25.01.2022 Comforts of Home Hello All. Were into hibernation season which means our interior spaces should be meeting all the requirements for a cosy winter style and comfort! Everybody has their own idea of what makes a sofa or sectional lounge comfortable. Plus, your furniture needs to serve different functions and people of varying age and shape. However, there are certain guidelines everyone should follow to ensure the comfort of your family and guests. First, never offer anyone... over the age of sixteen a beanbag or similarly low seating option. There is no way to extract oneself from this arrangement without appearing inelegant. There are only two ways to do it: straddle beanbag and push yourself into an eye-wateringly grotesque squat from which you then rise, un-Venus like, to the soundtrack of your popping knee joints OR launching yourself off the side in an ungainly flip onto all fours from which you then walk your hands in a-la-toddler until your centre of gravity permits you to lift your upper body. Often accompanied by headrush. If you are thinking you would never have a beanbag in the house, you might still want to check the height of your existing seating. If you sit on a sofa with your feet flat on the floor and your knees are level with your chest then your seating is too low! Secondly, the cushions. Now I am a cushion connoisseur. They are the most effective and inexpensive way to change or add colour, style and pattern in a space. BUT there is such a thing as too many cushions. If someone sits down and their body is no longer visible, if they have to teeter uncertainly on the smartly piped edge of the base cushion, if their body is arched back like theyre undergoing medieval torture when they try to recline, if they actually have to move the cushions to sit comfortably then there are too many! Finally, sofa arms. I am very particular about the height and width of the arms on any sofa or chair. Richard has his own chair where the height of the arms act as a deterrent to any trespassers. He sits comfortably supported whereas I sit with elbows high and chicken-like due to our height differences. This is how you maintain a Dad only space. Additionally, if your elbows are resting at optimum height but the armrests are digging a channel into the tender underside of your lower arm, it is too thin. I like an arm that you could balance a cup of tea on but thats just me (not anyone else in the house they cant be trusted). Here is the beauty of ordering bespoke furniture you get exactly what you want. X Fiona Email Fiona at [email protected], ring on 0400 311 531 or PM here. See more

25.01.2022 Scared to Say Spring Hello Everyone In the two years I have been writing for Ginger Jar Blue on Facebook I have noticed a recurring phenomenon. You may be aware of it too. Im calling it the Seasonal Post Curse. If I write about Autumnal decorating, vibrant foliage and spicy warm colours, an uncharacteristic stretch of hot weather will occur. If I welcome Summer with open arms, endorsing outdoor living and rhapsodizing over vivid new fabric, a freak bout of chilly weather wi...ll sweep the country. Now I am faced with the fourth beautiful Spring day in a row and Im too scared to put pen to paper because of the curse! But its so hard. Theres fabric, theres furniture, theres fantastic lighting and there are the most heavenly paint palettes that fill me with pure joy. I will exercise caution and resist but in the meantime, I am bursting with enthusiasm for all the gorgeous ways you can improve your home this Spring. X Fiona Oh and photos dont count, right? 25.01.2022 GETTING IN TOUCH Apologies to anyone who has tried to email me or contact me by PM. The storms have knocked our internet around over the last four days. I can be reached on my mobile 0400 311 531 and maybe in the next five minutes as I inexplicably have a connection now! Cheers, Fiona

24.01.2022 Hello Everyone. We’re all feeling wobbly but I’m here for you! My remedy for banishing the Corona blues is a bit of escapism. A break from the news, the conjecture and the toilet paper deficit. I hereby present FANTASY INTERIORS AROUND THE WORLD *fanfare* Our first stop is this breathtaking Paris apartment. Adjectives fail me when it comes to this space! The chandeliers, the art, the sophistication and glamour of the colour palette! The drama of the double height ceiling pai...red with the intimacy and comfort of the seating. Then there’s the perfect pairing of period and contemporary and do I even have to rhapsodize over the view? The piano accordion is playing Non, Je ne Regrette Rien, I’ve a glass of Pol Roger in hand and I’m on that sofa gazing over the rooftops of Paris *wipes drool* As I seem to have gone from not-enough-hours-in-the-day to what-will-I-do-with-myself-today in the space of a week, I think some design voyeurism is the ticket. Stay tuned for more over the top commentary, more gorgeousness and more drool (just at my end you don’t have to) Sending much love to you all, Fiona See more

24.01.2022 A Quick Hello Then, Lets Go! Hi Guys. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder so Im assuming everyone adores me by now. Ive got so many ideas to share with you but its that time of year, so I need to get down to practicalities - the Trade Fairs are upon us! I am now taking orders for the trade fairs which begin in the last week of Feb, so youve got a couple of weeks to sort out what you need or what you just really, really want. It can be as simple as a pair of lamp...s or as complex as refurnishing your living room. All you need to do is get in touch and we can go from there. Some things to think about are: Is any of your furniture no longer comfortable or functional? Could your space benefit from adding lighting, flooring or art. Does your space lack character but you cant quite figure out what it needs? I love working with people to solve decorating dilemmas plus the savings from ordering through Ginger Jar Blue are considerable. Drop me a line at [email protected] send a PM or give me a call on 0400 311 531 for a chat. X Fiona See more

23.01.2022 Colour Rebel The world is full of rules, many of which we should adhere to. After all, ignoring the rules of the road could make you a murderer, not a rebel, but there are many other spurious rules that have been created to help us with personal choices. These are the ones you should scoff at. Today Im ostentatiously thumbing my nose at taboo colour combinations like blue and green should never be seen. I dont know where this adage came from but there is empirical proo...f that its not true. Just check out the gorgeous interior pictured. Like all things, its the choices we make that separates the sublime from the ridiculous. Those of you who have followed me for a while know that my Nannys house was a retina burning sea of early 70s orange and brown. Naturally I have an aversion but look at the contemporary way brown and orange have been used in the living/dining space pictured. There is also a rule about only using red and green for Christmas dcor yet by choosing the right tones, this combination can go from Santas workshop to chic. The stylish living space pictured is a great example. In the first house we lived in our painter told me I couldnt have lilac and sage in my bedroom because they didnt go together. Aside from the obnoxious mansplaining he was dead wrong. Its all about tone and balance like the gorgeous space pictured. If you have a colour combination that you love but arent sure how to incorporate it, dont be put off because I can make it work for you. Be a colour rebel! Call me on 0400 311 531, send a PM or email [email protected]. Now about that brown belt with black shoes x Fiona See more

22.01.2022 DRAMA QUEEN Alfred Hitchcock said, What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out. When life gets overwhelming, I crave an interval of dull bits to restore my sanity but never so when it comes to interiors. I am an avid Drama Queen. If you own a property with gasp-inducing architectural features you probably have the drama covered but for those of us with modest ceiling heights, standard windows and plastered walls there is always a way. Designing scenes for your home ...is a rewarding challenge. Youre creating visual delight for everyone in the space and what should a home be if not delightful? There are so many fabulous tools to use when making a space extraordinary; contrast, layering, colour & lighting, its not at all about having the amazing pendant, the designer sofa or the spectacular piece of art (although I would love an abundance of each) its about directing focus, highlighting and placement. Working with what you have is part of a designers job. Plus, youre probably so used to your stuff you cant visualise it any other way! For instance, all that hand-me-down artwork youve scattered around to avoid bare walls would have a gazillion times more impact if it was curated to one area. Or consider the impact of colour. If your beige sofa looks meh and theres no budget for a new one, all it takes is an injection of colour on the walls behind it to turn dull into delicious. Scared of colour? Layer it up with cushions and throws. Its 100% true - necessity is the mother of invention! In support of this theory Ive uploaded images that only rely on colour, placement and lighting to create theatre. X Fiona See more

22.01.2022 Hello Everyone! Yes, its been a long time. (Good god, the driving! I think I now qualify as a long-haul trucker) I have missed writing to you all but am willing to alienate everyone by bringing up Christmas. No! Not in a lets start getting ready way. Simply because its a deadline so many of us use for any improvements or changes we wish to make in our home. Weve all watched the TV shows where a team of tradies converge upon a property and 48 hours later a gleaming new sp...ace is revealed. It has custom joinery, bespoke upholstery, a floating oak floor and everything has been painted to the highest specifications. I have no idea why this is called Reality TV because it has no bearing on reality at all. Interior Design is not a laborious process, but it does require time management hence the unpopular mention of the C word in August. We all want our homes to perform their best for visiting family, entertaining friends and of course hosting a memorable Christmas for those you love most. I am now taking bookings for September so even if you dont have a clear idea of the scope of your project, give me a call, book in a consultation and well talk about all the possibilities for making your home sparkle this season. 22.01.2022 Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you all take time to revel in the sun, sea and slower pace of January. My New Years resolution is to realise I cant control everything, recognise people make mistakes and accept that, despite my best efforts, sometimes things dont follow a precise plan. Richard tells me that other people arent as obsessive as me weird! What I do have control over is how my home looks and feels and, after the frenetic activity of December, creating a se...nse of calm and order is paramount. The simplest way to regain control at home is to make sure everything is put away. Sounds basic I know but having everything in its place is a panacea for a lot of festive season ills. If you have children, they probably received a huge score of presents that are residing all over the house. Putting them away in the appropriate places will help establish a sense of back to normal in your home. All packaging and wrapping in the bin! If your recycling bin is too full of empty bottles to fit packaging and wrapping (not me a friend) then make sure it is all bundled up out of the way to go in the next garbage cycle. You may catch up around Easter. And most importantly take down your Christmas Decorations! All of them. There is always one house in the street with a motley string of lights, windblown and forlorn, subjugated by Huntsman and now beyond repair flapping pathetically in the Winter breeze. Dont be that house! xxx Fiona See more

22.01.2022 Well Hello Everyone. We are distant physically but together digitally! Installment 2 of FANTASY INTERIORS AROUND THE WORLD for your edification. I have travelled (but barely) from Paris to the gorgeous countryside where this lavish French Villa exudes style and luxury. I will say straight off the bat, my favourite element in these spaces is the artwork. I adore a fractured fairytale and the image of Marie Antoinette defaced by a splat of luxe gold is right up my alley; oblite...rated by her own wealth, yes? My favourite piece is the image of King Louis decked out in rapper bling. Can you see he also has a Louis Vuitton holdall? It’s a cheeky wink in a space that is so carefully curated. Another shot of punk is delivered via the reflective surfaces. Yes, there’s a totally covetable mirrored baby grand, sumptuous marble furnishings & fittings and all that glam gold yet the mirrored wall in the bedroom is warped and the dividing wall in the living space has an acetone burn. It’s these details that prevent this space from taking itself too seriously. Elegance with a twist! The lighting in this villa is amazing. The pieces themselves are to die for but have you noticed how the designer has paired every grouping of parallel lines with a circle? On the mantlepiece, on and behind the coffee table, in the dining room and in the bedroom it’s brilliant! There’s just so much to appreciate here the detail is stunning, but this space also looks cosy and relaxing. Bloody stylish French people being chic all the time! *grumble grumble* If you have the means to look at this space on a PC rather than you’re phone it’s worth it! xxxxx Fiona See more

22.01.2022 Its a Wrap Christmas Decorations are up so my next seasonal task is wrapping. My love of beautiful paper products is second only to my love of fabric plus Im a total cardoholic, so I take great pleasure in making all my gifts look sensational. After all they will sit in my living room for a month as decorative objects, just as much as any other item placed around your home. I have a couple of paper crushes but every year my Christmas wrapping comes from Inky Co. https://www....inkyco.com.au Delicious designs for all occasions but particularly at Christmas they offer such an incredible range of colour and style, you are sure to find something that makes your heart skip a beat. Inky Co are an Australian company who design and make their paper in Melbourne using sustainable plantation forest stock. Bespoke letterpress http://www.bespokepress.com.au print the old-fashioned way from their antique cast iron machines. They operate out of Bowral where the talented team of graphic designers and illustrators create enchanting wrapping and cards that will delight your sense of whimsy. If you are feeling really creative and you have the time you can create your own wrapping at Environmental Printing http://www.environmentalprinting.com.au You can have your design printed on 100% recycled paper stocks using vegetable based inks. I believe its important to support Australian craftspeople who share their talent with care and love, create in Australia by hand and are environmentally responsible. So many people tell me they dislike mass production and lament the way everything is manufactured offshore so if you feel that way, support Australian businesses! Additionally you wont find more beautiful products anywhere in the world. X See more

22.01.2022 Whats my Scene? As an Interior Designer I work through a lot of dilemmas but the one that faces a lot of my clients involves the agony of choice. It usually starts with a picture that catches the eye, which feeds a Pinterest addiction and turns into a full-blown predicament because they love EVERYTHING! The what style should I chose? question has a very simple answer dont. Your house doesnt have to comply with an established aesthetic, especially if you appreciate ele...ments from many eras and styles of design. The trick is to balance out disparate items by running a common thread through the space. This could be form and shape, colour and pattern, texture and materials, just make sure youre living with what you love. Additionally, if you do find yourself wondering where your interior style lies, I also ask the question what do you dislike?. A process of elimination can be just as successful as identifying elements you love. You may adore a lux theme, but you dislike marble. Perhaps you love coastal style, but your dog eats everything made from a natural fibre. Maybe you admire the Hamptons look but cant stand a coffee table covered with books on the subject and phalaenopsis orchids growing out of giant oyster shells (yes, the last example was suspiciously specific). Determining what not to include can make all the difference. xxx Fiona See more

21.01.2022 Christmas Countdown Did anyone elses life go from a just manageable 8 to a screaming 10 over the last month? Nevertheless, I love this time of year and, as todays been my first non-scheduled day since October, Ive used the time to clear, clean and prepare the house for a most treasured event decorating for Christmas. Although time is scarce at present, I highly recommend a ruthless scrub and purge before you embark on any seasonal decorating. For me this means getting ...out the alien and seldom used attachments that are part of my vacuum, cleaning the windows, and washing my glassware. I dont resent the latter as Im a self-identified glass addict and I adore creating seasonal vignettes with cloches, hurricanes and lanterns. Plus, I love making a bar for Christmas entertaining. The other two chores I complete with a palpable resentment. Yes, I recognise the value of being able to see out of windows and yes, Im glad theres no longer a field of popcorn kernels and lolly wrappers under the sofa in the TV room (Halloween sleepover) but really, its horrible work. Of course, the ickyness reaches its zenith when its time to combine the vacuuming and the window cleaning and you discover the blowfly graveyard in the window tracks. Nnnyahh! However, now Im finished Im radiating a smug aura of accomplishment, so I guess it was worth it. Best of all I have a clean and organised canvas ready for Sunday when I will be indulging my love of sparkle, glitter and all things Christmassy. x Fiona See more

21.01.2022 FRANCOPHILE French decor has been imitated all over the world. From the rustic ambiance of a Provenale farm house to the effortless chic of a Maison de Ville to the elegance of a Chateau and even the spectacular halls of Versailles. One of my favourite assignments when I was at Design College was reinterpreting Louis the 14th style for a contemporary space. Im not imagining that kind of project is going to come along every year but many of my clients do admire and wish to i...ncorporate French style in their homes. The thing about French style is, its impossible to pin down: reverence for the historic, the heirloom and the characterful elements in a home is matched by the embrace of the cutting edge, the super chic and the contemporary. A masterful vignette looks like the perfect composition yet somehow seems so nonchalant and uncontrived. An artful mix of genres and styles has an unforced appeal that epitomizes skill yet looks organic in its environment. Well, I could go on, but I wont. I am the owner of a dozen volumes on French Interior Style and know that better writers than me cant describe it! Ill have to fall back on the old Je ne sais quoi which translates as I know not what and could be followed by the plain, but true, I know it when I see it. And of course it helps to have amazing architecture!!! French style shouldnt be copied (have you been paying attention? Thats the whole point!) but ingenuous eclecticism, now that can be created. Its personal, its unique and its how a home can be designed around an authentic idea. xxx Fiona Contact Ginger Jar Blue Interior Design and Decoration on 0400311531, email [email protected] or PM here. 20.01.2022 An Ode to Blue & White I was asked the other day if all the interiors I design are blue. Ginger Jar Blue I get it. The answer is a resounding no! Then I thought, I do design a lot of them. So many of my clients gravitate towards blue, usually partnered by its BFF, white. This combination never dates and has countless applications in classic and contemporary style. My favourite way to apply blue and white is (no surprise) with fabric. Fabric is a design hero, rescuing rooms... from mediocrity and creating a completely bespoke space. Then of course the paint choices are in the tens of thousands! Sophisticated navy, classic cobalt, dreamy duck-egg or cheerful cornflower: paired with a crisp white youre onto a winner. There are a couple of pitfalls to be wary of when decorating with blue and white, primarily creating a space thats completely cookie cutter. Above anything your home should be personal! The other error I often see are spaces that are flat. Yes, blue and white are gorgeous but It needs layers. Stone, wood and wicker are great foils or go glam with silver, pewter, gold, copper or bronze. Add texture with soft furnishings and flooring and dont forget natural elements like plants or flowers for a pop of colour. An unexpected piece of art can lift a scheme and theres always the grounding power of black to hold it all together. If you are a Blue & White devotee but not sure how to make your space unique give me a call on 0400 311 531 send me an email [email protected] or drop me PM anytime. xxx See more

20.01.2022 Relaxed Style The Melbourne Trade fairs ran this week so I jetted down, stayed at The Langham and checked out the new goodies in between spa treatments, dining at Melbournes laneway restaurants and a solid nine hours of sleep in my cloud-like hotel bed. Oh, I didnt? It only happened in my head? Well. There are lots of lovely things to see with Summer 19/20 ranges debuting, even if they were viewed via computer screen. The suppliers I appreciated the most were those who su...ccessfully mixed their materials; velvets paired with worn leather; industrial steel softened by rattan; contemporary metallic lighting partnered with roughly hewn timbers. It supports my theory that the interior of your home should be personal and relaxed. It also steers a space away from predictability which is a pet peeve of mine! Creating a relaxed interior isnt about choosing items that are exclusively squashy and stain-resistant. Its about filling a space with pieces that feel inviting, bring you pleasure and make your home a comfortable place to spend time in. Dont know where to start? Give me a call on 0400 311 531 shoot me an email at [email protected] or PM here. xxx Fiona See more

20.01.2022 Ginger Jar Blue Interior Design for 2020 First a monumental thank you to everyone who follows Ginger Jar Blue, likes, shares, reads and comments on my posts and passes on recommendations. Its sincerely appreciated and you are all fabulous humans! I just wanted to let everyone know that bookings for 2019 are now closed. I put 110% into any project I work on, big or small, and if I cannot allocate enough time to do my best work, I have to turn it down. Appologies to anyone w...ho has contacted me for pre-Christmas work. I value your custom and hope you can wait until the new year when I can turn all my attention to making your home be the most wonderful place for you to live! 19.01.2022 GINGER JAR BLUE 2020 Hello Everyone! I’d like to wish you all a warm welcome to Ginger Jar Blue 2020. The year will be starting with a bang as the Sydney Trade Fairs kick-off at the end of this month. I will be checking out all the latest and greatest design offerings, buying for current clients and product sourcing for those of you in the market for a particular item(s) to make your space sing. I’ll be posting information about product sourcing this week so look out for det...ails on how I can help you find that special piece for your home. For info call me on 0400 311 531, email [email protected] or PM here. I’ll also be posting about bespoke furniture and how it can transform your home because it’s never too early to start thinking about seasonal transformation! The last couple of months have been exceptionally hard particularly for those who have lost a home. If you are wondering how you can help, aside from supporting our exceptional emergency and rescue services, please allow me to suggest supporting local business. Having your home under constant threat is hard enough without the added stress of wondering how your business will survive. Areas like the Blue Mountains that rely on tourism are suffering greatly and the knock-on effect is terrible. An hour or so in the car is a small price to pay for rallying around communities who continue to be affected by the fires long after they have been put out. Fantastic shopping, gorgeous cafes, fabulous tours and exciting experiences all need your help! You’ll have a brilliant time AND your halo will be extra shiny! X Fiona See more

19.01.2022 Winter Essentials Its all happened in our house over the last ten days; a broken foot, a proper case of influenza and a displaced back although the latter was self-inflicted. (harbour cruise + whiskey + dancefloor) Being the only able-bodied member of the household doesnt leave a lot of time for interior faffage (my favourite pastime) but I need to get a wriggle on as winter is officially here. I love winter, mainly because I love contrast in all things. There is a special ...joy in being at home when it is diabolically cold outside. (2 degrees on Thursday!) Here are a few of my favourite essentials for Winter Interiors. THROWS I love throws but I dont like feeling stuffy. You will probably have a primary heat source inside so you wont need to smother your bod as well. A cotton or loose wool throw lets your skin breathe but keeps you super snug. And the gorgeous, gorgeous designs! A neutral is just too boring. CANDLES & FAIRY LIGHTS Its hard to appreciate the cosy glow of candlelight when its a blazing 35 degrees or the petite buds of fairy lights when its still light at 9pm. Candles come into their own in winter and make interiors sparkle. TRAYS I rarely meet a tray I dont like but in winter I use them functionally as well as decoratively. Chances are youll be lucky enough to have some time at home to just be: watching a movie, playing a board game, reading a magazine, getting stuck into a good book. Youll need a tray for supplies snacks, drinks, tissues, etc. Chances also are that someone, pet or child, is going to spill. If its on a tray at least you dont have to worry about hot chocolate in the rug. Snuggle up and enjoy! x Fiona See more

18.01.2022 Colour Me Happy When I say I adore colour I always feel I must add the following disclaimer: Not a riot of colour, not rainbows and lollipops nor any saturated combinations inspired by Mondrian or a long daycare centre. I am not going to treat your house like an interior shot of Moulin Rouge, Ruthless People or Jeannie the Genies bottle. Colour gives a space harmony and ambience and can be as subtle as you need. Phew! For those of you who would like to challenge their chrom...ophobia, there are endless ways to introduce colour to a space without it becoming overwhelming or involve wading through a sea of pastels. Of course the easiest ways to apply colour is through art. Whether its a single piece or a gallery wall, you can let the image shine against a bank of neutrals. The same with flooring. A rug can lift a space without dominating a room. Im not a fan of stark white interiors with one item in a hue of retina burning intensity. Its all about balance. If you love a single shot of sunny yellow, make sure its accompanied by a foundation that will support its strength like the interior pictured. The bright colour is balanced by the charcoal, ivory and grey palette. I think the lounge room combination pictured is genius! The caramel is balancing out the bottle green to perfection. Warm wood also tones down shots of sapphire in the pictured kitchen. The classic blue and white pairing is complimented by the brass light fittings. If youre after a burst of colour that wont break the bank you cannot go past flowers. Beautiful blooms will bring a lovely lift of colour to any space. And you can change your palette according to your mood, the weather or whatever! x Fiona See more

18.01.2022 Sofa Style: Its All in the Details Have you ever seen a sofa or chair so stunning its stopped you in your tracks? Youve never seen anything like it and chances are you never will because that unique combination of colour, texture and pattern is the result of a collaboration with a designer. Furniture design is not just about gorgeous fabric. Considering where and when this piece will be used and, most importantly how it will be used, enhances a space functionally and aesth...etically. Plus, the dimensions of a sofa will contribute to your comfort just as much as the quality of the cushioning and support. THEN its time to wallow in the beautiful fabrics! Mixing fabrics to create the look you want is such a creative joy. Add in the delight of designing a delicious array of scatter cushions and its nirvana for this fabric addict. Details like hardware, trimming, piping, buttoning and studding should never be overlooked. Whether you like your seating with a traditional skirt, a contemporary chrome leg or an industrial castor, specific design choices are what elevates a bespoke piece of furniture from average to awesome. For more info on bespoke soft furnishings drop me a PM, call 0400311 531 or email me at [email protected] X Fiona

18.01.2022 Oscars Edition I love a great movie and a great movie shot in a great house is double the joy. In honour of the Oscars Im looking at movies with swoonworthy homes that make me want to move, redecorate or renovate poste haste. I have also set myself the goal of not mentioning a single Nancy Meyers movie because its just too easy! So, without further ado, the Oscar goes to (drumroll) 1. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. This gorgeous movie has a lot to drool over visually the town of... Crema, Lake Garda, the streets of Bergamo, Armie Hammer - but its the to-die-for Italian villa where the principal characters live that gets my heart racing. The ceilings! The fireplaces! The art! The faded aristocratic splendor of the furnishings and collectables. Its so divine I cant stand it. Also, if you dont weep at the end of this movie, you have no heart. 2. LOVE ACTUALLY. We all love Love Actually, and Ive had many arguments over which storyline is best. The cool London townhouse where Liam Neeson lives makes a strong case for the Daniel/Sam thread. Eclectic contemporary dcor and architectural features like cut outs and mezzanines make this home one Id love to live in. Do we all agree that Laura Linney should just NOT answer her phone!!! 3. YOUVE GOT MAIL. The brownstone apartment where Meg Ryan lives in so charming, I want to move in now! It is so comfortable and cosy and loveable that I like to imagine Tome Hanks left his huge millionaires apartment and moved in with her here. 4. THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY. Yes, were back in Italy so no surprises where I want to retire to. A lot of the appeal of this house is the amazing view but the courtyard is where I could happily end my days. The performances in this film are brilliant but subconsciously its the houses that make me love it so much. 5. PADDINGTON. Delightful and playful, the interior of the Browns house in London is as adorable as Paddington himself. Colour plays a key roll here, the gallery hallway is fabulous, and the wallpaper and upholstery are scrumptious but its the cherry tree mural in the stairwell that got me. Is there a movie set that you want to move in to? Feel free to post your favourites! X Fiona See more

15.01.2022 Hide & Seek We all have things that might not adhere aesthetically to a carefully curated space. Board games, half a bottle of cherry advocaat, craft supplies and possibly the tawdriest item to ever grace a coffee table the photo album. (If you are old enough to have your childhood pics in an album you will be familiar with the crude, soft focus, brown-and-yellow-centric photography that used to adorn the photo album cover). My point is there are some things you need at han...d (not the cherry advocaat obviously) but also need to hide. May I suggest you invest in a cabinet. In the past Ive found storage (as opposed to display) cabinets to be, uh, lacking in the looks department but Im pleased to announce the cabinet has had an extremely stylish resurgence. The new cabinets are beautiful, free standing pieces, easier to move around than a sideboard or armoire and perfect for creating a stunning vignette. Most have shelves or drawers, and some have accessories for turning the space into a drinks cabinet. Ive posted all the ones I liked at the recent Trade Fair so give me a bell, 0400 311 531 send a PM or just post if you have an enquiry. They are all POA as I will have to factor in delivery cost to your location! I also cant help but note all the things we usually want to hide belong to other members of the household. I have had Harry, Ron & Hermione staring at me from the front of Harry Potter Cluedo since Christmas. Also, the cherry advocaat has crystalized around the cap into an icky mess. Time to throw it away? X Fiona See more

15.01.2022 Tablescaping When Im not absorbed with all matters dcor, Im indulging my (healthy! nothing to see here) obsession with gorgeous tablescapes. Anyone can set the table but putting together a tablescape is an art in itself. Im not referring to a Downtown Abbey-esque setting that adheres to formal rules or simply laying out matching napkins and tablecloth nothing wrong with that! but a composition of elements that create a beautiful little world where family and friends ...can escape care and enjoy the simple joy of food, drink and good company. Your tablescape may include cut greenery from the backyard or a spectacular florists arrangement, to-die-for hand embroidered table linens or an inexpensive swathe of cheesecloth, a dazzling array of crystal or, oh you get it! It can be humble or heroic or an intriguing mix of both. What matters is the design or, to put it bluntly using one of my favourite Blackadder quotes: Its not what youve got, its where you stick it. True of all situations, no? Before you set off to create an oasis of table loveliness this weekend, my primary piece of advice is to first decide how you are going to serve the meal. I spent one Easter morning slowly building a fairy tale world of bunnies and butterflies gambolling happily in an Enid Blyton inspired enchanted wood which my family duly oohed and aahed over. Unfortunately, this magical habitat was rudely dissembled when we realised that the huge platters of food Id prepared couldnt fit on the table. If youre going big, then prepare a buffet on the kitchen island, sideboard or console and let guests serve themselves. I love a table filled with platters of food for its aesthetic and practical benefits so when I want to go all out, yet leave room for food and drink, I go up! The illuminations above your dining area are prime decorating real estate. Florists wire, ribbon and fishing line are all your friends here. Finally, we all love candles but use them judiciously. If your guests are going to cauterize their forearm every time they reach for the salad or take a slug of vino your placement needs rethinking. Now eat, drink and be merry! x Fiona See more

15.01.2022 Outdoor Fabric When you are refreshing your outdoor room (you are, arent you? Its finally warm!!) selecting fabric is a good way to start. The variety of pattern and colour available is astonishing, a far cry from ten years ago when you could select from plain or stripe (I still love a smart stripe). Plus, they no longer feel like cardboard even though the protecting properties are greatly enhanced. The newest range of outdoor fabrics arent just coated with a water resista...nt or a mould resistant agent - they have outdoor performing properties woven into the fibre. This includes moisture, stain and fade resistance and anti-mildew and anti-mould solutions. There are also marine grade fabrics that are fully waterproof handy for pieces that will be used by soaking wet bods straight from the water. You should always have items made with outdoor fabric prepared by a professional. They will use the correct thread and stitch to ensure any upholstery remains as durable as the fabric itself. I have had the same fabric on my outdoor furniture for eight years now and its still going strong because my upholsterer knows how to work with it. For more info on reupholstering your tired outdoor furniture, give me a bell on 0400 311 531, email [email protected] or send a PM X Fiona See more

14.01.2022 Spring Optimism Well, if you read last weeks post you will be aware the Seasonal Post Curse kicked into gear causing a low-grade hurricane. Midday temp on Saturday in Leura? 4 degrees. Wind chill factor minus a gazillion. Im just sayin But dont despair because the sunny days are coming. However you think of Spring a fresh start, rebirth and renewal, beginning of the diet it uplifts our spirits because it imparts optimism. Its not just the welcome cheerfulness of a wa...rm day, its positivity, possibility and growth. In fact a study by the University of Michigan linked spending 30 minutes or more in sunny Spring weather to higher mood and better memory. The same study found that Spring weather isnt just a mood booster, it can change the way people think. Researchers found that enjoying Spring weather broadened participants minds leaving them open to new information and creative thoughts. So your mission this weekend is to take some time to enjoy the weather, open your mind to new thoughts and creativeness and then call me for an interior consult to put said fresh thinking to work! xxx Fiona call Fiona at Ginger Jar Blue on 0400 311 531, email at [email protected] or PM here. 13.01.2022 An Old World Christmas I take so much delight in creating everything around a theme at Christmas time. Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to pick up some ornate vintage gilt frames from an antique shop for a song. I thought theyd look beautiful paired with accessories in deep garnet and a spark was lit! A pair of baroque gold candlesticks, a few gilded goblets, a gold fan that was my Nannys and a collection of literary classics, bound in red with gilt embossing, have a...ll been gathered from around the house. I added opulent faux hydrangeas in a velvety blood red to provide more colour et voila! Its an Old World Christmas (please note the absence of an E at the end of these words theres never an excuse). To transfer this theme to a tablescape for Christmas lunch, Ill use a black tablecloth to offset my gold dinnerware and glassware, lots of candles in various vessels and masses of deep red roses, ranunculus and Vanda orchids for the seasonal garnish of garnet. Drawing inspiration from the Dutch Masters, Ill also use fruit; red grapes, pomegranates and plums. Ill create levels with more books, compotes and pedestals and then add sparkle with a few carefully placed baubles. Its not going to be stiff and formal, but I am going for dramatic, glamorous and moody! Have you thought about how youre doing Christmas Day yet? Planning is half the fun! xxx Fiona See more

12.01.2022 GINGER JAR BLUE 2020 Hello Everyone! Id like to wish you all a warm welcome to Ginger Jar Blue 2020. The year will be starting with a bang as the Sydney Trade Fairs kick-off at the end of this month. I will be checking out all the latest and greatest design offerings, buying for current clients and product sourcing for those of you in the market for a particular item(s) to make your space sing. Ill be posting information about product sourcing this week so look out for det...ails on how I can help you find that special piece for your home. For info call me on 0400 311 531, email [email protected] or PM here. Ill also be posting about bespoke furniture and how it can transform your home because its never too early to start thinking about seasonal transformation! Youll have a brilliant time AND your halo will be extra shiny! X Fiona See more

11.01.2022 New Stories I know a lot of us have been, once again, facing the possibility of losing our homes as bushfire ravages so much of our country. Yesterday we packed a bag each, made sure we had the dog carrier ready and went over our bushfire plan. Then Richard asked me what I wanted to pack from the house. Hmmmm.. I adore my home and the things in it. Its our castle that sustains us through lifes dramas, holds our most joyous occasions and gives us a sanctuary to relax, creat...e, learn, unplug, develop, discover and simply be who we are. Everything Ive chosen in my home is part of a world that Ive created to envelop my family. Whether its functional, decorative, or just something that spoke to me, its there because I felt it was part of our story. I would be absolutely devastated if we lost our story. So what did I pack from the house? Nothing. If we lost this house and all the things in it I cherish, wed start again like so many people have had to do. It would be devastating, difficult, frustrating and overwhelming but forward wed go. Ive seen a lot of you do it with so much good humour, fortitude and grace. Everyone please stay safe now and through the hot weather to come. The most important part of any story are the characters in it. Lots of Love Fiona See more

10.01.2022 Black Completes Me If you asked me what is the one thing everyone needs my answer would be prompt: love. If you were to ask me the one thing that every room needs my answer would be prompt: a touch of black. Every space needs something black. To paraphrase Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, it completes me. Ah, in design terms that is. I can pull out all my designer-y language and tell you how its grounding, how it adds depth, how it sharpens both colours and neutrals how it provi...des contrast, how it supports disparate elements and so on and blah. I doubt youve thought about or noticed it but those touches of black most of us have in our lighting, furniture and accessories are what resolves a space. Maybe its because black is so invisible that its so effective. Take a look at the blue & white space pictured. Its calm, airy and relaxed. Now try and picture the same space without the frames, fireplace and stripe in the rug & throw. Its not right because these touches of black are anchoring the entire scheme. In some cases, its obvious that black is doing the heavy lifting. In the neutral living space pictured, the inclusion of black lets the white elements sing. Same with the pale seating area pictured, black defines a space that is in danger of flying away. Pastel spaces are particularly saved by elements in black. Here, a pretty bedroom is grounded with a subtle black graphic and a charcoal cushion. A stronger presence is presented in another pastel bedroom where the delicate colour combination still shines. Black as a feature is another story altogether but its the subtle inclusion of black that is the unsung hero of a successful space. It had me at hello. X Fiona See more

09.01.2022 Turn Off the World We all need to turn off the world occasionally. After all, taking time for ourselves enables us to handle the moments when lack of time is an issue. For me, turning off means disappearing into a great book. For this, I highly recommend a Reading Nook. Few of us have the luxury of several living areas, were sharing space constantly. Creating a custom-built zone for reading, relaxing or dreaming is a fabulous way to disconnect in an open-plan space. It sen...ds the message you are secluded but not segregated from the household and the design potential is what dreams are made of! Small spaces can be jewel boxes of colour, an oasis of calm, blend into the existing dcor or have a distinctive style all their own. Materials and finishes, colour and pattern, gorgeous lighting, shape and form create endless possibilities. Comfort is key so ergonomic considerations back & neck support, ample room to stretch or curl up, ease of entry and exit plus practical considerations adequate light to read by, thermal control, room for a cup of tea should be addressed as well as issues of style. Then you truly have a sanctuary to enjoy! xxx Fiona For more on creating a reading nook in your home call Fiona on 0400 311 531 email at [email protected] or PM here. See more

08.01.2022 Dream a Little Dream When I post I try to keep a financial perspective recommending pieces I love. After all, there are so many other avenues to view elite furniture design, exclusive lighting and award-winning architecture. Although I am often to be found drooling over a phenomenal piece of art, an original sandstone homestead or a killer light installation, my attitude is appreciation not envy. Dreaming doesnt indicate dissatisfaction Its simply letting your imagination... run wild. When I was at College the fantasy of designing with an unlimited budget was often discussed. We deliberated over just because you CAN doesnt mean you SHOULD (should a private individual be able to nail up Starry Night above her toilet?) agreed on money doesnt buy taste (three words Trump Tower Penthouse) and argued about the merit in designing for an architecturally impressive space over making a standard room extraordinary through skill and artistry. If you could Imagine your ultimate room, any room of the house do you know what youd want? Its an enjoyable daydream but defining limits are important in our lives especially in our homes where a lack of glass object may represent the joy of a new baby. I look at interior design every day, partly for work and mostly for love but I will quote the admirable Kevin Mc Cloud (Grand Designs if youre not familiar) when asked of all the wonderful homes hes seen, which one would he like to live in. His answer none of them, because theyre not mine. X Fiona See more

08.01.2022 Trade Fair Previews Hi Everyone. Two weeks to the Trade Fairs so Ive been looking through the index of vendors and checking out whats on offer. This includes fabulous new products from some of my favourite suppliers and discovering some new companies with exciting new designs. Ive included a few pictures of products Im eager to view, but I never make up my mind until Im standing in front of it. Colour, texture and quality can only be assessed in person. First up is the K...avi Rug. Its a rug and pad system thats machine washable, stain resistant and hypoallergenic. Perfect for a house full of kids and pets. Its pictured here in rose gold. Next is the Norba Sofa which Im hoping feels as luxurious as it looks. I LOVE button back sofas and I LOVE teal velvet, so fingers crossed. I thought these felt cushions called Nomad Grid were adorable. They bring a cool, graphic element to a simple arrangement. Great for a tween/teen bedroom. The Distant Waters print is from a new range. Prints are one of the riskiest purchases you can make online as the quality, or lack thereof is often undetectable in a digital image. Hopefully these will be fabulous and find there way to someones space. Drop me a line at [email protected] send a PM or give me a call on 0400 311 531 if youd like to know more about finding beautiful products through Ginger Jar Blue. X Fiona See more

08.01.2022 BEDGASM (noun) the feeling of euphoria when climbing into bed at the end of a long day. Were all aware of this feeling yes? And sometimes you can achieve double the, uh satisfaction, if your bedroom is looking gorgeous. If food can be plated up so the first bite is with the eye then surely design in a bedroom can be said to have the same effect. If your bed looks inviting, the room is comfortable, cosy and uncluttered and youre enveloped by colours, textures and material...s that soothe your soul, surely a lovely kip will follow. Whatever type of mattress/base you prefer I would always recommend choosing a bed with a headboard or including a bolt-on bedhead for a great aesthetic foundation. I like upholstered headboards for the inclusion of fabulous fabric. Designing a bespoke backboard is one of (my) lifes greatest pleasures. Layering your bedding not only gives you great thermal control but adds a sense of luxury and provides a perfect opportunity to set a scene with colour, texture or pattern. I am a lover of crisp, pure white bedding (hmmm catholic upbringing anyone?) and then I bring in tactile throws and plump pillows. Once youre snuggled in theres nothing worse than having to get up to turn off a light, get a glass of water or find your book so a side table/drawer/cabinet is crucial as is at hand lighting. Basics like the right mattress and good quality linens are a given. Light and temperature control are essential and even scent can contribute to a good nights sleep. You can read all about circadian rhythms, Feng-Shui, colour harmony and other elements that contribute to a restful sleep zone at sites like www.sleep.org. 07.01.2022 What Can I Find for You? The 2020 Trade Fair is fast approaching which means I am creating lists and tables ready to hunt out unique and exciting new items to fit my clients taste, needs and budget. Product Sourcing is a valuable design service many people utilise to save time, money and occasionally, their sanity. Let me set the scene: Youve been trawling through the home centre with reluctant partner and/or children in tow. The atmosphere of discontent is palpable and risi...ng. You still havent found a dining table in the style or price range you desire. The bickering/whining/hostilities commence. You look at each other and say, should we just get the one from the last shop? And you do. And youre paying $2000 for something you dont love. Heres another one. Youve found a bookcase/table/sideboard that you like but when its sitting in your home it doesnt create the same impact it had in the showroom. You realize the piece, while attractive, was made fabulous by the carefully curated and styled items on its surface or shelves. You loved the rustic industrial theme of the vignette, but you dont know how to recreate the scene for your space. Its where a designer comes in! Hiring a designer to product source is as simple as describing your needs, budget and preferred style. This could be a big item: dining table, armoire etc. or a small item: lighting, art, flooring etc. I usually find three examples of each item a client requires to fulfill their brief. You choose, I order, its delivered, done. Send me an email or call me on 0400 311 531 to discuss what I might find for you at the 2020 trade show. X Fiona See more

07.01.2022 The Shape of Things to Come This morning I was contemplating shape. I wont plot the segue that leads to my musings as it may lead to involuntary committal, but I ended up at shape. Shape, form, build, whatever you like to call it, plays a significant role in what we find aesthetically pleasing. In a study, Johns Hopkins University reported that test subjects shown 200 imagesof rooms with round columns and oval ottomans and others with boxy couches and coffee tableswere mu...ch more likely to call the former beautiful than the latter. Brain scans taken while these participants were evaluating the interior designs showed that rounded decor prompted significantly more brain activity. Results found the brain may have evolved to process information about spherical shapes in order to guide survival behaviors while in contrast, the brain may devote less processing to sharp curvature, jagged forms, which tend to be inorganic and thus less important. This does not mean that an appreciation of right angles makes you a moron! Another study showed that the straight lines and angles of squares and rectangles give a sense of reliability and security. People strongly associate these shapes with shelter, trust and authority. You may not always notice what shapes you find aesthetically pleasing. I doubt youve ever looked at your kitchen island and thought, I feel safe with this multi-angled, many surfaced form but it may have had something to do with it. Is this why I dont like kidney-shaped pools? Because I dont trust them not to drown my children? I dont know! But its what I was thinking this morning xx Fiona See more

06.01.2022 Sunny Days March is often the best time to enjoy a sunny Sunday. The calendar is not crammed with events, weekly routines feel comforting rather than stale and we sometimes come face to face with that rare occurrence: unscheduled time. Its these elusive opportunities that really give an insight into how well your home is working for you. If you cant find a place to play a boardgame with the kids/read your book in peace/share a sunny space with your S.O and a glass of vino,... then maybe you need to look at your home with fresh eyes. A renovation after Christmas and January holidays is generally out for most of us so thoughtful layouts, clever styling and re-working what you already have are perfect solutions to enjoy bright sunshiny days. And the thing about changing your floorplan, swapping over accessories and re-purposing some furniture? Its not permanent! If it doesnt work when the weather turns, you can always move it back. Youll have the satisfaction of soaking up every inch of lovely weather plus the pleasure of residing in a new space for the duration. You may also identify a real need for an outdoor setting, day bed or chair and ottoman that is just yours. Either way Ginger Jar Blue can help you make your house the home your want. You can email me at [email protected] send a PM or give me a ring on 0400 311 531. xxx Fiona See more

06.01.2022 Hello Everyone. Were all feeling wobbly but Im here for you! Then theres the perfect pairing of period and contemporary and do I even have to rhapsodize over the view? The piano accordion is playing Non, Je ne Regrette Rien, Ive a glass of Pol Roger in hand and Im on that sofa gazing over the rooftops of Paris *wipes drool* As I seem to have gone from not-enough-hours-in-the-day to what-will-I-do-with-myself-today in the space of a week, I think some design voyeurism is the ticket. Stay tuned for more over the top commentary, more gorgeousness and more drool (just at my end you dont have to) Sending much love to you all, Fiona See more
