fear of failure. These two schools are doing fantastic work in their goal of allowing each child to reach his or her potential.
09.01.2022 So true! It’s more than an academic function.
09.01.2022 Teachers || www.nrichmaths.org is an excellent resource for planning for your high ability and gifted Maths students. Www.primarylearning.com.au has mapped the nrich investigations to the Australian Curriculum
09.01.2022 ‘For gifted learners, an appropriately differentiated classroom will provide [experiences] that are complex enough, abstract enough, open-ended enough, and multifaceted enough to cause gifted students to stretch in knowledge, thinking and production’. (Carol Ann Tomlinson: Meeting Needs in the Regular Classroom’. ) How do we, as busy teachers, do this? We use Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). When we differentiate, it needs to be about students’ thinking. A great test: doe...s this challenge the student to the point that they need a little help?’ This means we’re finally entering the student’s ZPD. Unfortunately, many gifted students rarely spend time there. There are four layers of differentiation to consider to help each student work in his or her ZPD: content, process, pace and product. #differentation #zoneofproximaldevelopment #qldteachers #aussieteachers #iteachgifted #learners
08.01.2022 Teachers|| What to do with high ability Maths students in your classrooms when you have such a vast range of abilities to differentiate for? Here are some go-to resources when subject acceleration is not an option at your school.
08.01.2022 These types of comments are often made about students with high intellectual potential but are applied here to athletes of high physical potential. Can you imagine these comments being made by a sporting commentator about an athlete? Source: Elissa McKay #giftednessinchildren #highintellectualpotential #giftededucationprogram #iteachgifted
07.01.2022 Brené Brown has launched #Daringclassrooms The teacher resources are free on the website. She writes ‘We must be guardians of spaces that allow children to breath, be curious and explore the world and be who they are without suffocation.’ Imagine a world where all students, including the gifted, can be themselves

02.01.2022 I recently co-authored an article in the latest edition of the Queensland Association for Gifted and Talented Children’s Mindscape magazine. The article is for teachers (and parents too) about using the recommendations from psychologists on IQ tests to help gifted students in our classes.
