You can also see more photos of Morwell Power station and briquette factory if you go to the photos tab on our page. 14.01.2022 A great photo from KJ Welch of the snow at Tarra-Bulga National Park - a great natural and cultural asset for the Gippsland region.

12.01.2022 Ron Lambert’s PhD is being hosted by the Centre for Gippsland Studies at Federation University. He is looking at technological and labour process changes in the Gippsland and Swedish forestry industry in the 1960s and 1970s. As part of Ron’s research and community engagement plan, Ron convened a workshop on Gippsland forestry history on Sunday, 14th July, held at the CWA rooms in Traralgon. On a very cold Sunday afternoon we still had 20 people come along and join in the disc...ussion. Participants were welcomed by Centre Director, Professor Erik Eklund, who spoke of the way that history has been democratised and opened up to new perspectives and new topics. Prof Eklund praised Ron’s method as a way of developing a genuine collaborative effort between the community and University researchers. Ron outlined his current PhD plans and then showed a fascinating APM promotional film from the 1950s, ‘The Eternal Forest’. As Ron pointed out, the Frank Hurley documentary is very much a product of its time. Ron’s talk and the film provoked plenty of discussion and sharing. We would like to thank the CWA for the venue, Ron’s family for their wonderful input, and the participants who made it all possible. Those interested in Ron’s research are welcome to contact him on 040192 4595 or email [email protected] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUr_aqyuSMs

07.01.2022 CGS has recently been given a rundown by co-ordinator Judy Farmer on the excellent work produced by 'The Stories of Drouin' project run by the Committee For Drouin, the Drouin History Group, and 3bbrfm - West Gippsland Community Radio Inc. Since 2015 this project has been collecting stories of Drouin using local knowledge and expertise on what is best described as a very modest budget. A feature of the project has been it not only produced an excellent set of professionally ...recorded interviews but it also became an exercise in community development in the process. This is an exemplar of how good local history, done with local control and input, strengthens community and creates new connections amongst residents, old and new. Apart from the website below, there is also a youtube video covering one of the Drouin West cemetery walks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjn24QY3h_I&t=218s https://www.storiesofdrouin.com.au/

04.01.2022 Showcasing Cemetery Heritage Historical Societies and family history groups have been offering cemetery tours across the Gippsland region, which are becoming increasingly popular. These cemeteries are crucial sites of local heritage and memory. They are important places but are often overlooked in the shadow of more high profile heritage sites. All active cemeteries are run by volunteer trusts with very modest resources and few, if any, employees. Cemetery tours are a good wa...y to explore the social history of your region and a good way to support your local cemetery trust. The Hazelwood Cemetery Trust is running a cemetery tour on Sunday 29th September from 1.30pm . Details are in the attached link. (Disclosure: The CGS Director is a volunteer member of the Hazelwood Cemetery Trust Board) https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hazelwood-cemetery-history-
