23.01.2022 Jesse didn’t know he had insurance and when he couldn’t work anymore, because of a heart problem, Rick from Cbus let him know he was covered. Cbus is standing u...p for members in the construction industry. The Government wants to change super laws that could see workers new to the industry stapled to a fund that won’t give them insurance that covers dangerous occupations. 21.01.2022 John Holland sacked two elected health and safety reps over the weekend. Both were sacked on the Government’s Level Crossing Removal projects for raising legit...imate safety issues. For months, these Reps have been fixing problems that have the potential to seriously injure or kill workers. John Holland’s response is to terminate them. Now the Reps are gone, they’ve hired a bunch of wannabe thugs to scare the workers into silence and keep the Union out. All of these dodgy dealings are happening on a Government job funded by taxpayers. We'll continue to challenge John Holland on their deplorable safety record.

20.01.2022 We joined with the Transport Workers Union - TWU this morning at the Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Dandenong for the global Amazon Day of Action. Amazon is one of... the most powerful corporations on the planet, headed by the world’s richest person, CEO Jeff Bezos. During the pandemic, we have seen Amazon grow into a trillion dollar corporation and Bezos become the first person in history to amass $200 billion in personal wealth. Meanwhile, Amazon warehouse workers work hard on low pay and it pays close to 0% corporation tax. Everyone knows THIS IS WRONG. Amazon's success would be impossible without workers. Amazon takes too much and gives back too little. It is time to #MakeAmazonPay.

20.01.2022 Just a few short years ago on the morning of the 21st March 2018 Jack Brownlee, 21, and Charlie Howkins, 34, were killed at work in a trench collapse nearby in ...Delacombe. Charlie was killed instantly and Jack died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital the next day. Every year we gather to remember them, and those that have died at work like they did. Now - we need a proper memorial where we can gather, and pay tribute to the workers who have fallen, and reinvigorate ourselves to fight like hell for the living. We have the space, in a parkland along the Kensington Creek, and we have a local Ballarat artist, Garry Anderson, to produce the memorial. Now we just need your help to make history, and create a beautiful workers memorial in Ballarat. If you can, please donate. For the memory of those we have lost, and those we still have to fight for.

19.01.2022 4000 of us are killed by asbestos-related diseases every year. Despite about one third of homes built between the 1940s and 1990 containing asbestos, workers co...ntinue to be put in unsafe working environments with inadequate PPE and without sufficient knowledge to avoid the unnecessary risk of exposure. Find out more about what you can do to avoid this deadly material as we close out Asbestos Awareness Month at https://asbestosawareness.com.au

19.01.2022 GO THORPDALE! THE RE-OPENING OF A GRAND OLE GIPPSLAND HOTEL! After a six month hiatus, the Travellers Rest Hotel in Thorpdale reopened on Friday under new owner...ship and management. The vacuum cleaners were out, and final touches of paint were added to spruce up the old building, which will begin a new life as a destination pub that will hopefully attract tourists and new life to the town. Originally built in 1905, the pub was run by four generations of the Bantock family, who gave the interior of the building an Art Deco makeover in 1937, with winnings from the Melbourne Cup. As the centre piece of picturesque Thorpdale, backpackers who worked on the neighbouring potato farms would often stay at the pub, which was well patronised by the local farming and football loving community. But tragedy struck in 2017, when beloved publican Johnny Bantock perished in a fire which engulfed the building. Johnny’s memory and the Bantock legacy which has been honoured by the new owners with the renaming of the front bar as the ‘Bantock Bar’. As the new hotel navigates the delicate balance between serving long-time locals and the palettes of weekend tourists from Melbourne, the building has been renovated with a spectacular beer garden and deck to make the most of the town’s exquisite views. Plans for upstairs accommodation, wedding receptions and even a potato vodka distillery are also on the cards. The new kitchen and bistro is set to reopen in February next year, and will showcase local produce, bush foods and dishes featuring Thorpdale’s most famous export- potatoes!

This is something Australian writers, producers, directors, actors and crew have been lobbying for for the last four years. #MakeItAustralian See more

09.01.2022 STATE BUDGET: The Andrews Government’s $40 million kick start to implement nurse/carer to resident ratios in private aged care to improve the clinical care, saf...ety and dignity of residents has put much needed safe staffing firmly on the table. 04.01.2022 13 years ago, tireless social activist and anti-asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton AM died peacefully in his sleep. Bernie was the face of the major political an...d legal campaign to win compensation for thousands of people who contracted asbestos related illnesses after working for James Hardie or after being exposed to James Hardie Industries' products. Bernie fought this fight while diagnosed with asbestosis and also Asbestos Related Pleural Disease (ARPD). Bernie’s death coincides with Asbestos Awareness Week, and may he remind us all of the importance of workplace health and safety and the duty of employers, especially around hazardous materials such as asbestos and silica. Bernie Banton's legacy as a powerful advocate and strong voice for workers will not be forgotten. He fought for justice for the victims of asbestos - and the fight will continue. Vale Bernie Banton AM. 13 October 1946 - 27 November 2007

03.01.2022 NAME AND SHAME: GERRY HANSSEN Yesterday, Gerry Hanssen's construction company, Hanssen Pty Ltd was fined a piddling $60,000 for health and safety violations ide...ntified as part of the investigation into the death of German backpacker Marianka Heumann. Marianka fell 13 floors down an open shaft to her death. Gerry Hanssen and his management didn't even stop work. They made Marianka's collogues keep working while she lay on the concrete covered with a canvas sheet. The site was not shut down or secured properly and this ultimately led to difficulties in any prosecutions for Marianka's death. So the fine handed down yesterday was for other failures to cover open perpetrations on the site as a result of the investigation. Hanssen was given no direct penalty at all for Marianka's death. Just for the record, Gerry Hanssen is a Liberal Party hack who donates prolifically and as a result enjoys a cozy relationship to Liberal Party leaders in WA and in Canberra. This shows exactly why we needed Industrial Manslaughter laws in WA. Unfortunately they didn't come soon enough to protect Marianka Heumann or to hold Hanssen accountable for the disgraceful failures that killed her. Gerry Hanssen has no place in the WA construction industry.
