21.01.2022 Join people across Victoria as we raise awareness of domestic and family violence at the 12th Annual Walk Against Family Violence on November 25. Although we ca...n’t walk together around Melbourne’s CBD like in previous years, we can still help raise awareness of family violence and violence against women in our communities by participating in a "walk from home" event on November 25. Register online at http://bit.ly/WAFV2020 and then make your plan for the day: walk or wheelchair around the block, go for a walk with a friend, or find a group and participate in a planned local event in your area - you choose. By organising a walk, wearing orange and joining others using #WAFV2020 and #WhyWeWalk on social media to share a video or photo from your walk, you can show your support for victim-survivors and help send a message across Victoria that family violence and violence against women is never okay. Details and registration at http://bit.ly/WAFV2020
21.01.2022 "One of the most important things for regional and remote communities is prevention efforts, to know this behaviour is not tolerated and sets a cultural standard." - Patty Kinnersly, Chief Executive Our Watch Regional domestic violence services plead for more funding for prevention to protect women and children as they see a sharp rise (the shadow pandemic) in violence against women reports. Research suggests that women in rural areas are less likely to come forward and repo...rt their abuse because of the tight-knit community relationships and the fear of being found out. Today is #LightACandle2021 vigil. We invite everyone in the community to light a candle at work or at home to remember the women and children who have died as a result of family violence. Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre is holding an online vigil at 6 pm to register follow this link: bit.ly/lightacandle2021

16.01.2022 Tomorrow is #LightACandle2021 Vigil. Gippsland Women’s Health (GWH) invites communities across Gippsland to come together for a special candlelight vigil and to remember the women and children who have died as a result of family violence. To join the state-wide vigil register at bit.ly/lightacandle2021 The event comes at a time of particular concern to GWH as the rates of family violence in Gippsland are reported as being some of the highest in the state. Kate Graham, GWH ...CEO, said Through subsequent disasters including drought, bushfire and the COVID-19 pandemic and the extended periods of isolation we have seen increased incidents of family violence and we are committed to working with government and the community to see this trend reversed. This event follows the recent funding announced by the Hon. Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Women, Minister for Prevention Family Violence and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs during a recent visit. The Minister confirmed $140,000 will be provided to GWH to provide further family violence prevention work in East Gippsland where subsequent disasters have significantly impacted the region. This additional funding will allow GWH to work with the East Gippsland Shire to implement family violence prevention strategies over the next 12 months. #FamilyViolence #DomesticViolence #ViolenceAgainsWomen #GenderedViolence #LightACandle2021 #LightACandleGippsland

14.01.2022 The number of women who are hospitalised from domestic violence, the very high incidence of domestic violence amongst our Indigenous communities they are all statistics that we as a country need to tackle. - Social Services Minister Anne Ruston With the government planning to widen the scope on prevention of violence against women in the new national plan, experts are calling for an increase in spending on emergency housing, legal help, counselling services, education in ...schools, and indigenous support. With services in never before seen before demand, there is a call for federal support alone to be scaled up to at least $12 billion over 12 years. This would bring anti-violence measures into line with federal spending in other fields. #PreventViolenceAgainstWomen #PreventViolence
14.01.2022 "At least two doctors passed off my symptoms as an infection and even being a tired mother. - Jane Lindhe, Women's Agenda More and more young Australian women are being diagnosed and Jane explains that many symptoms of bowel cancer in young women are disregarded, In my case, most things could be explained. For example: fatigue (I had an eight-month-old baby who was still waking several times a night to be breastfed), stomach pain (perhaps muscle separation from pregnancy... or carrying the baby around) then blood in my stool (maybe some dreaded haemorrhoids after the birth?).. Experts stress that it is important to know your own bodies and recognise when something isn’t normal. #WomensHealth #BowelCancer #KnowYourBody [Image: A blonde haired mother lies in a hospital bed. 09.01.2022 It's World Health Day today and we couldn't agree more with what 1800 My Options has highlighted under this year's theme 'building a fairer, healthier world.' Ensuring everyone has access to safe, effective, and affordable sexual and reproductive healthcare should not be determined by your race, gender, age, sexuality, financial and housing insecurities, or geographical location. #WorldHealthDay2021 #GoodHealthisaHumanRight #HealthEquality
04.01.2022 "The grief that comes with miscarriage is not a sickness; it is a loss, and that loss takes time - time to recover physically and time to recover mentally." - Government MP Ginny Andersen New Zealand is one of the first countries in the world to have passed a bill granting three days paid leave when a pregnancy ends with a stillbirth, rather than forcing them to use their sick leave. We hope other countries follow and recognise the pain and grief that come with pregnancy loss.
02.01.2022 The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence aims to prevent and stop violence against women and girls. Starting on Wednesday 25 November, Gippsland Women’s Health will be sharing different ways you can help prevent violence against women in our community. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence has its roots in the powerful political activism that three sisters; Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa Mirabal (pictured), carried out to actively oppose the cr...uelty and systematic violence of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The sisters were killed in 1960 by Trujillo’s secret police for their political activism. The Mirabal sisters became symbols of the feminist resistance and, in commemoration of their deaths, the 25th of November was declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in Latin America in 1980. This international day was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1999 and now marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Action: Keep an eye on your feed over the 16 days and share posts with your network, family, and friends. If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 000 and ask for the police. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, help is available. Contact SAFE STEPS 1800 015 188 a confidential and supportive family violence response line for Victoria.
