08.01.2022 #OTD: HMAS Voyager Sunk On the 10th of February 1964, the destroyer HMAS Voyager was involved in a collision with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne off Jervis... Bay. In the resulting collision, Voyager was cut in two and sank in 1100 metres of water, with the loss of 81 sailors and 1 civilian technician. At the time of the incident, Melbourne was engaged in night flying exercises, with Voyager acting as plane guard, rescuing crew as necessary. This was the first time both had been involved in close quarters manoeuvring for almost six months and both ships were darkened and showing only navigational lights. At approximately 20:56, some twenty miles south east of Jervis Bay, the two ships collided. Melbourne struck Voyager at the aft end of her bridge, heeling her over to an angle of about 50 degrees. A flash appeared to come from Voyagers A Boiler, and she emitted high pressure steam and black smoke. Debris, including the revolution table from Voyagers bridge, and a pair of binoculars, was thrown onto Melbournes flight deck. The impact pushed Voyager bodily through the water for a few seconds, and then she broke in two. Her forward section passed down Melbournes port side, and the stern section down the starboard side. The forward section sank soon afterwards and the after section about three hours later. The disaster resulted in the loss of 82 lives (14 officers, including the commanding officer, 67 sailors and one civilian dockyard employee). There were 232 survivors. Melbourne was damaged but sustained no casualties. Lest we forget the loss of these brave men during this terrible tragedy. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you appreciate this content, please considering liking the page and sharing this post so others can learn about Australias fascinating military history!
