24.01.2022 A great reminder that we are all in this together.
24.01.2022 Check out this great coverage of the West Gippsland Hockey Association Inc.'s Junior Summer Competition. Why does it stand out? Because we get to hear from White Wolves player Tayla Smith, who shared her perspective of the game and her contribution. Last week we presented at Latrobe Valley Authority's 'Engaging With Media and Marketing Your Sports Club' webinar and spoke about the importance of giving young people a voice when it comes to youth sport. This aligns with findin...gs in our Increasing Access to Sport project, which notes "the more youth can see themselves doing something, the more likely they are to engage. If they are unable to see other youth like them, then they are less likely to feel welcomed or that opportunities are accessible for them". Terrific work WIN News Gippsland and WGHA Check out the full Increasing Access to Sport project report here: https://gippsport.com.au/increasing-access-to-sport-projec/ #YOUthSportLatrobe Latrobe Health Assembly GippSport

22.01.2022 As a shy kid, the challenge of meeting new people could easily have prevented Kaylah Dunstan from participating in sport. However, the self-confidence and belief that Kaylah gained through basketball has helped her overcome that barrier and enjoy the various benefits sport has to offer - a message she endeavours to share with others through her roles as a coach. Kaylah's experience aligns with Increasing Access to Sport project findings which noted that "a fear of judgement a...nd perceived social pressure stopped youth in the Latrobe Valley trying new activities or joining new clubs". The #YOUthSportLatrobe feature series shares inspiring stories highlighting the contributions young people make to sport in the Valley. The Increasing Access to Sport is supported by the Latrobe Health Assembly as an initiative within the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone. 22.01.2022 Did you know that many young people in the Latrobe Valley see sport as a way of relieving stresses in their life? For others, social and performance-related pressures associated with sport have the opposite effect... It's worth keeping this in mind as we develop return to training or play plans to ensure sport remains a healthy outlet and not an added source of stress for our youth.... The Increasing Access to Sport project report is now available to view online - check it for more information on perceived barriers and potential solutions to sports participation among those aged 12-18 years in Latrobe City. https://gippsport.com.au/increasing-access-to-sport-projec/ This project is an initiative of the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone. 20.01.2022 As we prepare to reboot community sport, the challenge of engaging and re-engaging our youth has perhaps never been more complex. The Increasing Access to Sport Project has been exploring the barriers to sports participation facing 12-18 year olds in Latrobe City and one theme that emerged was that sport is not enough fun. That on-field and off-field pressures are too much. In light of the current situation, we are delivering an online version of our free Positive Coaching Wo...rkshop to share information and advice with local coaches, administrators and volunteers to help guide their approach to re-establishing and increasing youth participation moving forward. 19.01.2022 Our team understand that it is a challenging time for the community sport sector. Club members miss the opportunity to participate, volunteer and compete. Many of the clubs that we have worked with like Trafalgar Golf Club to develop strategic plans haven't been able to realise the short term goals that were identified. However, the planning process was extremely valuable to build capacity, leadership and a long term vision about where the club is heading and how it is goin...g to get there in the longer term. This time can be a period of rest, consolidation and planning for the great program and initiatives that can be implemented when players return to the course. If any clubs that we have worked with need any advice as to how to reprioritise or focus effort during this time, please do not hesitate to contact Michelle at [email protected]. Please visit our GippSport COVID19 resources page at https://gippsport.com.au/covid-19-information-for-gippslan/

19.01.2022 You may have seen this post doing the rounds in recent weeks. It's a good illustration and a timely reminder of the type of environment we need to avoid for our grassroots sports clubs and associations. One in which participants can be made to feel they don’t belong or deserve the same opportunities as others. Through consultation, we know there is at least a perception of this being an issue in the Latrobe Valley that negatively impacts youth participation. As noted in our ...Increasing Access to Sport project report, ‘a fear of judgement and perceived social pressure stopped youth from trying new activities or joining new clubs’. For information and support around strategies to help improve parent, coach and sport facilitator conduct, such as positive coaching and managing sideline behaviour, contact GippSport. 18.01.2022 We had a fantastic strategic planning session with the Warragul Tennis Club with support from Jade at Tennis Victoria. 17.01.2022 As community sport gradually returns, mostly in the form of junior and youth competitions, we made a short video about how grassroots leagues and clubs can use this opportunity to better understand and cater for the needs and motivations of people aged 12-18 years moving forward, based on findings from the Increasing Access to Sport Project. 13.01.2022 Our team visited Lifeline Gippsland to donate some second hand sports gear and to see what was available to purchase. Our second hand sports equipment program has been developed to reduce the barriers for young people to play sport in the Latrobe Valley. This project is an action of the Increasing Access to Sport Project which is a partnership between GippSport and Latrobe Health Assembly.... With a new winter sport season right around the corner, now is a perfect time to donate and take a look at the selection in Lifeline stores, which also raise money to provide crisis support to our community.

12.01.2022 The Premier & Chief Health Officer have announced changes to the directions for Regional Community Sport. Full-contact training for people aged 19 and over, was... scheduled to resume on Monday 13 July, with full-contact competition set to return on 20 July. However, with a significant increase in coronavirus cases in Melbourne, and active cases in a number of many regional communities, the Chief Health Officer has determined that community sport in regional Victoria for people aged 19 or over must remain non-contact. Junior sport can continue as previously announced under the Victorian Government return to play guidelines. A further announcement will be made towards the end of July to revisit the timeline for adult sports participation. https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/regional-community-sport-to/
