20.01.2022 Todays #FridayFirestarter is power duo Melati (18) and Isabel (16) Mijsen, the environmental activist sisters who lead to Balis ban on single-use plastic. In 2013 Melati and Isabel founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags, wanting to protect Balis beautiful beaches. This lead to them giving a TED Talk in London and speaking to the United Nations in New York. . However, Balis governor (Mangku Pastika) still wouldnt allow them a hearing. So, they started petitioning at Balis airport... until they got to 100,000 signatures. Still not allowed a hearing, they decided to go on a hunger strike, inspired by Ghandi. This got the governors attention. They met with Mangku Pastika and got him to sign a memorandum of understanding to help the people of Bali say no to plastic bags by January 2018. . The girls are also behind Balis largest ever beach cleanup which included 12,000 volunteers. The girls now spend their time at school, running their not-for-profit and inspiring people all around the world by speaking at events. These girls are incredibly inspiring and prove that the time is always right to start fighting for what you believe in. See more

11.01.2022 [GUEST POST: Charlotte Zeljko] An edited version of a speech I wrote. We live in a time where being considered beautiful can get you a long way. You get things for free, you get paid more and people treat you with more respect. This is pretty privilege. Pretty privilege kind of works like a club; its exclusive, and there are perks. However, what we see as beautiful is constantly changing. This means a constant and unending race towards true beauty that no one will ever wi...n because the finish line keeps moving. Enter the body positivity movement. The body positivity movement wants everyone to be seen as beautiful and stunning and flawless and perfect. They want everyone to be in the pretty club. The club that says you are attractive and therefore, valued. This is where they failed. The second they started fighting to get into the club, rather than dismantling it, they failed. The second they started fighting to be seen as attractive no matter what, instead of being respected no matter what, they failed Because its still putting emphasise on being seen as attractive above all else. Theyre still telling us what is important: beauty. So, what SHOULD we do? Get rid of the club all together. There would be no need to include everyone into the club if we stopped caring so much about looks and more about who we are as people. We have the power to affect what is seen as important in our world. Instead of telling young girls how beautiful they are, tell them theyre interesting, tell them theyre intelligent and theyre going to change the world. It doesnt matter if all bodies are beautiful, thats not the point of them. We are so much more than our external appearance. We are our thoughts and our feelings and our actions. For so long we have lived in a society that decides how it will treat you the second it lays its eyes on you. We are more than that, we are better than that and we have been put on this earth for greater things than being pretty.

07.01.2022 When one door closes, open a window! Yesterday we held an inspirational Career Information Session with the awesome ladies at @qldfire and were moved by a powerful story Kylie shared with us about her determination to make it into the fire service. . The application process is incredibly thorough (as it should be) and it took her four attempts over 4 years to be accepted. . And each time she got the call to say she hadnt made it she was of course disappointed, but she sear...ched out understanding around why and then prepared herself to try again. . If you want something badly enough its there for you. You just need to keep going. . See more

04.01.2022 [GUEST POST: @char.gracie] . I would like to preface this by saying that I am very lucky with my situation during covid-19 and am aware that many people are having a much harder time, so here I only wish to speak about my personal experiences. . I have always believed that if I thought through a problem enough, I could find the "correct" solution. I have spent a long time obsessing over things I am not equipped or required to worry about, like how to control my path in life (...which makes no sense because I have no idea what I want to do!). Ive obsessed over other peoples opinions and thoughts because I believe that if I find the "perfect" way to speak to them I can change them (this doesnt work). I get extremely upset and angry over things that are happening on the other side of the world (caring about social issues is important but not to the point where it is affecting your mental health). I seem to think that the more I worry and care about something out of my control the more likely it is to be solved. . As you can imagine, this doesnt bode well during a global pandemic. I feel trapped in my helplessness. Theres no getting out, theres no where in the world that hasnt been affected and we dont know when it will be over. This is certainly not the Grade 12 year I had spent years building up in my head. There will be no big 18th birthday party, no dancing at formal, who knows if we will be able to have a proper graduation?! . So, for a while there I shut down and just began wishing time away. Thats not helpful to anyone. Ive had to find little things I can control. I can have breakfast with my friends, I can go to school, I can go on a bike ride. . I think that a lot of the time we build things up in our heads and then we are only disappointed (pandemic or not). Im trying to learn to have less expectations and instead just make the best out of what I have. I think everyone would be much happier if we all started giving it a try. See more

04.01.2022 #Throwback to the Deloitte Head Office All Day Experience. It was an amazing day, for all the girls! . I really liked this excursion as it opened my eyes to how many different jobs there are and how important Deloitte is to the community as it helps solve problems for companies that we might go to.
