20.01.2022 Older students earning higher dan grades. I want to share my attitude toward older students earning higher dan grades. This certainly needs to apply in GKR but ...I suggest all karate head instructors consider adopting my approach. I recall when I began karate in 1964 there were no kids & from memory only one young woman. The focus was on great fighting (kumite) skill & on finesse, speed & precise technique in basics & kata. That still is nice to see today. Back in those early days in my club anyway, there were very few older people to cater for, maybe a few 40 year olds but that was it. When I began GKR in 1984 the publics appreciation of karate had evolved & there were some older people & lots of kids joining. Right now, 2018 in GKR we have many students in their 70s & some 80s, However back in 1984 it wasnt an issue but after a few years I had 60-70 year olds & a few even older who had achieved shodan & some even Nidan. I had to have a real attitude shift & say what is important here in relation to older students reach 3rd 4th or even 5th dan & possibly above. I recalled in 1986 visiting Hirokazu Kanazawas dojo, in Tokyo, an awesome & humble shotokan karate master. Kanazawa wasnt teaching on this particular session but was watching but as we were warming up before class I was wondering who would teach. I saw this older guy maybe 60-70 years old & his technique looked pretty basic, seemed barely shodan level. Finally when the class started it turned out this guy was the senior instructor & resident head Instructor for that dojo & was 6th or 7th dan. What could account for (in my eyes) his seemingly poor or lets say, basic technical ability. Maybe he had some injuries that affected his posture, stance, whatever. By the way his teaching & correction was great. Who was I to question him as one of Kanazawas top students. The lesson I learned was that I would be cautious in judging anyone, but particularly older students re certain aspects of there technique. The attitude I have is I want to know an older student is doing the best they can with what theyve got. So you older GKR students reading this & senseis qualified to recommend students for higher dan grading the criteria for grading is this: The student has put in the time. They have a good attitude. They are not pushy in their keenness to grade. They are doing the best they can with what theyve got, Eg age affects coordination & balance. Its come to my attention that some no doubt well meaning senseis have said or intimated to an older student, be thankful that youve got to Nidan/sandan, but at your age this might be your peak out grade. I would understand that attitude if the criteria is physical technique but theres more to karatedo than that. I would love to see older students 60s 70s even 80s reaching 6th & above as our longer serving students clock up the years with consistent training in GKR reach higher levels like the younger students in their prime. Why not some earn a Shihan or similar title of recognition. Food for thought guys. I invite your thoughts & opinions. See more
