25.01.2022 CFA has received a number of calls from community members regarding bonfires to mark the ‘Spark in the Dark’ event this evening. We appreciate those who are tha...nking our frontline workers, but urge you to keep fire safety front of mind. As today’s conditions are windy in some areas we are urging those who wish to participate to not do so by lighting bonfires or using fire pits. If you are choosing to light a candle, please ensure it is monitored by an adult and extinguished properly. You might like to mark the event by using a torch or outside light. Thank you and stay safe.

19.01.2022 This year the Gisborne Fire Brigade is celebrating its 75th anniversary as a Urban Brigade. On this day in 1945 the Country Fire Authority officially registered the Gisborne Fire Brigade. Please have a read of our history article that we published earlier this year here: https://www.facebook.com/277633070361/posts/10158570406720362/... Sit back, enjoy and you may recognise some faces! A big thank you to Firefighter Di Dale and her husband Matt for putting the video together. Also thank you to Mary Ritchie and Leanne O'Connor for collating historic photos of the brigade.

The 2019-2020 bushfires were the worst in the living memory of the state of New South Wales. The catastrophic conditions impacted life, communiti...es, property and the environment on an unprecedented scale. The dedication, selfless actions and sacrifice with which so many responded will not be forgotten. The following firefighters will be receiving the Citation; Group Officer Ian Hay Lieutenant Bevan Moody Tom Ruff Doug Peart Geoff Phegan Dawn Whittall Jordan Whitefield Steve Bezzina The members will receive the Citation in November, the insignia of the Citation is a rectangular silver framed navy-blue bar featuring a red stripe to signify the bushfire event, and the NSW State Flower (Waratah). Each Firefighter worked in various parts of the state undertaking a wide range of fire suppression and fire prevention activities. GO Ian Hay was the first to be deployed in early November 2019 as a Strike Team Leader, leading a convoy of five trucks they engaged in aggressive asset protection and fire suppression around the Glen Innes area. Tom Ruff and Geoff Phegan were tasked with back burning operations on the Carrai East complex fire just north of Kempsey, they were assigned to the Cootamundra Rural Fire Service (NSW) truck and also assisted with asset protection in the area. Lt Bevan Moody and Jordan Whitefield were deployed just as NSW entered a State Of Emergency, as such they were flown by the Royal Australian Air Force and were based at the Richmond Air Base for five days. They undertook aggressive back burning operations to save the town of St Albans and engaged in asset protection fire suppression around the Colo Heights area. Doug Peart and Steve Bezzina conducted back burning operations around the Braidwood area over period of 3 days. Dawn Whittall provided peer and community support to firefighters and members of impacted communities in various parts of NSW which included Grafton and Port Macquarie. 12.01.2022 Thanks Mt Macedon Brigade - good advice for all in the area

12.01.2022 Several Victorians have already been killed this year by failing trees during severe weather events, and multiple trees have already fallen over roads throughou...t the Macedon Ranges amidst today’s windy conditions. With a severe weather warning in place for strong and gusty damaging northerly winds over the next few days in our area, the risk of falling trees is again elevated and the Victoria State Emergency Service have issued the following advice. Be aware that increased moisture in the soil from recent rain may have compromised tree structures. Trees impacted by recent storm events may have dislodged branches or weakened structures which only elevates the risk Monitor conditions and remain vigilant to the risk on Saturday. If you are outdoors and there are strong winds, avoid walking or sitting underneath trees. Monitor conditions and try to time your exercise or visit to the park outside of the strongest winds. The safest place to be during a storm is indoors Avoid unnecessary travel - don’t be on the road if you don’t have to particularly in leafy areas. If you must be on the roads please drive to the conditions. If you encounter fallen trees or debris over local roads, or require emergency assistance due to storm damage please contact the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening situations, please call Triple Zero (000).

12.01.2022 Thankyou Gisborne SES, for the weather warning.

12.01.2022 PLEASE BURN WITH CAUTION Unfortunately two burn-offs took off today in the Macedon Ranges - while one was luckily extinguished by the property owners in K...yneton before CFA crews arrived, the other in Malmsbury spread quickly and burnt out-of-control until the big red fire trucks rolled in. Don’t get caught out on warm, breezy days and let your bonfire become a bushfire - check the weather, register your burn, monitor conditions and have plenty of water on hand for extinguishment. And of course, if your burn-off does spread out-of-control and you’re unable to extinguish it quickly, call Triple Zero (000) for help from us immediately - we’d much rather tackle a small burn than a big fire. Register your burn www.cfa.vic.gov.au/contact/register-your-burn-off. Make sure you’re burning-off safely www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/burning-off. Check Macedon Ranges Shire Council requirements www.mrsc.vic.gov.au//Fire-Emergencies/Fire-Heat/Burning-Off. : Midland Express

01.01.2022 You may have seen our post earlier in the week of Joel Wood and Jordan Whitefield who are both active firefighters for the Gisborne Fire Brigade and this year are taking part in Movember alongside many other Gisborne brigade members. Here is their full story; Movember is a global fundraiser making a difference in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.... So far the brigade has raised over $560 and has set a goal of reaching $1,411 by the end of Movember, 30 November. Firefighter Joel Wood said the brigade set this goal as it’s the average number of men who lose their life each year to health problems or mental health. This is my second year taking part in Movember, Joel said. There’s a big group of us who take part and this year there’s around eight. Joel has been with CFA for almost 15 years and started as a junior firefighter. Movember is an important reminder for men to not be afraid to talk about their health, especially with their close mates. They’re the ones who are going to look after you the most and push you to get things checked if you’re not feeling one hundred per cent. They’ll hold you accountable because they’re’ the ones who care about you the most. For me, each year it’s sort of been something that we all felt passionate about, Joel added. Last year it hit home because my grandfather was in the later stages of prostate cancer and two days after we finished he passed away. This year probably means a little bit more to me for that reason. For Firefighter Jordan Whitefield this is his first year taking part in Movember. This year is particularly important to focus on your health, Jordan said. With everything that’s going on and the stresses that this year’s brought, it’s definitely more important than ever. Make sure you go get things checked out and don’t wait till it’s too late, make sure you look after your mental health as well. CFA has currently raised over $10,000 for Movember and hopes to beat last year’s grand total of $29,242. You can donate to the Gisborne Fire Brigade and follow their journey on their Movember page. https://movember.com/m/14049033?mc=40 Money raised will go towards funding and delivering mental health services and help meet Movember’s goal of reducing male suicide by 25 per cent by 2030.

01.01.2022 As Victorians start to take advantage of warmer weather and eased restrictions, we must remember to stay vigilant. More than a quarter of bushfires are started ...by escaped private fires, such as burn-offs or campfires Always check restrictions before lighting any type of fire, ensure you have adequate water on hand and make sure your fire is extinguished properly. It’s your responsibility to plan and prepare for fire
