11.01.2022 Like, Tag & Share your thoughts! CREATING SHARED VALUE BY SALARY SACRIFICING WORK DOGS Publishing the phrase ‘Sacrificing Work Dogs’ is a sure way to raise a few eyebrows, if not a red flag from Facebook’s ethics committee. But before ya’ll rain down fire, let me explain.... . In a world of division, there’s no doubt that a good dog is worth his weight in gold well perhaps not literally, but they are very valuable. Not only do they represent a financial value, but their healing power of companionship has an immeasurable value, both emotionally and mentally. Another agreeable fact is that skilled labour in agriculture is a real issue and has been for some time. Basic economics says in this example, that when demand for labour outweighs the supply, cost of production increases. . This puts the pressure on management, and it’s not as black and white as asking ‘How do I decrease costs to maximise profit?’ but rather ‘How do I increase efficiencies to maximise production?’. Instead of pulling at only one end of the string to reduce costs, good businesses also pull at the other end of the string to increase production. The level of profit depends on how much we can stretch the string and increase the gap. . So how can we increase this gap? The answer is to increase efficiency in a sustainable way. ‘Sustainable’ is the key word here remember that demanding more from employees without the aid of increased resources WILL create tension, resulting in the piece of string turning into a snake. We all know pulling on both ends of a snake is NOT sustainable, because someone’s going to get bit. . This is where ‘Creating Shared Value’ comes in.. . Put simply, creating shared value is generating a situation where it’s a win-win scenario for the business and the employee. What if a business gave employees the option of salary sacrificing their work dogs? This would see employers paying upfront for the dog, with employees having part of their pre-taxed salary set aside as repayments, much the same as a builder does with power tools or an agent does with their car. . The benefits of such an initiative would: 1) See the employer get their increased labour efficiencies by providing employees immediate access to quality work dogs (and education). 2) The employee would experience a meaningful impact and reduction on the day-to-day stresses of the work environment, not to mentioned decreasing their taxable income. 3) Breeders/Trainers would have a larger market to sell into, unlocking market potential. . Creating value to farming enterprises remains the challenge for working dog breeders/trainers and its conversations like this that will help break down those barriers. . Perhaps this is ‘Pie in the sky’ stuff, but an interesting conversation to have none the less.. See more
