14.01.2022 GIRL GUIDES DURING WARTIME It's a little known fact that Guides did important work to help the AIF and war effort during both major conflicts. Check out these fascinating ways they helped: Initially in World War II, Naval signal men were trained in Morse code and Semaphore by Girl Guide Leaders in Sydney. Sally Carlton had been a Brownie, Guide and Ranger Leader since 1930, as well as a Trainer, and she was the Western Australian delegate in Sydney at the conference to or...ganise the Women’s Land Army scheme. Flies were a serious problem both in the eyes and the ears of horses; flies in the ears would distress an animal to the point of ignoring discipline and bolting. Wagin Girl Guides made horse fly veils and samples were sent to the Army. These proved so satisfactory that a letter was received from Military Headquarters expressing deep appreciation and hinting that they would be glad to receive 50,000 as soon as possible. Girl Guides spun wool from the sheep’s back and knitted items such as socks and balaclavas. Jarrahdale Guides knitted 50 pairs of socks from wool they had spun themselves. Guides hosted and performed in concerts, held stalls and created displays to raise funds for the war effort. Silver paper was sorted into aluminium foil and tin foil by Girl Guides. Also collected were toothpaste and cold cream tubes and some milk bottle tops. The foils were distinguished by their texture, feel and colour. The different types of paper were graded, soiled paper being second-grade. The foil was used both to manufacture armaments (such as shells and bullets). It was also shredded, with the little flakes dropped from aircraft as they entered enemy airspace which caused radar controlled weapons, such as Germany had, to miss their target, and confused radar operators as to the number of incoming planes. Girl Guide Wartime Work Party which helped equip 5 After Raid Centres for children in town and country areas should there be bombings. Gwen McFarquhar was a warden for this project under the Civil Defence Act. Guides collected warm clothes and knitted rugs for war victims in England and Europe and later Germany. Girl Guide Leaders developed the Girls’ Training Corps, open to girls between 14 and 17 years, providing them with preliminary training to fit them to gain entry into the service auxiliaries such as the V.A.D.s, Red Cross and Emergency Services. Training included indoor and outdoor cooking, handcrafts, vegetable growing, signalling, first aid, childcare and knitting and sewing (for War purposes). Pre-war, new Proficiency badges were introduced to the Girl Guides Syllabus, including Air Mechanic, Cyclist, Photographer, Electrician, Sailor, Telegraphist and Tailor. #wartime #history #girlguides #ANZACDay2021
