21.01.2022 Developmental delays can occur for many reasons and have a variety of impacts. I will be running an online workshop for parents of children with developmental delays soon. I will cover the building blocks of development, primitive and postural reflexes, the sensory system, and the fight and flight response. The workshop will be live and relevant to the families participating. We will explore reasons for the difficult behaviours, and strategies to help your child maximise their development. The workshop will run over several weeks. Families with NDIS funding and without funding can participate. Please send me a message if you are interested in joining in. 14.01.2022 Hello I hope you are all finding ways to stay calm. This is a technique called Calming Points. It was developed by Brendan OHara who is a kinesiologist. You gently hold the temple at the hair line and have 3 fingers in the sternal notch. Take some deep breaths and send loving calming intention to these points and to your heart. Then swap hands. Take some more deep breaths. Then you can hold both temples and imagine a rainbow going over your head with all the healing col...ours. These points are the Neurovascular holding points for the Triple warmer Meridian. This controls the heat of metabolism, maintaining body heat and the fat content of the body. It is a survival mechanism and controls our fight, flight and freeze response. When it is overactive it impacts on our ability to relax, stress, anxiety and can contribute to chronic fatigue and immune disorders. So it is important to help this system to be balanced. I have done a video which I hope will upload. Love Grace and Gratitude. Stay Calm. Samantha Brick I am available for online sessions.

12.01.2022 This is a pyramid of development. Academic learning is at the very top. Daily living (e.g. feeding self, dressing self) and behaviour are the next level. We can not expect children to be able to do these things with ease unless all the lower levels are fully developed. Schools and families are putting way too much pressure on kids who are not able to achieve those things yet - because you dont know about this. The bottom of the pyramid is the central nervous system and the ...sensory system. These are the foundations. People can be over-sensitive or under-sensitive to all the senses. They can be active ( sensory seeking or sensory avoiding). They can be passive ( poor registration or sensory sensitivity). The best way to feel just right is to use big muscles and deep pressure - jump, push, pull, squeeze, crawl, tight clothing, heavy blankets, hugs. Kids often do this for themselves by crashing into things etc. A lot of behaviour is about kids trying to get or avoid sensations. Reflex integration is another key area that impacts on all of your behaviours and skills. Early developmental movements like wiggling and crawling are needed. I have put some videos on my Gippsland Wellbeing Centre Facebook page with some explanations and strategies. My main message to families at the moment is to do lots of movement together. Have fun together too. And link the learning to things that they are interested in. It might not be what the school is asking you to do but it will be better in the long term for you all. And you all need mental health days too. All the best. Samantha Brick Occupational Therapist and Kinesiologist

08.01.2022 Calming strategies. Lots of people need them at the moment. Try some new ones every day when calm. Different things will work on different days. Have lots of calming things easily available for children so they can learn to self regulate.

07.01.2022 As a practising kinesiologist and health coach, Ive got access to a bunch of resources which support children with learning challenges. My own child is challen...ged with sequencing. . This means her ability to arrange language, thoughts, information and actions in an effective order gets wonky (very technical term). . Many kids with learning and thinking differences have trouble with sequencing as it can affect the ability to follow instructions, speak properly and complete multi-step tasks. . Now that we are socially distancing, there are red flags rising with potentially more work to do. These flags are also indicative of why she is so frustrated and emotional at the end of the school day because she is still missing cues and unable to follow instructions correctly. . Does this sound like a familiar story to you? Check out my blog - "Does Your Child Struggle With Focus & Attention?" Theres 18 active ways to increase self-regulation during COVID!! .
