14.01.2022 Welcome to the Girl Guides Gracemere Page. Girl Guides is for girls aged 5 to 18 years. It's about fun, friends & adventure! It's our mission to empower girls & young women to grow into confident, self respecting, responsible community members. For more information click the 'Learn More' button which will direct you to the Guides Queensland Website. We also have many opportunities for Adult members from helping in one of our units to leadership. Assisting in Girl Guides is a ...fun and rewarding role for any women who enjoy making new friends whilst doing a vast array of activities such as camping, craft or even canoeing. We often come from a range of professions with varying skills but no experience is necessary and all training is provided. All helpers and leaders must hold a valid blue card, we can assist any new members with this requirement. We invite women in the Gracemere or surrounding district to come and join the world wide network that is making a difference in girls and young women's lives See more

12.01.2022 It's World Autism Awareness Day and we want to honour the unique gifts and recognise the unique challenges of our girls and adult members with ASD! Here's a gre...at story about Scarlett, who has ASD and loves being a Girl Guide. Scarlett has high functioning autism. She lacks social skills and finds it very hard to make friends. Girl Guides was the perfect choice because it catered to her needs. Traditional team sports are not an option for Scarlett. She is very sensitive to loud noises and the cheering of crowds and the blowing of whistles are distressing for her She is also uncoordinated and therefore struggles with most physical skills to the extent that she feels different. These feelings of inadequacy impact on her anxiety, eliminate any enjoyment from the activity and result in her not wanting to participate. With Girl Guides, I have finally seen Scarlett begin to flourish. All the girls are very supportive and are aware of her sensitivities and accommodate them. Because there is no game to win, there is no pressure placed on her. The activities Scarlett partakes in at Girl Guides enhance all the areas she struggles with socially, such as working as a team, resilience, compromise and communication. These are all skills that will help her become a well-adjusted adult. The events that the Guides participate in are always community oriented. This has contributed to Scarlett broadening her mind past her sense of self. She knows now there are people worse off than her and more importantly, she can do something to help. Once, when Scarlett sang Christmas Carols at an aged care facility, she was very nervous but when she saw how much enjoyment it brought to these people, it opened up her mind beyond a child's usual sense of everything being about them. She said to me, "Mum, some of these people are really lonely. I think we made them a little bit less lonely today." What other organisation can boast those kinds of credentials? Girl Guides are helping to shape girls into community minded, responsible and supportive women. #worldautismday
