23.01.2022 Complete newbies... Yep that’s right, until earlier this year, we were complete newbies when it came to growing a vege patch ourselves. It’s something I longed to do for so long, and it’s incredible how nostalgic the whole process has been. When I was a little girl, my Dad grew the most incredible vege patch in the paddock behind the old farmhouse. I can still remember the sound of the gate latches clicking as I opened the house yard gate. Dead ahead was the most amazing pep...per tree, complete with a treehouse my Dad made for me. I’d sit up there and watch Dad tend to his garden as the pepper tree branches gently swayed in the breeze making a whoosh whoosh sound. I can still feel the rough bark of the tree, and the smell of those leaves as I played endlessly during the warm balmy afternoons. My absolute favorite was rubbing the peppercorns in my palms and feeling them pop. Bees were always buzzing. Aside from that pepper tree and my very special treehouse, the flavor that came out of Dads garden is the thing that hits me now, when we eat our own home grown food. The same taste. That same feeling. During this year of being a newbie to vege growing, it amazes me what seems to be easy to grow, and what doesn’t grow at all. For me this season, dill has been easy. It’s now flowering and going to seed. Those yellow flowers are like fireworks against the wispy green leaves. And they are always covered in bugs...good bugs like ladybirds. If you, like us for so many years, are longing to grown your own food, do it! Be it in pots on your window sill, a small patch by your back door, wherever you can, plant that seed. Wait for it to pop up- it still gets me every time! The best part, you never know what nostalgia it might invoke. Perhaps memories of a friend, a grandmother, a dad, a younger version of you. #vegepatch #dill #dillflower #newbies #growyourownfood #justgiveitago #soilhealth #soilmatters #goodbugs #beneficialinsects #nostalgia #treehouse #regenerativeagriculture #limes #maryvalley

19.01.2022 4 0 Y E A R S... Celebrating 40 years of this guy. Our main man. Our hunter. Our protector. We met at Uni a hundred years ago, after a chemistry exam. In the pub at Forrest Hill. I can still remember the first smile that came my way. Let’s just say the chemistry wasn’t only reserved for that exam room! Fast forward 20 years and here we are celebrating a milestone. Happy birthday, we think you are wonderful images by @jessica_j_howard ... #birthdays #celebratinglife #fortyandfabulous #family #familyfarm #ourmainman #unidays

19.01.2022 Farmversery.... Exactly 12 years ago we bought this place. Our little slice of paradise in the Mary Valley, and boy were we full of pride and excitement. At the time we were working away in the Northern Territory, dreaming of one day moving here, but with no clue as to how. And truthfully, back then, we weren’t really bothered about that...the beauty of youth. 12 months later, after loads of research and umpteen conversations, we decided to plant a lime orchard. I can remem...ber the day well. It was a scorching hot spring day. I was sick as a dog, newly pregnant with our eldest, and trying to be helpful...but mostly I sat under the only established tree in the paddock, a beautiful gum. From there (whilst swallowing down the bile that kept creeping up) I watched Rory, his father George & cousin Jeremy plant all of our trees by hand. A mammoth task. Over the years we have learnt more than we could imagine- it comes with the territory. This journey of ours has taken us on such a ride. We started out with such a traditional mechanical/chemical mindset, and have come full circle now to an organic, regenerative, biological & restorative landscape mindset. We are always learning, which is one of our passions. But what gets us out of bed most days...watching and being actively involved in restoring our little slice of paradise, our landscape, our incredibly thriving ecosystem, reveling in the change of each season and living our farm life to the beat of this seasonal drum. #certifiedorganic #soilhealth #landscape #sustainable #biodiversity #whosyourfarmer #farmlife #lime #regenerativeagriculture #familytime #familyfarm #future #futureofagriculture #jessicahowardphotography
17.01.2022 P O P C O R N We are so darn excited about our home grown pop corn!! Back a few weeks ago we went into battle for corn- check back through our posts- and after drying it we finally popped it today. Smiles all round! The kids were practically in the saucepan as they waited to hear that first ‘pop’ and ‘ting’ that then turns into a fireworks show. There were squeals of delight. It tasted delicious, the right amount of puff and crunch, slightly disappearing after each bite, leaving me wanting more... #popcorn #homegrown #glassgemcorn #kitchengarden #colours #sobeautiful #sotasty #delicious #popcornandamovie #yes #more

14.01.2022 I absolutely love this photo. These two were very eager to help in the orchard today alongside our pickers! (Mainly chewing their ears off ) Their big brother was very busy helping out Daddy as well. 10.01.2022 What a fabulous welcome we received after such a journey getting here! 11 years after purchasing our little slice of heaven, we can finally call it home. Yesterday we packed up our life, thanks to our amazing friends who helped lift, pack, sort, feed, water and house us! We are ever grateful We will miss Blackwater, but we cannot wait to finally pursue our dreams!
10.01.2022 It takes a village... Whilst doing my weekly lime delivery today @kandangafarmstore I picked up a few supplies. Here in the Mary Valley & surrounds we are blessed to have so many small producers growing and creating the most amazing food. It really is an incredible feeling to personally know all of the farmers who have created the food my family eats. Victoria from @winslandparkharvest creates the most delicious Farmhouse Ferments & salad leaves, Michelle from @uglyduckfinef...oods saves produce that would otherwise be wasted and turns them into the most glorious fruit preserves (Her team was busy at it today in the KFS kitchen). Stuart & Megan from @foragefarms chooks produce the best eggs. Avocados from @johntidysorganics are a favorite in this house (we hang out for these all season!). @jeremiahscrust sourdough with @piggyinthemiddle_qld chorizo & salami and last but not least @kandangafarmstore very own K2 Beef sausages! All Celebrated here @kandangafarmstore (did you catch their feature in @abclandline on Sunday?) I must not forget to mention coffee made by Nic using @montvillecoffee it literally saves my life every week! #supportsmallbusiness #supportyourfarmers #familyfarm #certifiedorganic #freshproduce #maryvalley #visitgympieregion #supportregional #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming

08.01.2022 Dare to dream a little... Two years ago, I took a photo from this exact spot. At the time we were eagerly awaiting our farmhouse build to finish. A dream that was a decade in the making. Little did we know then, things were going to get a lot more frustrating (that’s putting it mildly). In the post that I wrote 2 years ago, I talked about future celebrations & dreaming that would one day happen on this very verandah. When times get tough, we put our heads down, work a little ...harder...and...dream. Because what’s life without dreaming? That delightful place you go to when things get hard. That little daydream. That little seed gets planted and you never now when it will happen. Next week. Next year. 2 years later. Some say we live our life exactly as we want it. Some say it’s fate. Some say it’s luck. I say dream...as you just never know when it will happen. Since finally moving into our farmhouse, we have had those celebrations. Be it a birthday party, a chaotic family lunch full of big hand gestures & very loud jibber jabber (which I absolutely wholeheartedly love, chaos and all), cousin sleepovers with children running wild and free...everywhere, friends pulling in to visit for a cuppa, a day, a few nights, farm tours, collaborations, so many conversations. Because at the end of the day, those moments are what makes it all worth it. #dreams #goals #goodthingscometothosewhowait #celebration #family #friends #farmhouse #verandah #views #maryvalley #soilhealth #regenerativefarming #certifiedorganic
08.01.2022 Who are we? We have a few new folks who have joined us on our journey recently, so I thought we’d let you know who we are. Now I could of chosen a photo of us all smiling sweetly for the camera...but...where’s the fun in that right? In fact, this photo actually captures us perfectly. There’s Lucy at the front, about to launch into some sort of elaborate crazy character...I think I caught her just in time before the photographer ran for the hills! Then there’s Jimmy, ever com...pliant (well, mostly- goes with being the eldest), and Hamish is never far behind his big brother, copying his every move. Then there is us, Rory & Amy...the duo behind it all. Working hard in our regenerative lime orchard, gearing up for the season to start. This is us! Fun fact about Rory..he has really white legs! Fun fact about Amy, she doesn’t! #keepingitreal #keepyoursenseofhumor #regenerativeagriculture #certifiedorganic #limes #limeorchard #landscape #family #workingtogether #workinghard #familyfarm #soilhealth #biodiversity #whosyourfarmer #maryvalley #jessicahowardphotography

07.01.2022 Happy Spring We love the change of each season and the different rhythms they bring to our farm. All the citrus trees are bursting with blossom, new fruit and the bees are in full force! 06.01.2022 Tree of life... Growing up in the bush meant every holiday we packed into the car, and drove ten hours to the coast. Both my parents were originally from the Tweed Coast, so my mum couldn’t wait to get home to the house she grew up in, named The Bungalow. We loved nothing more than to jump out of the car after such a long trip and run into the arms of Gran & Pop. The days that followed were magical. A mix of beach swims, picnics by the river and playing in the yard. Each vis...it, Gran & Pop would take each of us around the yard, pointing out the trees that were planted when we were born. We would find it so thrilling to know that those trees were exactly as old as we were. Right in the middle of the back yard was a huge tree of life. Life happened under this tree. More morning teas than you could count. Lunches. Afternoon teas. Gatherings under it to discuss the happenings in the street. Family discussions, family arguments, constant talking. Meeting and cuddling new babies for the first time. Bringing new boyfriends or girlfriends to meet the family. Celebrating life. Always with a cuppa. Always with a cake or slice. A glass of cordial. The simple things are what is remembered, and remain to be what grounds us in our daily routines now. This tree is still there, with life always happening under it. This week we finally managed to plant our very own tree of life in our yard. It’s been talked about for years. It’s only small now, but life will also happen under this tree. One day, it will be as big as this tree our children have climbed up in this first image, but perhaps it will be their children who will climb it. first image by @jessica_j_howard #treeoflife #memories #familyholiday #lifehappens #plantingtrees #familyfarm #soilhealth #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #maryvalley #whosyourfarmer #biofertilizer #biochar #mulch

05.01.2022 Today we were lucky enough to host a farm walk with like minded local farmers. The banter consisted of many things, but mostly of bugs- In all forms, be it microscopic soil dwellers, or tree and leaf inhabitants. Why? Because these little bugs are everything. Without them, life cannot successfully coexist. Today, we at Gilldora Grove are grateful for these moments of collaboration, of supporting each other, exchanging ideas, always reaching & searching to be better at what we do. 04.01.2022 #Scottburgers have been a hit on the menu at Kandanga Farm Store after a 45 year lay-off! In 1976, the Scott family of Piber (north of Roma, QLD) were in t...he midst of the cattle depression. Instead of taking record low prices for prime steers, the decision was made to go direct to the consumer. At that year’s local show, friends and relations were pulled in from afar for a one-off plunge into the hospitality industry. The $1 Scottburgers were a hit with several thousand sold over the 3-day show yielding returns on the steers 10x what they would have been sold to the abattoir for. Hand cut coleslaw and white bread rolls with a choice of sauces (tomato or BBQ) & onion with a slab of grass-finished prime Maranoa steak was the only option! These days chefs, an abundance of local food options and exposure to foodies living & visiting the Sunshine Coast, Noosa & Cooloola areas and day trippers from Brisbane demand more! All the ingredients for the modern version of the classic Scottburger can be found on the shelves at Kandanga Farm Store so come, try, buy: What goes into a truly great LOCAL BURGER. 1) Locally handmade ORGANIC sourdough bread rolls from Paula Jeremiah 2) Handmade aioli made with Station Creek Eggs & infused with local ORGANIC limes from Gilldora Grove. 3) A locally processed, perfectly seared K2 Organic Grassfed mince pattie. 4) Organic Barambah Organics cheddar is melted on top- (if we could get a local organic cheese supplier- that’d be great- but not yet!) 5) From 20 minutes away one way- Victoria’s Winsland Park Farmhouse Beet Relish is generously applied and topped with John Tidy's Organics leafy greens (from 10 minutes the other)! 6) Local Bush Relish from Local Chef Peter Wolfe from Cedar Creek Farm Bush Foods tops of this taste SENSATION! (Wedges & craft beer from Bargara Brewing Company extra - but they are worth it)! It’s come a long way, but come and Taste what a truly iconic burger is like this weekend!
