11.01.2022 VALE // Dr Michelle Bannister-Tyrrell 20/11/1958 3/9/2020 Michelle passed away from Motor Neurone Disease on Thursday 3 September. Michelle had a teaching career spanning more than three decades in primary and secondary education. She began her journey in gifted education at Charles Sturt University, completing a Master’s of Education (Gifted Education/Leadership). She studied under Professor Louise Mares, one of the first academics to introduce Gifted Education into Austra...lia. After spending many years in schools Michelle moved to the University of New England where she lectured in gifted education to undergraduate and post graduate students. She supervised a number of Masters and Doctoral students researching issues in gifted education. Her research included rural and remote gifted issues, twice exceptionality from preschool to secondary students, gifted Aboriginal issues, online delivery for gifted students, metacognition and critical thinking, spending time as a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge. Michelle completed a PhD titled - The engagement of metacognition during critical literacy discourse by young talented readers. She won the 2014 Beth Southwell Outstanding Education Thesis Award and the 2015 John Geake Outstanding Thesis Award. Michelle was passionate about twice exceptional gifted students. This passion drove her to take a co-leadership role in the first National Research project studying teachers’ knowledge and understanding of Twice Exceptionality. Michelle was working on a second national research project trying to assess the number of students in Australian schools who may be twice exceptional when she became ill. Michelle presented at numerous state, national and international conferences on a range of topics related to gifted education. She also published a number of articles and book chapters on various aspects of gifted education. Michelle’s motivation to study and conduct research into gifted education was driven by a keen understanding of the critical importance of meeting the unique education needs of gifted students. Her contribution to gifted education research is immense, and she will be sorely missed. See more
