25.01.2022 This year, to recognise Wear It Purple Day, GLCH is encouraging staff and community members to make and wear purple flowers, made from tissue paper. Andrea from our Health Promotion team recently donned the Purple cape this year to spread the message (and flowers) - from a social distance, of course. These flowers are very simple to make (visit https://youtu.be/7LzH4kFfDkA for a quick video demo). Wear It Purple Day is held every year on 28 August. In 2010, several rainbow... young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity, and ever since, Wear it Purple has been striving to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for young rainbow people (i.e. in the LGBTQIA+ community). GLCH supports this annual campaign by encouraging staff and community members to wear purple on 28 August and during the week leading up to. By doing so, youll be part of the change by helping to raise awareness, showing your support of young rainbow people, and being part of a movement that has the potential to save thousands of lives. This year, were inviting staff and community members to make a tissue paper flower and wear it on the day and in the lead up to Friday 28 August. 20.01.2022 RU OK? Day is coming up soon (Thursday 10 September). We can all make a difference in the lives of those who might be struggling by having regular, meaningful conversations about lifes ups and downs. If you feel like somethings not quite the same with someone you know theres something going on in their life or you notice a change in what theyre doing or saying - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK?... By acting as eyes and ears and reaching out to anyone whos going through a tough time we can show them theyre supported and encourage them to access help sooner. To further highlight the importance of mental health in our community, were inviting East Gippslanders to take part in a poetry/short story writing competition, as part of RU OK? Day (Thursday 10 September 2020). The four winning entries will be published in the Bairnsdale Advertiser, Lakes Post and Snowy River Mail on Wednesday 16 September, and the winners will each receive an awesome RU OK? prize pack. The small, resilient... school was the recipient of hand-decorated packets of seeds donated by kitchen garden schools (see our previous post). The seed drive, spearheaded by Gippsland Lakes Complete Health, brought much-needed practical support, and a good dose of happiness, to a tight-knit community seriously impacted by drought and bushfires, as well as the COVID-19 lockdowns. 12.01.2022 Today is RU OK? Day, where we encourage you to check in with each other by asking "R U OK?". GLCHs GP, Dr Jess Zimmerman shares these tips regarding mental health and how to maintain it for you and your children during these currently challenging times. Its OK not to feel OK, and actually quite typical for this time of the year, given the challenging experiences weve all gone through in 2020. If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to your GP or call GLCH on 5551 8300 to talk about how we may be able to help.

08.01.2022 A lovely good news story. A few months ago we put out a call for seeds to keep East Gippsland schools garden beds alive in an area ravaged by drought, fire ...and the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns. The response was heart-warming. Andrea and the team at Gippsland Lakes Complete Health would like to thank all the schools who donated their saved seeds. The community was touched by the extra care the children took, with beautiful decorated seed packets and hand-written notes. The seeds have been distributed by a wonderful group of local volunteers. Watch this space as we share some of the revitalised, flourishing school gardens! See more
