25.01.2022 It's FOGO day! I feel like a proud mumma putting out my bin for our 1st collection....when I started my term as councillor the City of Bayswater, along with our region, was heading in a completely different direction for our waste... With a fresh look at our future and how we manage waste in our region along with the new State Waste Strategy, I’m so proud to have been part of the City of Bayswater, and our regional council, the EMRC, who like so many in our community hav...e now embraced composting through FOGO as an opportunity for us all. It’s been big and exciting: from learning from those who have gone before us, to the delivery of our kitchen caddies to reshaping our green bin collection, hearing from our community to building a facility at Red Hill that makes beautiful compost and all the moving parts in between...thank you! As always there’s plenty of information and support availabile from our amazing team at https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//waste,-rubbish-and-r/fogo See more

25.01.2022 Bin Night Tips: FOGO is coming to Bayswater early next year, so watch out for information on that. In the meantime, just garden scraps and clippings in the green bin; no food or peelings and NO plastic bags.

23.01.2022 Happy World Electric Vehicle Day! It's a great day to e-bike over to check out the new bike rack outside BeeJays Deli with owner Robert. Studies show that bike paths outside shops increase business and Robert hopes that this will make stopping by for milk, icecreams or flowers easier for the passing neighbours, dog owners and cyclists on the Safe Active Street.

23.01.2022 The opening of today's Art Festival at Ellis House, a festival for artist of all ages, art buyers, art lovers, and those who enjoy the ambience of historical Ellis House, high above the river in Bayswater. Janet Holmes a Court called the arts community of Bayswater and Ellis House a revelation, and marveled at the work of hosting a new exhibition every three weeks, by a team of amazing volunteers. She also spoke about how art reflects the changes in our society and she was looking forward to seeing the work of Bayswater Primary School later in the year to see what engages our young people. Congratulations Ellis House Art Centre - Art Gallery for an amazing festival.

21.01.2022 While site-works are already underway, the final plan for the much discussed and transformative Bayswater train station is up for approval by the WAPC in December. The final plan has been out for comment and it comes to a special council meeting next week for comment...and there’s a few! The agenda includes 9+ pages of comments covering site management, lighting, sustainability, access, placemaking, public art, pocket park, planting, paving, tree assessment, protection and ...replacement, bike and pedestrian access, traffic management in 20 streets and 15 intersections and more. At 6.30pm on Monday 9th Nov you may make a deputation (statement). The process to request an in-person deputation (essentially email in by 1.30pm on Monday) is here https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//council-meetings/petition At 7pm on Tuesday 10th Nov, it comes to council for comment. The 37 page agenda, with the list of comments, can be found here: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//cou/agendas-and-minutes/ The details of the plan can be found here: https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/bayswater-station If it feels like we’ve been here before, we have. A previous version of the plan came to council in September last year, but a few things have happened since, including the confirmed addition of the Ellenbrook line, so a whole new development application, in a new planning environment, is required.

18.01.2022 BRAVO! So good to catch up with some of the team at DADAA tonight celebrating the work of their talented artists and amazing art workers with an evening of art and performances. DADAA supports artists with disabilities, many Bayswater residents among them, in their professional practice. In a year like no other, art was produced differently, too. I had the privilege of seeing many of these works being developed, so it was a great joy to see them in the gallery! All works are for sale and the exhibition runs until next Saturday 7th November.

17.01.2022 Today's colourful and delightful festival by the Chinese Neighbourhood Watch Group had an important message about community safety and domestic violence awareness and support in our Chinese speaking community. Congratulations to president Lisa Li, the committee, sponsors and volunteers for the vital work that you do.

16.01.2022 What if there was a way of eating that was sustainable for the whole planet and provided all the nutrients you needed? Apparently it's possible! Learn more from a lovely local nutritionist in this hands-on workshop and cooking demonstration. Tomorrow, in conjuction with Share & Repair, bought to you by Transition Town Bayswater.

16.01.2022 Congratulations Greg and the Berringa Park Friends Group! In December 2018 they met and got straight to work: in January 2019 removing a giant peppercorn tree which had swamped the original paperbacks of our wetlands. Meeting and weeding (hardcore - more like pepper tree-felling and castor oil plant slashing!) supported by the City of Bayswater today's amazing planting of 1,500 trees was the first of the revegetation and isn't it quite the transformation? The work continues, there more to be done, but do wander down and have a look and consider getting involved here, or in your own local patch. Head over to their FB page to see the transormation and meet the team

16.01.2022 The new Maylands Waterland is taking shape, it looks great, with elements of the old site and a raft of of environmental, accessibility and safety improvements. 16.01.2022 Not in Bayswater, but these works in fibre are just so beautiful and can be found in the West Perth "Pickles District". Naturally, with a community of creatives, we're punching above our weight - the aptly named "Hanging by a Thread" exhibition features many talented artists from Bayswater and surrounds, many who embraced the lockdown as creative time and used repurposed materials.

15.01.2022 A beautiful day in Arbour Park for the community greening project, verge transformation, kids activities and the launch of Plants to Residents...$5 for 10 plants. 15.01.2022 "I think she's just bored and doing some housework" Thank you so much Geoff Trott and Margaret Landre from Friends Of Maylands Lakes for sharing your expertise and time to give me a guided tour of the lakes - it was a fascinating and useful morning: I saw some successful, and not so sucessful, projects and lots of new life...it's Djilba, the Nyoongar season of conception, and lots of the waterbirds are raising families, including the remaining, fiercely protective black swan pair. Many turtles are on the move seeking nests, with some late hatchlings still on the move. Sadly, many of them won't make it as they cross roads and get stuck in fences in search of sandy nesting sites - we saw evidence of foxes in the nests and cats on the hunt, too.

14.01.2022 Those cones on Garratt & Guildford are nothing! One of the biggest state government construction projects in Bayswater is the $290m Tonkin Gap project. It adds more lanes to the Tonkin Highway essentially between Guildford Road in Bayswater and over a widened bridge to Great Eastern Highway in Redcliffe, adding more cars and bike paths while reducing commute times and a whole lot of trees and habit. Cr Lorna Clarke - City of Bayswater presented a petition, which ...will also go to the state government, at last night's council meeting on behalf of residents requesting noise walls. While the immediate neighbours, living alongside in the Wyatt Rd or River Rd/Katanning St precincts may have heard, I know a whole lot of other folk blissfully unaware that construction is scheduled to start next month. Find out the details and ask questions tomorrow at a Community Open House run by Main Roads Western Australia Drop in between 4pm to 8pm on Thursday 24 September Forster Park Community Centre Main Hall Corner Keane Street and Abernethy Road, Cloverdale https://www.mainroads.wa.gov.au///metropolitan/tonkin-gap/ See more

14.01.2022 A glorious day for the (delayed) start of the season! I heard some excellent chanting at Hillcrest and loads of cheering at RA Cook. 14.01.2022 Like all diversity, gender diversity makes our community richer and stronger. The large and diverse transgender community in WA has a proud and strong history, it is something to celebrate and hold up with pride. Luckily we can: Pride WA has PrideFEST just around the corner, with events including Rainbow Talks and the Perth Pride Parade 2020 on 28th Nov Almost 50% of transgender and gender diverse people aged 14 to 25 have attempted suicide in their lifetime. Comments that... have been widely reported in the media today have real world consequences, and while I've made plenty of mistakes too, it's an opportunity to do better, listen and learn how to be an ally. Fabulous local bookshop Rabble Books & Games sets a fine example and has lots of resources, too. I use her/she and it's always best to ask before assuming. Transgender is a term used to describe people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Gender identity is a person's internal, personal sense of being a man or a woman (or boy or girl.) For some people, their gender identity does not fit neatly into those two choices. For transgender people, the sex they were assigned at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match. People in the transgender community may describe themselves using one (or more) of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, and non-binary. Always use the term used by the person. - If you are experiencing emotional distress, help is available. Lifeline WA is available for online support or call 13 11 14

12.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be is the theme of this week's National NAIDOC Week, a time to celebrate the long occupation, connection and custodianship that of our First Nations people have for this country. Update: All workshops sold out! Bayswater is hosting some opportunities to learn from local artists a very ancient skill, creating objects of function and beauty from natural materials: if you're a member of our Community Centres, learn Noongar basket wearing from Pearl Chaloupka, and at our libraries, learn how to weave animal tokens at our 'Fantastic Creatures' worship with Sharyn Egan. Details here: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//reconciliation/naidoc-week

11.01.2022 Water-saving and biodiversity in native and edible gardens, clever and beautifully flowering verges, street trees, water tanks, chooks, little library, money-saving solar panels, fabulous people...congratulations 2020 Most Sustainable Street residents of Cobden St!

09.01.2022 Lend a hand? After the planting days, and throughout the year, Friends groups around the City look after our new plantings and their local pockets of bush. Tomorrow there's weeding to be done! Fabulous to have follow up rains, but the weeds love it, too! Easy to find, just to the right of the pathway at the end of King William St as you head towards the river.

08.01.2022 Such a thrill to be able to hold the Bayswater Art Awards this year. There was a record number of entries and not all works could be included. Congratulations to all of the selected artists and award winners. The works can be viewed, and purchased, during opening hours at The Rise over the next 2 weeks. Supporting our creative community, 100% of the sales proceeds go to the artists.

08.01.2022 "That's Gold" Can't get enough of this, the healing power of the bush at Lightning Swamp. Thank you Barry and Belinda...and Alex. Always Was Always Will Be

04.01.2022 Here’s the agenda for August. Meetings are monthly again now so we’ll have questions and deputations this Tuesday 18th ahead of the Ordinary Council Meeting 6.30pm Tuesday 25th August. As usual, all the details here: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//counc/agendas-and-minutes

03.01.2022 One of the best things about the EMRC meetings is pouring over our region's waste data. This is our "before FOGO" data, with 95% of our waste going to landfill (red). For more, see the information bulletin that accompanies the agenda for tonight's meeting. As usual, the meetings are open to the public, with question time starting at 6pm. All the details here https://www.emrc.org.au//council-and-c/council-agenda.aspx

02.01.2022 Here’s the livestream details (on Youtube) for tonight’s council meeting

02.01.2022 The virtual 2020 Waste and Recycle Conference is underway with guest speaker economist Dr Richard Dennis of the Australia Institute hilariously zooming in from his car...talking gifting services instead of stuff, using the coffee culture as an example a way we can change behaviour, the insanity of buying bottled water at $10 a litre and complaining about the price of fuel, avoiding waste and then not wasting the waste - creating gas and organics instead of just burning it, creating jobs in labour intensive services rather than building things and the economic case for materials recovery and mandating the use of recycled content....and that's just the start!

02.01.2022 Tomorrow morning is the last of our community planting days - in our own very special Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary, Bayswater. Over winter, the environment team have supported hundreds of volunteers to plant thousands of plants all over the City and they're pretty good at it..all you have to do is turn up! See you there!
