25.01.2022 Here’s a sound anyone who’s been barra fishing will love to hear! Herb the barramundi had a near miss during the February floods when his tank cracked, leaving him high and dry before farmer Ron Shaw could rescue him: good news is, he’s recovering well since his ordeal

25.01.2022 Very happy to support the learning of aquaculture in our local High Schools.

24.01.2022 Leading the way in developing the minds of Queensland's future aquaculturists, William Ross State High School has an enthusiastic group of seniors undertaking Aquatics Practices (a mix of about 50 teenagers!). It was my pleasure to once again deliver barra and talk with this year's students, commencing their barramundi grow out project.

22.01.2022 Things are getting a bit hot! Time to cool-off the ponds with a bit of splashing.

19.01.2022 A great day had with the guys from Townsville Barramundi Restocking Group. Releasing another 8,500 barra, 100mm long, into Ross River Dam. The group are building a fabulous future fishing location!

18.01.2022 It's great to be involved with hard working and enthusiastic people. My thanks to president Rhyce Bullimore and the members of Townsville Barramundi Restocking Group for undertaking the great initiative of stocking Ross River Dam with Barra. And a special mention of appreciation to Councillor Mark Molachino his support.

16.01.2022 Jarrah's first barra, measuring in at 840mm! This is what it's all about! Jarrah caught this beauty whilst kayaking, "It towed the kayak around the dam!" Jarrah and his dad picked up some 300mm barra for their farm dam in November 2017.

15.01.2022 A special deal for our Facebook followers. This12,000 litre fibreglass fish tank needs to go, so space can be made for a small cool room. The tank has a flat base; is 4m in dia. and a height of 1m. It has two 80mm dia. outlets (one is blanked off and the other equipped with PVC ball valve and PVC height control plumbing). Mention you saw this advert (I.e. on the Giru Barra & Crayfish Facebook page), and you'll get $300 off. It's yours for $500 (i.e. it will be advertised el...sewhere for $800). Being fibreglass, it can be cut in half for transport, and then re-fibre glassed once it arrives at its new home. Give Ron a ring on 0438220764. See more

14.01.2022 Some of our Barra are helping us to learn what happens to microplastics after they are eaten by fish! AIMS Researcher Dr Amanda Dawson ordered 60 juvenile Barra from Giru Barra & Crays, to take part in her project investigating "Microplastic gut retention in predatory fish". The results of the project will answer whether microplastics move into our favourite fish fillets, and learn more about how plastic pollution will impact our fisheries.

06.01.2022 Our next batch of 7000 barra will be grown for releasing into Machay's Kinchant Dam.

04.01.2022 Ron Shaw is fixing up paddocks and counting losses from last month's floods at his place near Major Creek in the northern Burdekin. "We lost quite a few young c...alves because of the floodwaters, I moved cattle to a paddock that hadn't seen floodwaters before but we still got water up to above the second barb wire," he said. He's applied for some grants to fix up his fencing but says on a plus side the Giru Barramundi and Crayfish aquaculture business could pick up. "Two of our major groups we supply, the restocking groups within our region, and cattle people, their dams are full and with that comes the restocking of barramundi."

04.01.2022 Aquatics Practices students releasing their barra into one of their culture tanks.

03.01.2022 "Howzat!" Released as a 150mm fingerling in October 2019, Darren fished this fella out of his Alligator Creek dam recently measuring 72cm! Now that phenomenal growth in just 7 months!!

03.01.2022 Returning customer Rob dropped in to Giru Barra & Crays this morning to pick up more fish feed and barra for his home aquaponics system. Rob said "we grew out the last lot of barra to 450mm, and combined with plenty of veggies from the system's Grow Bed, provided a really good feed!"

02.01.2022 Mackay's Teemburra Dam barra population jumped another 3200 this weekend. With our nursery temperatures sitting around 30 degrees, it took under 3 months to grow the batch to an average of 175mm.

01.01.2022 Again our trusty ute and trailer made the climb up Eungella Range, towing the 3 tonnes of water required to transport another batch of Barramundi for the Mackay Area Fish Stocking Association.

01.01.2022 Barra soap, something to keep an eye out for when you next travel to far NQ.
