02.01.2022 Wow!! What a night. I am honoured to let everyone know that I was finalist in the inaugural HESTA 2021 HESTA Impact Awards for Individual Distinction For the category of Diversity & Inclusion. This is for my work in Mental Health First Aid delivering over 530 courses + cultural awareness workshops + mentoring programs (in schools and workplaces) + for the launch of my YouTube channel. ... Although I didn’t win the big prize I was selected in the inaugural group of 4 finalists. Over 200 nominations or so - 11 nominees in just 3 categories... It is an honour. All my life I have tried to give voices to people that have been denied a voice. Foster kids, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people’s, those that may identify as LGBTIQ+, those with mental health issues & disabilities, people with eating disorders, refugees and asylum seekers, people from non-English speaking backgrounds - I have made safe and secure places for them to share their stories and be heard. I have stood up for them amd beside them. I have help break barriers and stereotypes. I have made change through what I have done. All my working life for the past 30 years - as nurse, youth worker, social worker, career educator, cultural mentor, poet, YouTube blogger, I have lived diversity and inclusion. I have held positions of Indigenous Employment Coordinator, Disability Services Manager, National Aboriginal Mental Health Program Manager, Diversity & Inclusion Consultant, Diversity Projects Manager, Cultural Respite Services Manager and Aboriginal Quitline Specialist. I have broken stereotypes within my family: first one complete Year 12 and the first one to attend an university. I completed nursing as the only male in my group, specialising in maternal health and mental health. I studied gender studies as a major at university. I took on my partners name when at the time it wasn’t so common. It is who I am and what I believe in. I have passed the values on to my children who don’t judge, always listen to others peoples’ stories and never stop fighting for those who don’t have a voice
