My Femme Friday feature this week is tackling this statistic head on with her brand Thrift Be With You. Meet Kahlia, the incredible woman behind this fashion label with a conscience. Thrift be with you started out as an ethical fashion blog in 2016 and has evolved into a bespoke vintage clothing brand on a mission to provide an alternative to fa...st fashion. Kahlia says Fast fashion is not only destroying our beautiful planet, but its perpetuating the cycle of poverty that further marginalises garment workers and exposes them to unsafe working conditions. Each piece of clothing sold through Thrift Be With You is vintage and sourced from op-shops and flea markets from around the world. And even though their carbon footprint is almost non-existent, Kahlias company also donates $1 from every sale to plant a tree here in Australia, through One Tree Planted. Deadly Denim is the perfect amalgamation of all the things that Beck loves to bits. Her family, her culture and her hobbies; upcycling and fashion. It opened its doors in 2012 as part of the Renew Newcastle program. Ange's vision was to create a space where she could create, collaborate and share her work with the local community. Slowly the space started to fill with her incredible work, and began to catch the attention of locals. An...ge decided she wanted to find other other small-scale jewellery and object makers to feature, so she began the search. 17.01.2022 Todays #FemmeFriday is a telling example of the time were living in. Its happening in households across Australia as we come to terms with the reality of living with a global pandemic. This weeks Femme Friday is a friend and ex-colleague of mine who, in the past six months has had to reinvent herself due to COVID19. Introducing Fior, a Fim & TV costume designer/Stylist, who after production shut-down has had to find new ways to generate income. Fior has started making was...hable face masks to help provide some protection against COVID. Her masks are made to order. Her shaped masks are triple layered with cotton and cotton/poly blend outer layers, with a non-woven inner layer which acts as a filter. Her masks are reversible with prints or plain colours and also have elastic ear loops. They are all made within DHHS and CDC guidelines. She offers kids and adult sizes. This is a new venture for Fior, so theres no fancy website or Insta account just one very determined woman doing what she can to get through. 12.01.2022 Im putting down the 'Femme Friday' pencil today, and instead would like to take a moment to express my solidarity with all people of colour - in Australia, the USA and across the world. The horrific murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin fills me with terror and disgust in equal measure. As the wife of an African American and the mother of my gorgeous son, this imagery burns a hole in my heart, and fills me with a rage I cannot silence. When I wa...lk alongside my husband and son, I see so clearly how difficult and fraught their path is (yes! Even in Australia), and how simple and unfiltered mine is in comparison. In my despair and search for guidance this week, I turned to one of my favourite people - Michelle Obama, who said - Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we ever hope to move past it, it cant just be on people of colour to deal with it. Its up to all of us Black, white, everyone. We all need to do the uncomfortable work of rooting it out. So let it start here. I commit to doing the uncomfortable work, and I ask that you join me so that we can generate the enormous groundswell needed to make lasting change. I need to know that change is possible. And that my son and others like him can grow up without fear of public execution, because of the colour of his skin. BLACK. LIVES. 08.01.2022 It's Femme Friday! I know you've all been counting down! This week I bring you - artist, Angie Goto. Angie is an Australian artist with a unique figurative, abstract interpretation of her surroundings. She was born deaf so art provides her with a vehicle to explore colour and images from another perspective. She enjoys working with her hands, and over the years has successfully made and sold handmade products in ceramics, glassware, clothing, art and gifts in Australia, Afr...ica and England. Painting has become her full time occupation as it allows her unlimited creative control. Angie can communicate and use Auslan (Australian Sign Language) with the deaf community. She finds inspiration from the world through meditative silence of her mind. Angie studied Fine Art and Graphic design in Newcastle and Sydney. Angie's return to painting was heralded by her Tropfest film called "Angie" which was the Finalist in 2015. She has held several successful exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne and has collections sold overseas and Australia. Angie works part time as an Art Educator at The Museum Of Contemporary Art Sydney for their programs including Auslan Art Tours for the deaf community. In her own words, Angie's Artist's statement is - In a world of conflicting opinions, ideas, beliefs and truths, many people are far removed from their own reality. There is a way to find yourself in this "soup called life". The roadmap to you was created on the day you were born...alone. It will be revisited again when you die...alone. This alone should force you to realise that in your allotted time on earth, all you learn should continue your journey of you being you through all your experiences. Since Covid Angie has had to postpone her exhibitions until 2021 till but she has a few paintings showing at the Affordable Art Show in Melbourne with Anala Art Gallery in September.
