25.01.2022 Support small Gippsland businesses with some gift ideas for Father's Day (or anytime!).

23.01.2022 Whether you are a birdwatcher or not, surely everyone loves a male Superb Blue Wren in his handsome suit. This one came to visit us in the garden, doing a great job catching tiny insects. At this time of year he is often seen attacking his reflection in the car mirrors or windscreen. He just can't seem to drive that handsome intruder away! Did you know that next week is the Aussie Backyard Bird Count? https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ You don't have to be an expert birdwat...cher - just keen to record and count the birds in your own backyard, a nearby park or basically anywhere. If you only have a few birds where you live, or only know the names of a few of them, that's OK too. It all helps Birdlife Australia paint a picture of distributions of species, especially in urban environments. With so much fire affected country along the east of Australia, some birds are moving into different habitats - so everyone's information is helpful. See more

17.01.2022 Earlier this week we shared 4 days of purple wildflowers that we found at our bush block at Bruthen. To end the working week on a sunny note (given that the weather won't be so nice here today), we thought you might like a change of colour to this cheerful yellow "Handsome Flat Pea" (Platylobium formosum) Even though restrictions for regional Victoria have eased, we still won't be considering a spring program this year. The recent Winter Email Update https://www.gippslandhighcountrytours.com.au/sp/newsletters explains when we hope to restart our program and includes suggestions for some great nature experiences in East Gippsland that you might enjoy while you wait for our tours. https://www.gippslandhighcountrytours.com.au/sp/newsletters Love East Gippsland Ecotourism Australia

16.01.2022 Day 3 of our "Peaceful Purple" wildflowers to brighten up your day and follow on from the fact that the colour purple is dominating the spring wildflowers at our bush block at Bruthen at present. This delicate twining plant is called Love Creeper (Comesperma volubile), and is a soft mauve with only a few or no leaves at all. Even though restrictions for regional Victoria have eased, we still won't be considering a spring program this year. 13.01.2022 Right now, we have noticed that the colour purple is dominating the spring wildflowers at our bush block at Bruthen. So we thought we would share some "peaceful purple" wildflowers to brighten up the next few days. Today we start with the Waxlip Orchid (Glossodia major) which have just opened in the last few days and boy, we've got lots of them this year! Even though restrictions for regional Victoria have eased, we still won't be considering a spring program this year. The recent Winter Email Update (available on our website or click the link below) explains when we hope to restart our program and includes suggestions for some great nature experiences in East Gippsland that you might enjoy while you wait for our tours. https://www.gippslandhighcountrytours.com.au/sp/newsletters Love East Gippsland Ecotourism Australia

12.01.2022 Dragonflies and Damselflies can be very colourful insects. They are very similar but there are a few key differences. Dragonflies are usually larger, stronger fliers and when they rest (which is not that often) their wings are usually held out at 90 degrees to their body. Damselflies tend to be smaller, weaker fliers who rest often on vegetation usually with their wings parallel to their body. More information on each photo. Lake Glenmaggie in Central Gippsland is very full at present and on Friday before the rain arrived, the water was still providing lovely reflections.

10.01.2022 What a beautiful Spring morning to do a bird survey in our own piece of bush at Bruthen. Tiny Striated Thornbills are hard to find here, the trees are far too tall to see birds this small in the canopy where they normally feed - gleaning insects from the leaves. However today they were low, right down in the shrubbery, so I got wonderful views in full sun. I'd forgotten how beautiful they are! Back to the house for my camera and of course they'd moved into a shadier spot, but to my delight - the two adults were feeding 3 recently fledged and very vocal chicks! I managed one decent snap through the foliage before they fluttered off to a more distant bush and I retreated to leave Mum & Dad to focus on feeding their hungry trio. Another lovely sign of Spring. Are your local birds starting to nest yet?

10.01.2022 Wow, we've just made a great discovery. Its not in Gippsland but it is about nature! Angair have moved their annual wildflower show to an online presence - Angair Nature Show 2020. 08.01.2022 Day 4 and the last of the "Peaceful Purple" wildflowers that we found at our bush block at Bruthen last week. Many of you will be familiar with this deep purple creeper - Purple Coral Pea (Hardenbergia violacea) which is very popular in gardens and can be found easily in nurseries. Sometimes called "Happy Wanderer" or "Sarsperella" it certainly is a good one to brighten up your day. Even though restrictions for regional Victoria have eased, we still won't be considering a spr...ing program this year. 02.01.2022 Day 2 of our "Peaceful Purple" wildflowers to brighten up your day. Right now, we have noticed that the colour purple is dominating the spring wildflowers at our bush block at Bruthen. This is one of the native Violets "Showy Violet" (Viola betonicifolia), but I think this one actually looks more shy than showy. Even though restrictions for regional Victoria have eased, we still won't be considering a spring program this year. 01.01.2022 Sleeping native bees. How cute are these? In the freezing cold weather at the weekend, I found these small native bees sleeping in the centres of flowers on a daisy bush in the garden. They remained there looking cosy for the cold days, but after sunshine today, I found them in different flowers, so obviously today they were more mobile. More images of tiny wildlife like these can be found on our blog page https://www.gippslandhighcountrytours.com.au/blog Wildlife Tourism Australia Inc. Love East Gippsland
