24.01.2022 Becoming a more patient leader I recently worked with a leader who was accused of being impatient. They never had the time nor the interest to listen to their team’s concerns. When the pressure was on, they’d talk at people rather than have a respectful conversation. They didn’t show empathy or demonstrate the emotional intelligence required to be an effective leader.... When it comes to leadership, could patience really be a virtue? Many employees are tired of uncertainty and the frequent demand to do more with less often causing tempers to flare and workplace dissatisfaction to rise. I get it it’s hard! But consider the impact of rushing your team through a discussion or not listening to feedback. Can you see how productivity might be hampered if people are reluctant to ask questions or speak up at all? Patience is easy to talk about, but it is extremely difficult to practice when we are under pressure. 23.01.2022 Did you do the VIA Strengths survey? I love to hear women say, "I am really good at..." and own it. Believe it! Yet so often our energy is divided at work and we lose sight of our strengths. Let me share an example: Think about what happens when someone receives their 360-diagnostic report. What is the first thing they review? The negative points of course - and who said them! ... They go straight to the areas of weakness and for the next ten years can recite that undesirable feedback and who said it. They neglect to see the other empowering comments which probably made up most of the report. The most successful business people I know keep their focus on their strengths and not their weaknesses. I am sure Jeff Bezos and Arianna Huffington have had glaring weaknesses, but they definitely did not achieve success by focusing on them. If your default is to see the deficiencies, then pause. 23.01.2022 How is Australia performing on workplace inclusion? @SBS commissioned a report on the economic benefits of improving social inclusion, and found while womens workforce participation has improved, a gap still remains. Australia has a gender pay gap of about 15%, which is similar to the average across OECD countries, a gap that has fallen only marginally since the mid-1970s. The report also indicated the average superannuation balances are 42% lower for women at retirement.... We still has a ways to go when it comes to closing the gap and fixing the issues associated with inclusion.

20.01.2022 Since the start of the pandemic, theres been a lot of media attention paid to female led-nations and their effectiveness in handling the COVID-19 crisis as opposed to their slower and markedly less successful male counterparts. Its interesting to reflect months on, that some of the countries recognised as having managed the crisis best include Germany, Taiwan, New Zealand, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Denmark all nations led by women. It would be easy to jump to the conc...lusion that women make better leaders than men, but thats not necessarily accurate nor indeed the point of this post. Diversity in thought and leadership is what counts. There are far fewer female-led countries in the world when compared to male-led. Just 10% in our sample of 194 countries have women as national leaders. Which meanswe still have a long way to go!

She is a long term fan of gender-based quotas and what they can do to address structural barriers to progress for women. People have mixed views on quotas, some believing its wrong, others that targets are better. But for Sam, she is resolute that quotas produce results. 11.01.2022 To say 2020 has been a year like no other, is no understatement. Yet, while the uncertainty created a significant amount of stress, it also opened the door to opportunity. The opportunity to think outside the box, the opportunity to be agile and to explore ideas we might not have otherwise considered. Rather than sitting back and waiting for the world to right itself, we tried new things, we stayed visible, we refined old ideas and took the time to focus on what was important....
