10.01.2022 A must-do in Mudgee is a visit to the Mudgee Museum on Market Street. Formerly the West End Hotel, the building was built as a store in 1856 by John Brooks, who... had bought the land from George Cox’s extensive holdings to the north-west of Mudgee. George McQuiggin bought the building from Brooks and later opened it as the West End Hotel in the mid 1860s. Mudgee’s West End was also the road to the goldfields, and consequently became a busy commercial centre. Numerous shops bakeries, butcher shops and general stores; a soap factory, a foundry, a flour mill, a cordial factory, a coach factory and many blacksmiths and wheelwrights sprung up in the vicinity. Most of the activity was concentrated in Market Street, from the Douro Street intersection to Putta Bucca Road. The West End Hotel operated under various owners until its closure in 1923. After its sale in 1927, the building became a boarding house, reputedly used as lying-in accommodation for expectant women from isolated areas, awaiting the birth of their babies. It became the Colonial Inn Museum in 1966 when it was acquired by the Mudgee Historical Society with help from community fundraising and $5000 from council. The Museum tells the story of Mudgee through its extensive collection of approximately 60,000 items. There are wonderful examples of a typical 1870s bar, parlour, bedroom and kitchen in the former hotel; a slab church; including many items from the old Budgee Budgee Inn, said to have inspired the setting for Henry Lawson’s story of The Loaded Dog. If you would like to join the Museum, their AGM is on Sunday 20th September at 2.00pm at the Museum. #mudgeeregion #mudgeemuseum
