24.01.2022 Can vitamin D help prevent a major side effect of immunotherapy cancer drugs? Patients with melanoma who received immunotherapy drugs were 65% less likely to de...velop colitis if they also supplemented with vitamin D. These findings were validated in another group of 169 patients, which found that vitamin D supplementation lowered the chances of developing colitis by 54%. These data suggest that larger randomized controlled trials are warranted to investigate the protective effects of vitamin D on the side effects associated with immunotherapy cancer drugs.

13.01.2022 The Special Children's Christmas Party has had to change for 2020, but Santa will deliver! I have been overwhelmed with the amazing positive response and feedba...ck that we are still creating so many smile for these kids . For children across Australia, this will be a Christmas like no other. COVID-19 has changed the world, but we are determined it won't stop Santa in his tracks. Thanks to the incredible support of our wonderful sponsors, partners and volunteers, the Special Children's Christmas parties, traditionally held across Australia, have brought joy to thousands of special needs children over 30 years. This year, the children, many of whom travel long distances with their families and carers to enjoy the party, have again been looking forward to their special day. But, 2020 is a year like no other and sadly this Christmas will see major changes. The safety, health and wellbeing of the children, families and carers, our volunteers, supporters, entertainers and staff is our major priority. And therefore, given the risks we must change direction this year. While many of the children will be disappointed, we refuse to allow COVID-19 to rob them of a happy Christmas. We will take Christmas to the children and deliver the toys and special messages to them! The mammoth task of re-organising, gathering, sorting and distributing toys across each state and territory is now underway. This wasn’t an easy task but it is definitely the right one with the health and safety of the children alway being our number priority. Thank you again for all the positive energy and support We have already been overwhelmed in requests for this year and we aren't able to take on any more.

10.01.2022 Dental Health Week 2020!

09.01.2022 Lovely day for a run along the beach front today. How is the enthusiasm from this very fit lady?

09.01.2022 What you see here is a split view of EU air travel. On the left is April 16, 2020 and on the right April, 18 2019. It can feel overwhelming to see this macro-vi...sual, doubting that one can change the trajectory of the planet's future. But it's actually quite the opposite. Every day, you get to choose the 'before' or 'after' photo shown above. You decide to purchase produce from a grocery store or a local farmer (even better, buy into a CSA farm in your town). You decide to drive to work, or bike. You decide if the next piece of clothing you purchase is new or second-hand. It's ultimately consumers who have the steering wheel. And each of these choices really just come down to caring rather than turning a blind eye. We truly can set up consumerism to put money back into detoxifying and regenerating Mother Nature. It just comes down to making ourselves more accountable. This global pandemic has forced all of us to sit back and finally give Mother Earth the stage. The virus, in some way, was Mother Nature showing us tangible proof of our capacity to change the future. We can see it with our own eyes; there's no question anymore. If there's one message we can take from 2020 so far, it's that we can affect change when we choose to. 09.01.2022 New topic article on quercetin! Quercetin, a flavonoid that is richly found in capers, peppers, and onions, has a variety of interesting properties ranging from... senolytic (with potential applications in aging) to anti-inflammatory to antiviral activity and more. Probably some of the most interesting evidence regarding quercetin is its potential role as a senolytic compound when given in conjunction with dasatinib. Senolytic compounds can can clear out age-related senescent cells in some tissues. A growing body of evidence supports the hypothesis that clearing senescent cells may treat and possibly reverse aging and age-related diseases. There is preclinical and very early clinical evidence that quercetin and low-dose dasatinib can do just that. For example, in an open-label phase 1 pilot study in which adults with diabetic kidney disease were given oral doses of quercetin and dasatinib for three days, the study participants demonstrated reduced senescent cell burden in adipose tissue within 11 days compared to baseline. The participants also exhibited fewer senescent cells in the blood, skin, and fat tissues. These preliminary findings demonstrate for the first time that senolytic drugs, including quercetin, can decrease senescent cells in humans. Much more clinical evidence is needed but very exciting groundwork! Quercetin may also have antiviral activity. One mechanism by which quercetin exerts its beneficial effects might lie in its capacity to serve as a zinc ionophore which allows zinc to be transferred inside of cells. Zinc is an essential nutrient that does many things including inhibiting the action of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase the enzyme critical for the reproduction of RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Essentially, zinc blocks the replication of viruses. However, zinc is a positively charged ion and cannot enter cells to perform this function without a transporter. Quercetin is a known ionophore and may help transfer zinc into cells. Although the quercetin has not been clinically tested against SARS-CoV-2, clinical trials are beginning, with outcomes expected in a few months. However, a randomized controlled trial involving more than 1,000 people indicated that daily supplementation with 1,000 mg of quercetin for 12 weeks did lower the rate and severity of upper respiratory tract infections in healthy individuals over the age of 40. There are many more interesting properties of quercetin including some early clinical evidence it may help with inflammatory disorders and hypertension. Hope you check the article out!
