25.01.2022 A little bit of insight in to the training of the fastest man alive. As the article states, this post was written based on information sourced purely from Bolt's social media so you can't read too much in to it. However, you can still see the importance of sports specific training as Bolt's coaches have him completing some glute focused strength exercises as well as some explosive, Olympic lifting inspired movements. The writer, Bret Contreras is a great mixture of strength c...oach and sports scientist. He's been dubbed "The Glute Guy" but that name doesn't really do the scope of this blokes knowledge justice. Get used to seeing a few more of his articles and posts.

23.01.2022 The New Year brings with it a lot of resolutions and often people will choose to focus on their health and fitness, specifically weight loss. That's fine and the fact that we are becoming a more health conscious society is great, but beware of any "health coaches" looking to make a quick dollar off of your new goals and motivation. Seek the advice and guidance of a qualified health care professional (preferably someone with a degree) such as a dietician, nutritionist or exerc...ise scientist. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) they will tell you that anyone or any product promising a quick fix through the use of supplements such as meal replacement shakes is often selling biased propaganda and this is not a sustainable method for you to reach your goals. The attached article is well written and well informed. It goes in to a lot more detail regarding the issues surrounding these supplement "schemes". Thanks to Peter Davenport for sharing.

18.01.2022 It's been a while since I posted anything and with a lot of sporting seasons well underway I feel like this article may be a pretty helpful read for a lot of people. Written by the co-founder of Cressey Sports Performance and containing a number of links to related articles, if you're not feeling 100% in your training or competition at this point in the season then this article might help you shed some light on the reasons why.

17.01.2022 Interesting read. Here is the link to the test for anyone that is interested in taking it: https://www.worldfitnesslevel.org/#/

14.01.2022 With the ever-increasing numbers of people classified as being overweight, the prominence of weight loss programmes and quick fix solutions in the market is als...o on the rise. Unfortunately, they are luring in everyday people but also athletes and coaches who are attracted by these quick fix fad diets. HerbaLife, which I unfortunately came across a number of years ago, is another quick fix weight loss scheme that many people have been drawn in to. For those unfamiliar with Herbalife, it is an American multi-level marketing company that develops, markets and sells nutritional and weight management products. Putting aside the whole pyramid scheme and lawsuit against them, my issue is that these products are not promoting a healthy balanced diet but rather a quick fix to weight loss through supplements, shakes and protein bars. These products contain large amounts of ingredients and artificial sweeteners and enhancers that are far from healthy; several products were found to have extreme levels of lead (45 times the legal requirements in products) that can lead to detrimental effects on health. Another issue with Herbalife is the products targeting various individuals; they have now brought out The Herbalife 24 family line designed for athletes. This line of products includes pre, during and post work out formulas, hydration, strength and recovery formulas, which all aim to support athletes. However, the misconception of these products lies within the fact that they do not contain the nutrients required for optimal training and progression for athletes. For example Herbalife Formula 1 without skim milk is 90kcal and contains only 9g of protein and 13g of carbohydrates (9 grams sugar) - this represents a very minimal level of nutritional benefit. I do not promote protein shakes or similar products, but if you compare this to many other available protein supplements, which generally provide 20g-40g of protein per serving, it is clear that there are poor nutritional benefits from consuming this product. In addition to the insignificant amount of protein in this formula there is also a substantial amount of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates in the form of simple sugars cause the blood sugar levels to spike, rather than complex carbohydrates, which release sustained levels of energy over longer periods of time. So these formulas taste great (due to sugar) while also containing little in the way of nutrients. For an athlete who is in training and deciding to consume these in place of a nutrient-rich diet, they will find that after consuming these products your body starts to use vital stores of protein in the muscles to provide the energy required for your training and daily routine... Yes, all that progress could be at risk!! Nutrients from natural foods are the best option rather than these Herbalife weight loss products. Unfortunately for individuals out there who want to lose weight there is no secret formula; eating a clean balanced diet and undertaking exercise is the best way to lose weight, despite what clever marketing may lead people to believe! 07.01.2022 With regards to strength training, don't compare yourself to others. You possess a unique profile defined by height, body segment lengths, somatotype, joint sha...pe, body mass/composition/shape, kinesthetic intelligence/coordination, satellite cell efficiency, individual muscle mass/shape/leverage/activation/fiber type composition, and hormone/enzyme levels. No two lifters are completely alike. There will inevitably be lifts that you are inherently strong and/or weak at, and there will always be lifters out there who are markedly stronger and/or possess better physiques than you. Do not let this discourage you. Progress is progress. If you're currently making gains and working hard, then be proud of your efforts regardless of where you currently stand. See more

05.01.2022 Great article on the relationship between exercise science and training practices applied by strength coaches, personal trainers etc. I certainly don't claim to be an exercise scientist. I do however, claim to be a coach that does his best to keep up to date with relevant scientific literature. Then I do my best to apply the findings to my training and the training I prescribe for those I work with. It's a relatively long post so if you can't bothered reading the whole thing skip to the sub-heading "Is there really a conflict" down the bottom.
