21.01.2022 Some Christmas cheer from the little ones at GKR Karate Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

21.01.2022 Today is #WorldAnimalDay - a day to recognise and improve welfare standards for animals around the globe. The influence of animals in martial arts can be traced back many centuries. Shihan Anthony Ryan’s major passion in Karate has been studying the 5 major animal styles of the Fujian Province (the area that highly influenced the development of karate) and showing how they are still highly relevant to all Karate-ka today. Despite their differences, each animal can be success...ful against another, essentially giving us 5 different ways to attack and defend. In this short video, Shihan Anthony demonstrates 21 different ways to execute a leading hand straight punch based on the 5 animal styles. These five animal styles are dragon, tiger, white crane, serpent, and leopard. Each style is briefly characterised below... Dragon Fighting spirit, wisdom and flexibility Tiger Courage, tenacity and power Crane Balance, elegance and patience Serpent Precision, deception and rhythm Leopard Speed, agility and coordination

19.01.2022 Thanks to Sensei Jess from GKR Karate Region 22 Christchurch, New Zealand for these wise words. Share your Sensei Love in the comments. What does a Sensei do? My Sensei doesn’t just teach me karate.... My Sensei is my role model. Someone who has already walked the path I want to go. My Sensei is my motivator. They inspire me to push to points I never thought I could reach. My Sensei is my coach. They help me through the toughest times in my journey. My Sensei is my drill sergeant. They keep me in line, on task to achieve my goals. My Sensei is my biggest fan. They believe in me when I struggle to believe in myself. My Sensei teaches me integrity, discipline, and the highest standards of personal character. My Sensei teaches me to fail, and they teach me to stand back up again, to never give up. My Sensei teaches me to show respect and courtesy to all who walk this earth. My Sensei teaches me to be calm and in control, responsible always for my behaviour. My Sensei teaches me to be faithful and sincere in all that I do. My Sensei doesn’t just teach me karate. My Sensei prepares me for life.

13.01.2022 Have you registered for our upcoming Zoom seminar with Shihan Gavin Samin? This will be Shihan's first ever public online class, and as you can see in this video, he has a wealth of karate knowledge, accumulated over many years, to share with everyone. Register now at onlinedojo.gkrkarate.com/trilogyuk This video from the 2019 NSW Black Belt Camp shows Shihan Gavin taking the class through a drill where both the attacker and the defender work together on economising their mov...ements to minimise necessary reaction times. Please note that the purpose of this drill is to develop sound hand-habits. It is not suggesting that one should block 10 techniques before attempting to intercept with their own attack. Nor is it suggesting that this is a sound 10-move-attack one should commit to memory. The 10 move (attack or defence) drill is to train students to focus on economy of movement in a close-quarter percussive (striking) situation. Many karate-ka practice kumite like their kihon, where the hands stay well apart and often even bring the returning (Hikite) hand back to the floating ribs. When kumite operators from a distance, this is not too dangerous (although full Hikite should only be used when grabbing an opponent). However in close quarter percussive (striking) combat, fractions of a second matter, and the hands should stay much closer together.

08.01.2022 Dear GKR students and families, 2020 has been an extraordinary year, filled with many unexpected twists and turns. We thank you for your patience as our classes closed and openedand closed again in various parts of the world. Despite the chaos, the events of this year have no doubt made us more resilient and reminded us not to take our good health for granted. Our thoughts are with those who have been adversely affected by the events of this year and we thank everyone who ha...s been working on the frontlines providing health care or other essential services throughout the most difficult times. On behalf of everyone at GKR Karate, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and Happy New Year. Our first day back for classes next year is January the 4th. 07.01.2022 Dear NSW and ACT students and instructors, Whilst the Coronavirus threat level in NSW is gradually declining and class timetables are back to normal, there are still a significant number of restrictions in place with regards to holding large indoor events like tournaments. Given that the State Titles invites students from all over NSW, we felt it inappropriate at this time to be promoting an event that encourages attendance from such a wide variety of places across the state.... With the well-being of our competitors and officials in mind, and given the many extra rules and personnel required to conduct such an event with the current Covid-safety regulations in place, we have decided not to hold the NSW State Titles this year. We apologise to those students who have been looking forward to this competition but we hope you appreciate the reasons behind our decision. Please note that there may be some regions in NSW who conduct their own localised competition days prior to Christmas so keep an eye out for any news of this via your branch instructor. Hopefully we will continue to see Covid conditions improve in the coming weeks/months and we look forward to hosting our next large combined event in NSW in the first few months of 2021. Thank you for your understanding.
