25.01.2022 Just a reminder tomorrow is our SCOPING WORKSHOP (Happy Horses Birthday ). We will be kicking off at 8.30 and scoping for most of the day - anyone interested in seeing the procedure is welcome to attend.

24.01.2022 Meet Mocha. Mocha was in need of some dental care to treat his incisor malocclusion. Alpacas have 6 incisor teeth on the bottom jaw that meet up with the dental pad on the top jaw. These teeth are used to scrape food off surfaces where alpacas would traditionally graze. This abrasive process helps keep the length of the teeth at a normal level but in softer conditions the incisors can become too long and require floating to bring them back in line. Mocha was a fabulous patient and was happy to pose at the end of his procedure!!

24.01.2022 Tips to manage your animals during extremely hot weather.... make large ice bricks with old icecream containers and put into your pets water supply (chooks can benefit from this) provide a shallow pool for wallowing in (eg kids clam shell) short nosed breeds such as pugs/frenchies/bulldogs may need an air conditioned environment to prevent respiratory distress lay out wet towels in the shade for your pets to chillax on... don’t be alarmed if their appetite is reduced in hot weather - many dogs may prefer to eat breakfast rather than dinner in the cooler part of the day feed raw frozen flaps as a treat/doggy iceblock ensure paddock animals can access shade and water check water availability on a regular basis - a horse without water for 24 hours in 40 degree weather can become very unwell provide an area where your pet can dig into dirt as soil temperature will be cooler reserve yarding, riding, ball play or strenuous exercise for the cooler times of the day - for everyone’s comfort!! sprinklers are sooo much fun!!! 18.01.2022 TRAVELLING WITH PETS Borders are open and many people are heading across the state this summer. With the rise in pet ownership so will many pets be transported on holidays this year too! Here are a few tips to make your journey a smooth one don’t make the long trip your pets first trip in the car, do many shorter trial runs prior to a big trip to test the waters... like kids young pups will often develop travel sickness - frequent stops, empty stomachs, good airflow and materials for cleaning up are a must. As they age this will subside your pets must be physically restrained in the vehicle do not feed pets prior to travel animals often take comfort in confinement have your pet securely restrained when you stop to prevent escape spend some time training your pet how to behave in the car with practice runs around town and a helping hand beware of exposure if your pet is on the back of the Ute in the sun for highly anxious pets there are medications that can be used however training and practice at an early age is a far better option HAPPY HOLIDAYS & SAFE TRAVELS See more

15.01.2022 All I want for Christmas is a brand new puppy The wish of many a boy and girl each Christmas is a new puppy or kitten to love and to hold. The joys of pet ownership can by no means be overstated. Animals provide hours of listening time, comfort in companionship, loyalty, a motivation to be energetic, life skills in training and caring for them. Numerous studies have cited the psychological benefits to pet ownership. But it needs to be stated that many of these endorphins ...releasing qualities do not come without hard work! Pet ownership comes with great responsibility. It is extremely rewarding but it is never ending. Whilst many new pet owners are aware of potential cost related to lifesaving vaccination, worming, feeding and desexing, some other needs may be overlooked. Adequate fencing to keep your pet at home and safe, a pen to allow your pet down time while you’re kids have a birthday party, the time required each day to interact and train your pet - to create that longed for bond and desired obedience, a safe environment to socialise your pet to reduce inter-dog aggression and make walk times happier. Whilst many of these things do not cost money they do require time, perisistence and patience. They are also the primary reason many dogs end up in shelters or needing rehoming. Please remember these absolute requirements as all dogs need a leader and they will look to you their owner for this guidance. Pet ownership is one of the most rewarding, soul filling experiences one can have but think carefully and choose wisely this Christmas. See more

15.01.2022 How do you know if your pet has a tooth ache??? Dental disease is the most common problem we diagnose in our companion animals. Plaque and tartar develop on the teeth leading to gum erosion and eventually loss of teeth and weakened bone. Signs can include: Smelly mouth Drooling and licking... Changed food preferences OR NO OUTWARD SIGNS AT ALL!! Dental health impacts your pet’s overall health and wellbeing. Dental disease can affect your pet’s kidneys, liver and heart. Phone 02 68471129 to book a FREE dental check. *August is Pet Dental Awareness Month

15.01.2022 Beat the mosquitoes this summer... call in with your dog for a FREE HEARTWORM test. Heart worm does not need dog to dog contact to spread and causes potentially fatal heart failure if dogs are infected. It can be easily prevented with a single ONCE YEARLY injection. We’ll try not to let this big mozzie get you while your here

14.01.2022 Have you purchased new rams for the breeding season? Ovine brucellosis can have a huge impact on flock fertility and therefore on your bottom line. Consider a simple blood test to screen for this disease in your rams prior to joining. See the link below for a video on how to PALPATE YOUR RAMS. Phone 68471129 for more info. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZi22RBqblw

12.01.2022 Mozzies driving you crazy? Spare a thought for our animals! 11.01.2022 Do you travel with your pets to coastal areas? Then BEWARE the PARALYSIS TICK! Milo, our well travelled friend, was away working with his owners a week before his emergency visit to us. He developed a weakness in his back legs and a high pitched bark - classic signs of paralysis tick bite, but given these ticks do not occur in our inland areas, not something that is usually on our radar! Fortunately we are equipped to deal with most emergencies, even the out of the ordinary ones, and Milo was able to receive his antitoxin and make a full recovery!! NOTE to travelling pet owners - prevention is far better than emergency treatment! Tick preventative medications and daily manual tick checks are a must if your pets are visiting costal regions.

11.01.2022 Just a reminder - to help us keep our clients and staff healthy and safe we ask that you.... * phone ahead to book a consultation * phone ahead for over the counter needs * hold off from grooming until restrictions are lifted * let us know if you can’t make your appointment... WE THANK YOU ALL IMMENSELY and are grateful for your love and care of your animals at this amazing time! See more

10.01.2022 ATTENTION MENDOORAN HORSE OWNERS! We are headed your way!!

10.01.2022 WARNING - Graphic images! Meet Sarge, usually a very excitable patient of ours. Sarge came into the clinic a couple of days ago for being off and not himself. Sarge had also developed vomiting and stopped eating over the past few days. X-rays showed Sarge had some distended intestines. An exploratory laparotomy (surgery) was performed to open Sarges abdomen and have a look at what the problem was. Dr. Carola found some very inflamed intestines and the cause of the problem - a small corn cob completely blocking Sarges small intestines!! The corn cob was removed and Sarge is nearly back to his happy go lucky self much to his owners relief! Please be aware of the risks of corn cob ingestion and dispose of them where your dogs cannot access them.

10.01.2022 AGGHhh!! We are having issues with our phones!!!! Please keep trying or call on 68472037 or our mobile 0427471129.

09.01.2022 Tick season is upon us! Nadine and the staff here at Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic have seen an increase in numbers of ticks on pets and livestock around the area and the odd one on ourselves ! We are fortunate enough not to have Paralysis ticks here in Central West NSW however precautions should be taken especially during the holiday season when traveling with pets. Clinical symptoms of paralysis tick envenomation start with a change in voice, weakening of the hind legs and... eventually leads to paralysis of all 4 limbs. The tick venom will also lead to respiratory system paralysis and result in death if left untreated. Please make sure you have given your furry friend a tick preventative prior to traveling to known Paralysis Tick areas and remember to carry out tick searches every day. For more information on the range of available products drop into the clinic or phone us on 6847 1129

09.01.2022 With harvest in full swing be sure to shut the gate so your horses cannot access grain spills or stores. Grain consumption can be very harmful to horses leading to diarrhoea, and potentially shock and death. If you’re horses do inadvertently consume even a moderate amount of grain it is recommended to administer veterinary treatment early so as to prevent severe disease. In the event of a mishap, remove horses from the grain source, withhold water and contact the clinic. 0268471129

09.01.2022 Parvo is raising its ugly head again in our surrounding communities. Let’s stop it before it hits Gilgandra. Make sure your mates vaccinations are up to date!

08.01.2022 No dog is safe from HEARTWORM. This map shows documented cases highlighting that we are detecting infection in dogs well away from the coast! Being spread by mosquitoes means it does not require dog to dog contact. Come in and speak to us about continuous 12- month protection today. Think12 www.think12.com.au

08.01.2022 Meet Yabby the incredible! He had been out working and returned with a slight squint to his left eye. When we examined him he had a mild but consistent mucopurulent (pus) discharge from his eye but the eye was open and clear and no changes were found on the cornea or internal eye structures. Under sedation we spotted a brown spot in the conjunctiva on the outside edge of the eyeball. We managed to pull out a 3cm long stick that had wedged itself down beside the eyeball and miraculously not caused any damage to the eye!! Yabby is much more comfortable and made a full recovery!

08.01.2022 Good luck Connor Whiteman with your interview for Vet at Wagga tomorrow!! Feels like you’ve been ready for years!!

06.01.2022 BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BAIT!! With mouse numbers increasing so to is our desire control them. We have been seeing numerous cases of inadvertent exposure of dogs to rat/mouse bait resulting in serious bleeding disorders that often require a blood transfusion. If your pet consumes rat bait in any form, owners should contact the clinic immediately for assistance in how to induce vomiting. Most pets will require medicating with the appropriate antidote and if treated early can avoi...d the need for a blood transfusion. Unmanaged rat bait poisoning can be lethal. Symptoms of rat bait poisoning are related to a poisoned animal’s inability to clot their blood. Animals will bleed at various locations including nose bleeds, under the skin, into their urine and digestive tract but most commonly into the lungs. This means you may not see them bleeding but they will be subdued and appear to have more effort to their breathing. Some will develop a moist cough. Please be very careful this summer and consider using traps. If baiting is necessary ensure dogs and cats cannot access the baits in any manner and check your stations regularly. See more

05.01.2022 February is all about MATTERS OF THE HEART Bring your beloved pooch or puss in for a free blood pressure check, heart murmur assessment and a complimentary HEARTWORM test*. Phone 68471129 for an appointment.

05.01.2022 A little reminder to Gilgandra townsfolk on the dangers of bat populations given our current residents in Hunter Park. Bats can carry 2 viruses that are deadly to people. Hendra virus can spread to horses and then to people. Bat Lyssavirus is transmitted directly from bat to person. Horse owners are reminded not to feed their animals under trees to limit possible spread via bat excrement. Now would also be an opportune time to consider vaccination of horses for Hendra. People should avoid handling bats unless experienced and if they do suffer a bat bite seek immediate medical attention.

01.01.2022 SHEEP PRODUCERS BEWARE We have been seeing in increase incidence in inhalational pneumonia presenting essentially as STOCK DEATHS following short period of listlessness and mild coughing. These cases are a result of combinations of the following.. * dust... * smoke * immune suppression from ongoing drought * acidosis (as most droughtfed stock are) * heat * reduced access to shade in lots * lack of reprieve from heat overnight (temps staying above 28) SO ESSENTIALLY DROUGHT!! Most cases will need antibiotic intervention to suspend/reduce losses. If you have concerns please call us on 68471129. GRAPHiC CONTENT PHOtOs
