21.01.2022 ** PORT ALBERT ** "Gippsland Convict History Trip" Est. 1841. Initially known as "New Leith" until the town began to develop. The name was changed to Port Albert in honour of Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert. Convict activity at Port Albert was common as ex-convicts used the area to enter Gippsland. Many also settled in the area from the 1840s to 1870s... Pics taken 14/4/2021

09.01.2022 ** OLD PORT SITE, NEAR PORT ALBERT ** "Gippsland Convict History Trip" Est. 1841. The settlement was originally known as 'Seabank' or 'Old Port'. However it was not long before the town relocated to Port Albert as the shipping access was better. Convict activity at 'Old Port' is unclear, however once Port Albert was established many convicts used the area to enter Gippsland.... Pics taken 14/4/2021

07.01.2022 ** HAPPY FATHER'S DAY ** Hope all the parents out there have a relaxed day. Father's day and Mother's day are good opportunities for us all to look back at our history and remember those who came before us. Pictured is Benjamin Winch & Janet Kenneburry (nee Bruce) together in Sale, about 1868. The second image is their daughter Eliza Watts (nee Winch) in Bairnsdale in 1940. Cheers Daniel

03.01.2022 ** HENRY BODMAN, HENRY GREIG & HENRY MAXWELL 1840/41** Very interesting read regarding the life and times of Henry Bodman who came to Gippsland in 1840 with fellow convicts Henry Greig & Henry Maxwell. They were assigned to take cattle for Edmund Buckley to the Port Albert area via Buchen, setting out in 1840 and arriving in 1841. The book mentions several local names, even has an index. Thanks to the lovely person for the book suggestion. 02.01.2022 This is the monument for Pawel Strzelecki on the Princes Highway, east of Traralgon. After climbing Mount Kosciusko, Strzelecki and his party passed through thi...s area of Traralgon in April 1840. They then travelled along Traralgon Creek and abandoned their horses at Koornalla, before making their way through the heavily forested Strzelecki Ranges. This monument was erected in 1927. It was originally located 250m closer to Traralgon, then moved here in 2014. The monument was erected in the same year as the monument in Koornalla. It has the same design on the face plate as the monument in Koornalla, which was donated by the Polish Association of Latrobe Valley in 1966. There is some controversy over who was included in Strzelecki’s party. One of the signs at the monument includes all the names of the people, but they may not be entirely correct. Ron and Catherine Frew wrote detailed research on the members of the party in the book ‘Sounding the Ground’ (see book images attached). The party included: - Sir Pawel Edmund Strzelecki, 43 years old Polish explorer and geologist. Pawel is often anglicised as Paul. - Charley Tarra, an Indigenous guide from Taralga, NSW, from the fearsome Burra Burra tribe. - James MacArthur, 27 years old sheep farmer from Parramatta, NSW, and nephew of John MacArthurknown as the ‘father of the Australian sheep industry’. - James Riley, 19 years old, MacArthur’s colleague and friend. - James Nolan alias Keena, Irish convict and servant of Strzelecki. - John Rent, misidentified as John Kent, an African servant from London, who was transported to Port Jackson, NSW aboard the Grenada in 1821. He was MacArthur’s servant on this expedition.
